Apocalypse: Hero of Potato Fields
Chapter 43: The Second Monitor
CHAPTER 43: CHAPTER 43: THE SECOND MONITOR
Lin Yi slept until the afternoon of the next day.
Recalling last night’s scene, he couldn’t help but shake his head. These crazy employees, it was already midnight, yet they kept making noise.
Sylvie and Orianna, fueled by alcohol, even found guitars in the warehouse and started yelling and shouting.
The sound was like cats in heat!
Lin Yi arrived in front of the sprawled out Da Chuan and Xiaochuan.
Splash!
He directly poured a bucket of cold spring water to wake these two up.
"What’s going on?!" Da Chuan suddenly jumped up, "Uh... Boss?"
Lin Yi kept a straight face: "I’m giving you a task, drag those drunkards out of bed, and in half an hour, I want everyone to gather by the bonfire."
"Boss, if someone won’t wake up, can we wake them up the same way you woke us?" Xiaochuan’s voice was wistful, looking like a drenched chicken.
Lin Yi handed him the bucket: "Of course, this is a right I’ve granted you."
He knew very well that the girls had a serious case of morning grumpiness, and without some special methods, there’s no way they’d obediently get up.
Soon enough, shrieks and curses from the women echoed throughout the shelter.
Half an hour later, everyone had successfully gathered by the bonfire, and Lin Yi was brewing coffee there.
Someone plays the bad guy, and naturally, someone plays the good guy, at least that’s what Lin Yi thought.
He smiled, poured each girl a cup of coffee, and gently said: "Sober up a bit, there’s candy too."
"Boss, you’re the best," Martha said while enjoying herself, batting her eyes at Lin Yi.
Lin Yi smiled and suddenly changed the subject by asking everyone: "You haven’t forgotten we have important things to do today, right?"
"What things?" Sylvie asked blankly.
"The potatoes will be ready in an hour and a half!"
"What!?" exclaimed Melanie, a black girl, so surprised that she dropped her candy.
"But boss..."
"These crops will rot in half a day, so after the coffee, wake up and start harvesting. I’ll give you half a day off, you can plant again tomorrow."
"Really?"
"Of course."
"You’re the best boss ever!" Everyone cheered excitedly and swiftly headed to the fields to start working.
Whenever there’s too much work in the fields, Lin Yi would always personally lend a hand.
The shelter’s temperature was just right, and the girls wore light clothing. When ten beauties were picking potatoes in the field, the scene was breathtakingly beautiful, making it impossible to look away.
Right next to the potato fields were the cornfields.
Those corn cobs were about to be fully ripe too.
The corn ears were pretty big, and each stem had four to six cobs growing on it; Lin Yi thought it must be the effect of the special land.
With everyone’s joint efforts, the work finished quickly. This time, they harvested a full five tons of potatoes, much to Lin Yi’s satisfaction.
Afterwards, he took a shower and rested for a while, then got to his laptop.
"How’s the situation?"
"Everything’s normal, this area is very quiet. I haven’t found anything suspicious," Xiaochuan said, moving his gaze from the screen.
Lin Yi pondered for a moment, then pointed at a lonely, wobbling unfortunate zombie on the street shown on the screen, and looked at Xiaochuan.
"Do you want to go hunting?"
He had promised never to force his employees to fight zombies. But he wouldn’t stop them if they had the desire to hunt zombies.
Xiaochuan, having shown his fighting spirit when he got the archer role, made his thoughts clear to Lin Yi.
"Then... can I use a bow and arrow?" Xiaochuan looked expectantly at his boss.
Lin Yi was a bit speechless, not understanding why he was asking such a silly question.
So he sarcastically said with a straight face: "No, I want you to use a slingshot and shoot potatoes."
However, to kill zombies in the real world, there was another very important problem to solve.
Someone had to keep an eye on the cameras, which was the most important post in the shelter.
Seeing Xiaochuan with a hesitant look, Lin Yi guessed he had someone in mind and prompted him to just say it.
"Melanie!" the young man muttered softly.
Lin Yi sternly stared at Xiaochuan: "Are you sure? I know you fancy her, but you need to understand, if she messes up, it could get us both killed."
Xiaochuan’s face turned ghostly white under Lin Yi’s sharp gaze, but he still gathered courage and explained his reasoning.
It turned out Melanie, the black girl, was a game streamer before, not only noticing many details but also having very agile thinking.
Lin Yi stared at Xiaochuan for a couple more seconds, then nodded and patted his shoulder: "Then go call your Juliet over, Romeo!"
Xiaochuan’s face turned red instantly, like a gust of wind he swiftly ran towards the dormitory.
Ten minutes later.
Melanie saw Lin Yi from afar and shouted: "Boss! Is it true? You plan to let me monitor outside?"
"Only when Xiaochuan and I go out together will you be assigned this position."
"I’m willing, boss!" Melanie said excitedly.
Lin Yi nodded, and with a wave of his hand, a notification appeared in front of the black girl.
[You’ve been assigned a new job—camera surveillance operator]
Melanie looked confused: "Surveillance operator?! What’s that?"
Lin Yi motioned for Xiaochuan to explain to her while he listened on the side.
Xiaochuan explained thoroughly, from turning on the cameras, to coverage, angles, functions, scouting modes, and reporting methods, teaching everything clearly.
Melanie learned quickly too.
Half an hour later.
She sat in front of the desk, hands on the mouse, her eyes turning serious and extremely focused.
As it turned out, Melanie was quite smart, quickly learning the operations, and even able to switch to night vision and thermal imaging modes in a second.
She even added her own little understanding to using the camera to scout the situation.
"I found a hiding spot, boss! Look, over there," Melanie exclaimed excitedly.
Lin Yi looked at the screen, and indeed found a hidden compartment on a wall in the real world, filled with various supplies.
"Well done!" Lin Yi praised, then teleported to the real world.
On the wall of a room once inhabited by these elderly cannibals, he pried open the compartment and joyfully found two handguns and a whole box of 9mm bullets!
Lin Yi beamed with joy, while Xiaochuan started to feel dejected.
Being a seasoned person, Lin Yi naturally understood his feelings, so he patted his head.
He comforted him: "Don’t take it too hard, it’s obvious she likes you too. It’s time to show what you got."
"How should I show it?" Xiaochuan raised his head.
Lin Yi chuckled, handing the level 3 bow and arrows to the young man, encouraging him:
"Go now, kill a few zombies, show her—what you’re made of!"
