(Sophia Rivers’s POV)

I froze, my eyes locked on the small photograph lying on the floor. The words “Bloodline Verification Document” on the scattered papers seemed to burn into my vision, making my heart pound painfully against my ribs.

The caregiver beside my bed stepped forward, bending to collect the fallen papers. She paused as she nced at the document, her expression shifting subtly before she extended it toward me.

“Miss Rivers, I think you should look at this,” she said softly.

I recoiled as if she were offering me a venomous snake. “I don’t want to see it! It’s fake, all fake, throw it away!”

The caregiver hesitated, still holding the papers. Something about her uncertainty pushed me over the edge.

“They’re all lying to me!” I screamed, covering my head with my arms. “It must be lies! Take it away!”

My screams echoed through the intensive healing ward, bringing pack nurses and healers running to my bedside. The enforcement officers stationed outside burst through the door, hands instinctively moving to their weapons.

“What’s happening?” one of them demanded.

I couldn’t stop screaming. My lungs burned as I gasped for air, the room spinning around me. A nurse quickly ced an oxygen mask over my face.

“She’s hyperventting,” the nurse exined to the officers. “Respiratory alkalosis.”

“What triggered this?” an officer asked, looking around at the medical staff.

The healers and nurses exchanged uncertain nces until my caregiver stepped forward, handing the document to the officer.

“It seems to be because of this…” she exined quietly.

The enforcement officer took the papers, nced at them, then looked at me with sudden understanding in his eyes.

I had just arrived at the surgical wing when a tall figure blocked my path in the busy corridor. Looking up, I was surprised to see Hugo Ashworth standing before me, dressed in pristine medical attire that emphasized his schrly elegance.

“Professor Ashworth,” I greeted with a polite smile.

He nodded in acknowledgment. “Have you remembered what I asked you to think about?”

Heat rushed to my cheeks. With everything that had happened, his request hadpletely slipped my mind.

“I really haven’t…” I admitted, embarrassed.

Something flickered across Hugo’s face–a sh of loneliness, perhaps–but it vanished so quickly I wondered if I’d imagined it.

“You only have eyes for Marcus,” he observed, his voice neutral but carrying a weight l couldn’t quite identify.

“I truly didn’t remember,” I murmured, feeling increasingly awkward. “Could you give me a

hint?”

Hugo’s lips curved into a sudden smile. “If you can’t remember, then forget it. Even if I really wanted you to think about it, you probably wouldn’t figure it out in a year or two.”

I stood speechless. Without a hint, I might never figure out what he was referring to.

“Come to the Ashworth family estate tomorrow,” he said, changing the subject abruptly. “Why?” I asked, confused by the invitation.

“It’s the elder’s idea. I’m merely conveying the message,” he exined. “The choice toe or not is entirely yours.”

Without waiting for my response, Hugo walked past me and left. I turned to watch his departing figure, wondering what my former professor wanted to discuss by summoning me to the Ashworth family estate.

The next morning, I arrived at the Ashworth estate around ten. Standing before the main gate, I hesitated before pressing the inte button.

“Who is it?” a woman’s voice came through the speaker.

“Elena ckwood. Professor Ashworth invited me,” I replied.

My Rewar

“Oh, Luna ckwood! Pleasee in,” the voice responded immediately, followed by the sound of the gate unlocking.

As I entered the courtyard, a middle–aged servant hurried out to greet me.

“The young master mentioned you would be visiting,” she said with a warm smile. “We expected you earlier.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Isn’t ten in the morning early enough?”

The servant chuckled. “The young master stayed up all night and hasn’t risen yet.”

She led me to the great hall, an impressive space decorated in European style with a duplexyout. Pce–style custom furnishings and artwork adorned the room, clearly representing significant financial investment. No wonder the Ashworth family was considered one of the Southern Territory’s most influential werewolf dynasties.

Hearing footsteps behind me, I assumed Hugo had arrived and began to stand. Instead, I found myself facing an unfamiliar woman around thirty years old.

She stopped in front of me, her expression cold and professional. “I’m the steward for thedy of the house,” she announced without preamble.

I nodded, waiting for her to continue.

“Luna ckwood, thedy wants me to tell you that while you may associate with our young master, please don’t think about using him for anything detrimental to the Ashworth family.”

My eyelids twitched at the usation. It was almost amusing that they thought so highly of my capabilities. If I truly intended to use Hugo, why would I have waited until now?

“Please tell Mrs. Ashworth not to worry,” I replied with a calm smile. “No matter what, I wouldn’t stoop to using the Ashworth family.”

The woman responded with a light isnort/i. “That’s for the best.”

She paused, then delivered her final message with pointed precision: “Also, don’t harbor any improper thoughts. The Ashworth family would never ept a previously mated she–wolf as a mate.”
