Aether Chronicles: Birth Of A Legend
Chapter 295: We'll See About This
Raegar threw more wood into the fire, causing it to roar up, creating a light that illuminated the surrounding area they were in. All he could see was Fusion Soldiers guarding them from monsters. Bodies were beginning tp stack up as Arthur and the Black Knight slaughtered anything that came close.
While sitting there, his stomach rumbled, prompting him to take out some flour so he could cook campfire bread. As he did this, he remembered Drusilla was scouting the forest in her smaller form, flying through the canopy. Dahlia was meditating nearby, gathering Aether like a small storm.
He smiled at this before pulling out some meat and putting it over the fire. The meat began to instantly sizzle, crackling with a sear that gave off a delicios aroma, making his mouth water, the scent of roasting meat floated across the campsite, teasing his nostrils, but he was far from finished.
Raegar sprinkled a blend of spices over it. They melded with the meat's juices, transforming the smell into something almost otherworldly. This only deepened his hunger, stirring a craving in his core. Yet he was patient. Beside the pan, his bread was completed, its crust a perfect golden-brown.
He carefully lifted the loaf and felt the heat seep through the cloth in his hands, he set it aside to cool down. The meat, still hissing softly. It wasn't ready yet; its center needed just a touch more time to reach perfection. He leaned closer, the fire casting shadows across his face, as he waited with anticipation for the dish.
While doing that, nearby twigs getting cracked caught his attention. His head snapped in the sounds direction only to see several yellow eyes watching him from the canopy above. Raegar was curious and flicked his finger, sending a Stormfire Bullet slicing through the air and taking out one of the monsters.
It's body tumbled out of the branches and crashed nearby catching Arthur's attention. The Fusion Knight rushed toward it only to stop when he appeared using Flash Step. That's where he witnessed a horrifying-looking humanoid creature that made him growl. ''Fucking Devils, are they sending monsters into the world?''
Just then, Raegar sensed dozens of monsters converging on Dahlia causing his daggers to appear in his hands and sliced them all apart in a blue blur, the creatures didn't know how they died but when the older woman opened her eyes a shocked expression crossed her face as she stood up.
''Devil Aether?'' she questioned. ''It's radiating from these beasts.''
''The fiends next move it seems,'' Raegar answerd, flicking his blades free of blood. ''I doubt they'll try fight me any more. The leaders will cause chaos across the world, bringing others to their side before coming after me again.''
The brunette looked concerned but he waved it away. ''I'll be fine once I get my own Fusion Army. I need to go convert those Wyverns to my side.''
Dahlia nodded in agreement. ''I'm glad you asked me to come, I love using my magic to fight, makes a change from the mundane life I normally lead,'' she said.
Following that, Drusilla soon appeared. A bright light erupted and lit up the surrounding forest, revealing even more humanoid monsters that the Fusion Soldiers quickly slew without any effort. Their bodies dropped to the ground with a thud, surprising the Dark Fairy whose blue eyes widened.
''What happened here? And why do these creepy things feel so famaliar?'' she asked, a curious expression crossing her face while watching the soldiers drag away the corpses.
''Devils are creating weapons from capture humans to sow chaos across the world,'' the older woman answered.
Raegar cast a glance at the brunette, her shoulders lifting in a casual shrug. A low chuckle rumbled in his chest, he eased himself back onto the log. He reached for the makeshift spit, deftly turning the sizzling meat over the crackling flames. The firelight danced across the campsite, casting flickering shadows.
Drusilla caught sight of the roasting meat, and her eyes sparkled with sudden delight. A mischievous smile curved her lips as she leaned forward, her voice taking on a teasing lilt. ''Well now, handsome, that looks mighty tempting. Mind sparing a piece for me?''
Raegar's eyes met the Fairy's, a spark of mischief dancing in his gaze, mirroring the teasing edge in her voice. ''Well now, I might just be convinced to share,'' he smirked. ''But it'll cost you. This fire's going out, and this cold's got its claws in deep in my body. Mind grabbing some more wood? We'll need a good stack to keep this meal from turning to ash.''
Drusilla's grin stretched wider and unfurled from her perch with a dramatic stretch, fingers flicking a strand of her blonde hair from her cheek with a flourish. ''You drive a hard bargain, but I'm game, my love,'' she shot back.
The Dark Fairy gave him a cheeky wink and turned on her heel, boots crunching softly against the frost-kissed ground as she sauntered toward the treeline. The promise of roasted meat and a warm fire spurred her on, her silhouette weaving through the shadows to gather the kindling that would keep their camp warm.
Drusilla returned minutes later, arms full with a bundle of dry branches, the scent of pine clinging to her cloak. She dropped the load beside the fire with a dramatic huff, brushing her hands together as if to shake off the forest itself. ''There,'' she declared, planting her hands on her hips. ''Enough to keep the cold Fairies away. Now, about that meat.''
Raegar chuckled as he sliced a generous portion with a knife. The meat glistened, its surface crisp from the flames, and the smoky aroma curled upward, mingling with the sharp tang of the cold night air. He handed her a piece skewered on a sharpened stick, his fingers brushing hers briefly in the exchange.
''Earned it fair and square,'' he said, his tone warm but still teased. ''Eat up before it gets cold.''
Drusilla didn't need telling twice. She sank her teeth into the meat, letting out a small hum as the savory juices burst across her tongue. The Dark Fairy settled on the ground, closer to the fire now, its glow painting her face in shades of amber and gold, enhancing her beauty causing his heart to race.
''Not half bad, Rae,'' she mumbled between bites, her words muffled but her grin unmistakable. ''You're handy with a fire. Where did you learn to cook like this?''
Raegar tore into his own portion, chewing thoughtfully as he leaned back against the log, one knee drawn up. ''Old wanderer, huh?'' he said, raising a brow, though the corners of his mouth twitched upward. ''Picked it up here and there. Spend enough nights under the stars, you learn how to make do. Besides, a man's gotta eat something better than rations.''
He took another bite, his gaze drifting to the flames as it crackled and popped, fed by the fresh wood Drusilla had brought. They ate in silence for a moment, the only sounds the soft snap of the fire and the distant hoot of an owl somewhere in the forest. Drusilla licked her fingers clean, not bothering with propriety, and shot him a sidelong glance.
''You know,'' she said, quieter now, almost conspiratorial. ''This beats the stuff back at the capital by a mile. But don't let it go to your head, handsome. I'm still not fetching water tomorrow.''
Raegar snorted, nearly choking on his last bite. ''We'll see about that,'' he said, wiping his hands on his cloak.
He tossed another branch onto the fire, sending a shower of sparks spiraling into the night. ''Keep sweet-talking me, and I might just make you skin the next monster, too.''
Drusilla laughed, echoing faintly against the trees. She leaned back, propping herself on her elbows, her eyes glinting with the same firelight that danced across the camp. ''Keep cooking like this, and I might just let you,'' she teased, before snatching another sliver of meat from the spit and popping it into her mouth with a smirk.
''We'll clear this dungeon quickly,'' Dahlia suddenly said. ''The monsters are Tier Eight and no higher.''
Raegar glanced at the empress, responding. ''Good, I want to get back to the palace to relax and put my feet up.''
Following that, he tore into the campfire bread, offering the two women some. Dahlia looked at it, confused. ''What is this?'' she asked.
''Simple bread with honey,'' he said, smiling. ''It's delicious.''
The brunette took the offering and took a bite only for her eyes to widen as she began eating it like she was starving. Raegar was surprised while Drusilla started giggling at the older woman's reaction. Afterward, the trio finished eating before turning in for the night, they cuddled up to him on both sides, their heads resting on his shoulders.
Minutes later, he fell asleep to the howls of monsters in the distance which lulled him into a deep slumber.
