“This doesn’t even count as a real match! You spelled out the word stupid with the pieces to humiliate me and mess with my head. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have lost!”
Ha. She actually dared to pull this kind of stunt in front of me.
I clenched my hands, hiding the ws already forming beneath my skin. Curling my lips into a mocking smile, I asked coldly, “So you’re saying you’re going to weasel out of it?”
Monica raised her voice, acting like she was the most righteous person alive. “Who’s weaseling out? If I lost to your skill, I’d admit it. But this? You insulted me mid–game, disrupting my focus. I’ll never acknowledge a match like that!”
The moment she finished, an old man with silver hair, leaning on his aide, parted the crowd and walked forward.
I didn’t even need to turn around. The moment his scent reached me, Hera, my wolf, whispered who it was.
I sat there, calm and unmoving, like a mountain.
Monica spotted him and lit up, immediately leaving the table to greet him. “Master, you came in person!”
Her voice pulled everyone’s attention.
When they recognized him as Baxter, president of the National Chess Association, the crowd’s faces filled with respect and awe.
“Mr. Atkinson!”
He gave a small nod. “I’m old now, walking isn’t easy. I hadn’t nned on getting involved. But I heard someone mention the Aetherfall Gambit just got beaten?”
A man nearby quickly replied, “Yes, sir. Beaten. The one who broke it-”
He turned, ready to introduce me.

But Monica cut him off. “Master, just look for yourself. She spelled out ‘stupid‘ with the pieces to insult me, throwing me off bnce. That’s the only reason I lost!”
“Spelled out stupid?”
Baxter stretched his neck, studied the board for several seconds, then suddenly broke into a delighted grin. “Amazing! To y the game and weave a word puzzle into it at the same time … That’s genius! That’s brilliance!”
Monica’s face fell. “Master, don’t you think this isn’t even real chess? It was just an insult, a cheap shot at her opponent. This is about character!”
He brushed her offpletely, eyes shining as he asked the others around him, “Where is the one who pulled this off? I must meet them myself!”
I rolled my eyes. Figures. A total chess maniac. All he sees is the board.
I’d been sitting right here the whole time, and he hadn’t noticed.
“I’m right here,” I said tly from behind him.
Baxter spun around. His eyes widened with delight the moment he saw me.
Before he could speak, I cut him off. “Old man, Monica’s your student?”
I didn’t even finish before Monica stormed back toward me, livid. “Hayley, do you even know what respect is?
“Calling my master like that? Apologize to him right now, or—”
Thud-
She froze mid–sentence. Baxter had gave in in front of me.
“Master, you-” Monica stood there stunned, trembling as her eyes flicked from him to me.
“You … you’re giving in to Hayley? She’s just a low–rank Omega!”
“Do the same!” Baxter barked at her without even lifting his head.
