CHAPTER 54: CHAPTER 54: I KNOW EVERYTHING

Henry Preston let out a cold laugh, "Heh, really? How come I didn’t know you were in such poor health before?"

"Did you ever really get to know me before? Seriously." I suddenly gained some confidence, looking at Henry Preston with disdain.

Sure enough, I smoothly diverted the topic.

I remembered that scoundrel who hit me on the head with a stick and asked, "Did you report the incident to the police?"

"I did, that guy is at the police station," Henry Preston opened a lunch box, revealing a fragrant abalone sauce chicken rice, "Auntie Lawson at home made this."

No wonder it’s a familiar taste. I took the lunch box and started eating.

As I was eating, Henry Preston subtly spoke, "I’ve dismissed Laura Lawson, she’s leaving tomorrow."

The chopsticks in my hand almost fell out of shock, but I rationally refrained from turning my head to avoid worsening my injury, I just widened my eyes and asked, "Why?"

"The person who hit you today is Orson Vaughn, Laura Lawson’s brother-in-law. It’s inappropriate for her to stay in the house," Henry Preston explained calmly.

But my heart was in turmoil. Did Henry Preston know that Laura Lawson is Azure Vaughn’s mother?

Since he investigated that Orson Vaughn guy, he must have also looked into Azure Vaughn’s family situation, it would be easy to find out who Laura Lawson is.

I initially wanted to let Laura Lawson stay a bit longer, but I didn’t expect Henry Preston to take action, so I’ll just let it be.

"Oh, I see." After calming down, I continued to eat.

While eating, I covertly glanced at Henry Preston from the corner of my eye. He knows Laura Lawson is a maid in my house; didn’t he suspect I might actually know Azure Vaughn?

Henry Preston sat nearby, responding to phone messages incessantly. I considered that my mom’s sticky rice chicken should be almost ready too, so I said to him, "Thanks for bringing me food today, but since you’re so busy, you should probably go."

"Alright." Henry Preston stood up and left gracefully.

I pouted, if he’s so eager to leave, why bother bringing food?

Just as Henry Preston stepped out, my mom arrived. Even though I was already half-full, I couldn’t resist the temptation of the sticky rice chicken and ended up eating quite a bit more.

My mom wanted to stay the night with me, but I refused her; after all, it’s just that my head can’t move, not my limbs.

After repeatedly declining, my mom decided to go home to rest, and after the nurse made her rounds and gave me my injection, I was ready to sleep well.

Just as I was about to drift off, my phone rang. Thankfully, it was a private room, otherwise the loud ring might have disturbed others.

"Hello?" I answered lazily, not bothering to check the caller ID, "Who is it?"

"Miss Hathaway, it’s me." Azure Vaughn’s voice came through, gentle and slightly apprehensive, "Are you asleep?"

I immediately perked up, speaking more clearly now, "Azure, I’m still awake, what’s up?"

"Miss Hathaway, I heard my uncle injured you today, and you’re in the hospital, so I’m here on his behalf to apologize to you. I’m really sorry," Azure Vaughn’s tone was earnest, and I could tell the apology was sincere.

I laughed and said, "So that person is your uncle? What a coincidence, I was there for work today and didn’t expect something like this to happen."

Azure replied, "Yes, Miss Hathaway, we really have a connection. I only found out today that my mom also worked in your house as a maid, but... she was let go."

Seems like she knows quite a bit. I felt a bit disappointed; I didn’t hear the words I wanted to.

Since Azure already knows about her uncle injuring me, and knows that her mom was a maid in my house, does she not know that Henry Preston is my husband?

I went with Henry Preston to the company, and Laura Lawson was dismissed by him too.

"It should be my husband who dismissed her. Sorry, after all, he was really mad about what happened today," I said with a slight smile.

After a brief silence, Azure responded awkwardly, "I understand, Miss Hathaway, you should rest well."

"Alright." I hung up the phone.

I didn’t sleep well that night, possibly due to the head injury, endlessly dreaming of fragmented images mostly revolving around past loves and hatreds, making me almost believe my condition worsened the next day when I awoke.

The phone showed it was eight-thirty in the morning. I expected the first person I’d see today would be my mom; unexpectedly, Henry Preston came instead.

He placed a box of steamed dumplings and lean meat congee beside me, following the same routine as yesterday and handed them to me.

I was bewildered, unable to comprehend his actions.

"Henry Preston, what’s going on?" I took the congee and asked confusedly, "Isn’t the company busy? Did you already succeed in wooing the college girl?"

If this continues, the media will soon report Mr. Preston returning to the family life.

Henry Preston shot me a sharp glance. I pretended to ignore it and lowered my head to drink the congee.

"Zoe Hathaway," he pulled a chair over and sat by the bed, calmly asking, "You’ve known her for a while and knew that Laura Lawson was her mother, didn’t you?"

My hand paused in the middle of drinking the congee. Ah, so he finally found out.

If that’s the case, then let’s be honest, whatever my ultimate goal, it’s not to save this marriage.

I wiped my mouth and answered blandly, "Yeah, I’ve known for a while, but I didn’t think it was meaningful to say it out loud. Would knowing make you give up on Azure Vaughn?"

Henry Preston just stared at me without saying anything.

"Do you remember that cafe called ’Serendipity’? She worked part-time there. I met her while having coffee there, honestly, I even met her boyfriend and we had meals together. He treated her well, but now you’ve caused their breakup. As for Laura Lawson, it wasn’t like I specifically sought her out, the agency just happened to recommend her to me, so I hired her. I only learned she was Azure’s mother during casual chats," I continued explaining calmly.

Hearing me mention Azure’s boyfriend, Henry Preston’s expression turned a bit grim.

Rather than being afraid, I boldly questioned him, "Why are you only questioning me? Azure surely knows our relationship too, yet she still met with me, told me about her breakup, but didn’t mention you pursuing her. What do you think she means? Maybe you should ask her too?"

Just as the words left my mouth, Henry Preston curled his lips; it seemed like a smile, yet I sensed a more terrifying anger than when his face darkened. He spoke calmly, "So, you’re saying I, Henry Preston, was played by you two like a fool?"

I knew he was pursuing Azure Vaughn and kept her mother around as a maid while having meals with Azure’s ex-boyfriend. Azure knew he and I were married yet still met with me without telling him.

With Henry Preston’s temperament, he is bound to be furious.
