CHAPTER 299: CHAPTER 299: THE TESTING BEGINS

"Alright, Ah Xuan and I are going to test that new device brother Leo made. We can understand how far it can communicate. This way, he can adjust the frequency depending on the results we get." Chu Miao said to her family.

"That’s true. We have to be prepared before the other bases complete their construction.

Even though there are some honest people in power who can protect the ordinary citizens, it’s still debatable if they will have the ability to suppress those self-serving capitalists." Grandpa Chu ranted with anger surfacing.

His worry wasn’t misplaced, there were many individuals in positions of power who only care about gaining benefits for themselves.

It was difficult to guarantee that they wouldn’t use their positions and authority to take advantage of the weak and oppress them.

"We’ll go and try to see how far the signal can be transmitted.

I know with this device it won’t be as easy as using a mobile phone across the globe, but shorter distances should be fine." Ye Xuan added while thinking of the people he could give some of the communication devices to.

He was worried about the issue of only a small population having superpowers. This will bring unbalance in the human realm and cause dissatisfaction among the survivors.

No one wants to be inferior to another and many people obsessed with power would probably think of a way to transfer abilities or create new ones.

This will give birth to the idea of conducting experiments and without proper protection, those awakened people without the power to protect themselves would suffer.

There is also a possibility that ordinary people who have not awakened any superpower would also be used for the experiments as guinea pigs.

This practice would probably eliminate the remaining human population faster than the zombies can.

Ye Xuan did not want to witness something like that.

Therefore, he was eager to test the communication device and make sure that it works before distributing them to people he trusted so as to monitor any unusual movements.

"Alright, you guys go and test it. Come back when you are done." Father Chu said and waved his hand as if to wave them away.

Chu Miao and Ye Xuan stood up and left. They went back to the eighth floor where Yang Leo had set camp and informed him about leaving before directly teleporting away.

Their first destination wasn’t far, it was the small street where they had gone to collect supplies twice before.

Since it was a place Yang Leo was quite familiar with, it would give him a clear sense of distance once the other places are reported.

Chu Miao teleported them to the top of the building they had been on before when he confessed to Chu Miao about the mountain bunker.

Even though Yang Leo has not been there, he knew the building because it wasn’t far from the first one they took supplies from.

As they stood on top of the roof, the two young lovers overlooked the expanse of water before them and marveled at how nature could destroy the earth without effort.

The place was now calm with the sun shining on the surface of the water. It would have looked like an endless ocean if not for the water being a brown color and the various ruins of buildings that peeked through the surface.

It was a pity how much of the city and resources had disappeared with one disaster. Many things that could be used must have been eroded by the water.

By the time it dried, they probably would be unusable. It was a complete waste especially since the production of many things had stopped and would never happen again.

Ye Xuan sighed when he thought of this, but he still took out the device and send a message to explain where they were.

He didn’t like to talk much, this for the short distance testing, he chose to send messages first.

Yang Leo, back at home looked at the device that was chiming to indicate a new message and opened it. He saw that Ye Xuan had told him the location they were in and even added the exact building.

Since he had been there twice for supplies together with the others, he knew the building they were talking about.

’Can you make a voice call? I want to determine the level of voice communication clarity at each distance.’ He sent a message back as a reply.

Ye Xuan opened the message after he heard the phone chime again.

Seeing the request to make a voice call, he dialed a button immediately.

The call went through almost immediately. What amazed Chu Miao and Ye Xuan was the fact that this phone didn’t use a network. Calling and sending messages didn’t need a sim card or internet either.

Yang Leo had produced the phones with serial numbers. If you wanted to speak to someone, you had to dial the serial number of their device and it would connect to them.

Thus, Ye Xuan immediately dialed the serial number of the phone in Yang Leo’s hand. The ringing this time was different from the chiming of the message.

Seeing that a call had been made, he pressed the answer button without hesitation and Ye Xuan’s voice came through.

"The third building from the one where we found the mutated maggots." His speech was still concise, but Yang Leo didn’t mind.

He had already gotten used to how Ye Xuan was stingy with his words.

"Alright, I got it. When you reach a new location let me know." He replied happily.

He was happy because now he had verified that the device worked. At least, this short distance communication was possible.

Once they hung up, Mu Nan, who had been beside his mentor the whole time, spoke, "Is that place far?"

"Not that far, it’s the same distance from here to your school." Yang Leo replied to him with an estimation of a distance he could relate with.
