    I couldn’t believe it. Truman, one of the most powerful Alphas, was actually treating Hayley- that lowly Omega–like she was precious.

    I was a Beta, higher–ranked than her. Yet he ignored me and cared only about her. He had to be insane.

    Fury burned inside me. I pulled my hand back, fists clenched so tight my nails dug into my skin.

    “That’s fine. Truman gave a short nod, then turned straight to Hayley. “Our friends are waiting over there. Let’s go.”

    Hayley nodded and followed him.

    “No way. Is Mr. White really serious about that Omega? Does being pretty make up for everything? Doesn’t he care that mating with her could weaken him?”

    Then the chatter started again. “Hayley’s only enjoying this now. Once the first round of chess is over, she’ll be thrown out!”

    “Exactly. Monica, you won’t have to see her smug face much longer. The higher she climbs, the harder the fall. Doesn’t that make you feel better?”

    “Exactly! If she gets matched against Monica right away, she’s doomed. Monica trained under Mr. Atkinson, the president of the National Chess Association. Hayley won’t stand a chance.”

    “No doubt. Honestly, the only person here who could challenge Monica in chess is Truman himself. Hayley can’tpare.”

    Their words soothed me.
