CHAPTER 208: CHAPTER 208: HUMANS’ FICKLE HEARTS

"Mr. Valez, I am sorry. I was forced by Mr. Brown. If I don’t join him, he’s threatening to kill me. Please forgive me!" A familiar person, who was once on Darren’s side, begged him, trudged to his side among the scattered corpses on the floor.

In this fight, there were some people who weren’t instantly charging at Darren and others. Seeing Darren bringing such a powerful group and taking down people easily, they hesitated.

In the end, when they see dozens of corpses lying on the floor, they choose to go to Darren and beg him, looking for a chance to stay alive.

Darren knitted his eyebrows together as they surrounded and begged him.

"That’s right, Mr. Valez. That wicked Henry kidnapped our family members and used them as hostages against us, so we have no choice but to follow his words for the sake of their safety."

"Yes, we really had no choice. Mr. Valez, please forgive us. We will make sure to listen to you in the future!"

Zerra glanced in Henry’s direction with curiosity swirling in her eyes. She wondered what kind of decision he would make.

She had detected the thin, unpleasant energy from them. He must have been aware that, based on these people’s power levels, which had been on par with him at level five, they had absorbed human crystal cores too.

Would he take pity on them and forgive them?

If Zerra was aware of what was happening around Darren, Nyra didn’t fall behind either. She was glancing at him openly, waiting for his decision.

At this very moment, the ability users on the enemy’s side were all dead, except for the ones who had been on Darren’s side.

Seeing the other four people staring at them, the people felt their scalps go numb. It was as if the Grim Reaper himself was keeping watch over them. It pushed them to beg Darren more enthusiastically, clinging to the last chance of survival.

Darren pursed his lips. He glanced at Nyra, who had her hands crossed on her chest; her thoughts remained unknown as she put on an inscrutable face.

What kind of choice did she want him to make?

"If you betray me once, you can do it for the second or third time too." Darren let out a breath, his eyes hardening, and he clenched his jaw. "This time, it was Henry who had been luring all of you. Next, it could have been anyone else."

"I won’t take back people who have betrayed me," He uttered his final decision. His eyes surreptitiously glanced at Nyra, trying to figure out her thoughts.

She wouldn’t think he was too ruthless, right?

However, she nodded at him.

At the same time, Henry’s former subordinates glanced at each other before they reached a silent understanding with each other. They took out their weapons, intending to attack Darren, the person nearest to them.

"Darren!" Nyra’s pupils constricted, and she abruptly dashed towards him.

Someone had stabbed his arm, and he hadn’t evaded in time. He was only one person, so he couldn’t take dozen people alone. He staggered back, hurriedly trying to distance himself from them.

Cursing his carelessness in his mind, he hurriedly fought against them in his injured state. Luckily, Nyra reached him just in time, lessening his burden.

Zerra, Cassias, and Sean also arrived quickly to help.

With their combined effort, soon all the traitors were taken care of.

"Leave one person alive..." Darren told them, coughing slightly.

Zerra nodded, because the last man alive was the one she was fighting against. Others had taken their target’s lives.

After she tied the person, she handed him over to Darren. "Do you want to interrogate him?"

Something flickered in Darren’s eyes. It went as quickly as it had come. He exhaled. His countenance showed the heaviness in his heart. "That’s right. Thank you, Zerra."

That night, they finished yet another goal. Now, they just needed to prepare for the men who had left with Henry or the ones who were outside the base–in case they also returned soon.

Tomorrow was bound to be a massive show.

When Zerra went back, she found Mr. Gideon and Will were waiting for her. Soon, she noticed their troubled looks. "What’s the matter?"

"Mr. Valez is injured?" Will asked, frowning.

"Yeah..." she muttered slowly. "Do you need anything?"

"Our people have arrived. They want to enter the base, but..." Will scratched the back of his head.

With Darren injured, they couldn’t find someone to talk to right now. Zerra hesitated for a bit before she went to find Nyra. After she explained everything to her sister, Nyra went to find Darren and obtained his permission.

She would take charge.

"Where are they? Show me." Nyra lifted her eyebrows at Will, who had excitement all over his face.

"Of course, Miss. Please, follow me," Will muttered.

Zerra handed the matter to her sister and went back to her tent. She was too exhausted. Soon, she almost fell asleep if not for Laziel, who had come to get her for dinner.

In the morning, Mr. Gideon’s entourage left the base.

Since they were heading toward the capital, they might meet again in the future.

Zerra, who had been resisting her sleepiness, fell asleep the moment she arrived at her tent. She needed to recover her energy for the big thing tomorrow.

When the next day came, in another place, commotion ensued the moment Henry returned to the base. He had been feeling content on the way home. With the crystal cores he had gathered, he was sure he could break through the next level and become one of the strongest humans.

However, as soon as he arrived, the smile was wiped off his face.

He saw countless corpses. Inside his subordinates’ room, then the assembly hall...

His face instantly twisted, brimming with rage. He almost destroyed the assembly hall. One last shred of rationality pushed him to check for crystal cores in his men’s brains.

They were gone!

Anger was brimming further in his heart, almost consuming him. He forced himself to be calm and summoned all the remaining high-power level ability users.

After he found out what had happened, he brought his people to meet the cunning Valez bastards! They dared to do things only when he wasn’t home!

Henry’s voice thundered as soon as he arrived at the Valez family’s place. He sneered mockingly. "You all speak about morals all day, refusing to work with me because you are high and mighty. Now, it’s because you just don’t have a chance at all!"
