CHAPTER 51: CH 51: GETTING ATTACKED

"Welcome back, Hero, Ai. I hope the journey you undertook was not too harsh for you. Do you feel sick? If so, then please get treated by our healers."

The old chief welcomed both Cane and Ai inside his tent, and he kicked the other people who sought audience out with a promise to meet them later.

Cane could not help but notice that there were a lot more people here compared to before. Most of them looked like NPCs, but at this rate, it would not be long before trade started to get established and players began to come here for quests as well.

"Chief, there are a lot more people here compared to before. Did something happen?"

Ai asked the question Cane wanted to ask, and he suddenly felt glad that she was by his side.

The chief let out a sigh at Ai’s words before he answered their curiosity.

"Ever since you arrived as a hero to this village, our guardian has been much more willing to contact the outside world and welcome them in. As a result, we have started to accept new trade partners. Some of the people who came today came for that."

The chief told Cane, and Cane instantly felt his instincts snap into place.

He suddenly recalled that this was not a sealed place, so other players could find it as well. The fact that Cane had found it first was only because of the chain quest and the additional quest he had undertaken.

So far, not many people had realized just how beneficial additional quests could be. But his streams had boosted their popularity.

"When are you going to start the trade?"

Cane asked the chief, and the chief let out another sigh.

"That... I do not know yet. But do be careful out in the village for now. Somehow, I do not have a good feeling about these traders."

The chief told Cane, and Cane nodded.

"Oh-! Before we forget, I needed to show you something. Here, do you know what it is?"

Cane asked as he took out the box from the last quest. He showed it to the chief, and the chief reached out to touch the box with trembling hands.

As soon as he did that, his eyes widened and he handed it back to Cane.

"What a sacred item-! It seems that you have managed to find the God’s Incubation Box. It was said that it could hatch even the most stubborn seeds and eggs. But you need holy power to make it work."

Now the next part of the chain quest made sense. They needed to head toward the Holy City.

"I see. It seems like we need to start heading to the Holy City now and meet the High Priest. Ai, what about you? Are you going to come with me?"

Cane asked, half hoping she would say no. If she refused, then he would no longer need to think about his feelings on the topic.

"I... would like to come with you. I do not recall where my home is or how to get there. But I have a feeling that I will know if I come with you."

She told Cane, lying through her teeth. But no one realized she was lying.

"Alright, then we shall leave in a few days. I need to work on myself first. I also need to head to the city for supplies... let’s leave for the city tomorrow."

Cane told Ai, and she nodded. Cane took Ai back to the place where they were staying, but he suddenly felt a sense of crisis and immediately turned around to intercept the attack heading his way.

His knife blocked the arrow, and he pushed Ai behind him to protect her.

"Tsk, I missed. Oi-! Hurry up and get him. Don’t you see his modifier?"

Someone yelled, and Cane quickly shot at the voice. He heard cursing and then someone rushed at him.

Cane managed to dodge out of the way and pull Ai to safety. He quickly noticed that two players were attacking him — a ranged player and a close-combat player.

They were likely not after his or Ai’s belongings, because he could hear them talking about his modifier.

"H-Hey, are you sure we should be doing this? He doesn’t seem that bad. And the NPCs don’t disrespect him—"

"Stop it. No matter how good he seems, he still has that modifier, right? Now hurry up and shoot—"

Ai pulled her staff up, and Cane immediately pushed it down.

"Don’t use your weapon or you will harm the village as well. We are at a disadvantage here. Let’s draw them outside so we can use our full power."

Cane told her, and Ai nodded. This felt like the perfect time to start a surprise stream, so he did.

He grabbed Ai’s hand and pulled her after him as he kept dodging the attacks.

There were many familiar and a few new faces in the chat. But Cane had no time to appreciate them.

"Cane, I see the exit. We are about to reach there."

Ai told him as she saw the light in front of them.

Soon, they crossed the barrier and entered the training ground. Their followers did not know this was a trap and continued to chase them.

"Ai, they will be here soon. Get ready to fire off the blast in 3... 2... 1... and now. Go, blast them to pieces."

Cane yelled and Ai nodded before she gripped her staff tightly.
