Chapter 134: Cassius in the White house.
CHAPTER 134: CASSIUS IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
Cassius actually liked the White house much better than the Rainhounds base. For one, it was secure with many soldiers keeping guard. Secondly, it was not overcrowded the way Rainhounds was.
Thirdly it did not stink. The fourth reason was that the meals they served were actually edible and lastly, he was close to the power. He was now close to the new president and he wanted to ascend the ranks quickly.
He had started picturing himself in the position of a vice president as soon as he safely entered the premises without being noticed.
To accomplish his goals, he did not waste time in mingling with other survivors. Cassius had escaped the Rainhounds base with some of his luggage. He had some candy in the suitcase so as he pulled it around, he distributed candy to the children and dropped his name.
"Cassius Quinn, just call me Cassius."
When asked how long he had been at the White house, he claimed that he had been there since the beginning as he was supposed to be meeting President Finch on behalf of the Quinn group on the day the meteors fell.
He was a charmer and since his arrival, he had been charming people. He was well dressed in a dust free jacket, his boots were new and clean. His teeth were too white and his vocabulary refined.
Word of his presence traveled quickly and he was approached by some of the influential people on the base. Eventually, on this evening, word of his presence reached Ceasar’s ears and he self proclaimed president was quite surprised to hear that a Quinn was present on his base.
"Bring him to me." he ordered a soldier.
Cassius was located and escorted to Ceasar’s office, still sipping coffee from a ceramic mug he’d made it into the White house with.
Ceaser’s expression shifted immediately. He knew all the members of the Quinn family by face. This was because he used to memorize the faces of those who came from families whose wealth exceeded billions. With such people, you would do them one favor or catch them in one mistake and you owned them.
This Cassius Quinn was Hades Quinn’s son that was said to be a fool. Looking at him now, Ceasar could not see any race of such said foolishness in the man.
So, he weighed his options and decided not to treat him like a fool. The Quinn family was wealthy, influential and somewhat rooted in power structures. Rich families like the Quinns had the means to survive even through the apocalypse. Many had bunkers and safe houses that were stocked to last them years.
He had no doubt that the Quinn’s had found safety somewhere. To have this Quinn by his side was not a terrible idea. Surely, Hades Quinn would be glad that he protected his son.
"Mr. Quinn," Ceaser smiled like a viper, stepping forward. "How are you here at the state house, I do not remember anyone here bearing that great name here before today."
"That is because I escaped from the rain hounds mountain yesterday, I came here in one of your trucks." Cassius replied candidly.
Confusion clouded Ceaser’s mind. "Rainhounds and not Babel city where your family stands superior?" He asked, he wanted measure Cassius’s usefulness to him.
"I moved to the Rainhounds with my wife Moon Raine. She was a believer in Pastor Salem and I decided to indulge her by following her there." Cassius said through tight lips. He smiled deceptively. "My father was not too pleased with the decision."
Ceaser’s face lit up like a bulb. As expected, this man was not a fool and even his family was aware. If he was married to Moon, maybe he knew the things she did. All the more reason to keep him at the White house. "Of course how could I forget? I read about something about you and your father getting married." He paused. "It seems Moon Raine and her father did not take you along when they escaped."
"All Moon wanted was my money, she never cared for me. I hid my money from her so she figured that I was of no use to her." Cassius answered.
Letting out a short sigh, Ceaser stared at Ceaser. "Women eh!! Very fickle creatures they are. I do not suppose that you know of her prophesies, plans or where she went."
"I heard a few things about the apocalypse actually." Cassius said nothing further.
On hearing his words, Ceaser snapped. "Jade, prepare one of the most comfortable rooms in the bunker for our guest."
"Yes sir." Jade replied swiftly.
Ceaser gestured for Cassius to follow Jade. "I hope that you will have dinner with me and discuss some of these things with me. Go and settle in for now."
The two men went their separate ways, each smiling cunningly for they were about to accomplish their goals.
Ceasar made his way to the conference room where soldiers stood rigid along the walls, eyes fixed on the new comers who were standing next to Lugard and Janet.
When Ceasar entered the room, they seemed to stand even straighter. He took his seat at the head of the table and looked around coldly as if someone in the room was a traitor.
Then, he suddenly warmed up and smiled at the newcomers. "I welcome you all to the White house. I know that you must be tired so lets make the introductions brief so that you settle in quickly. What is the nature of your abilities?"
"Introduce yourselves. One by one." Lugard ordered them.
The woman spoke first, eyes like polished steel. "I am Elina and my skin hardens at will, not even the acid rain can melt it."
Lugard’s eyes narrowed. "Like the watcher birds?" He wondered out loud.
Ceaser’s lips parted in delight. "Why don’t we test that theory." He took out the pistol and shot at the woman without warning. Luckily, the bullet bounced off her leaving nothing like a bruise.
As the woman stared in horror, Ceasar nodded proudly.
"Fantastic." He cheered, placing the pistol back in it’s place.
The man stepped forward next. "I am Jeffers and I absorb toxins, I have walked through the mist, the yellow rain which made others mad and now the acid rain. I have not been affected once."
Ceaser’s smile deepened, finally, someone that could walk into the mist and tell him what was in it. "You entered the mist?" He asked
Nodding, the man shut his eyes painfully. "I saw strange and terrifying things in there." He shuddered.
"There is nothing to fear, you are a superhuman after all." Ceaser rubbed his palms. This man was to re-enter that mist whether he wanted to or not. He would be the one to lead others in.
For a small moment, silence reigned as Ceasar tapped his fingers on the table, deep in thought. Nobody dared to bother him.
After a while, Ceaser rose abruptly. His voice filled the conference room, a sermon, a promise. "You are the future of this nation. Do you see it? The mist and these creatures, they are here to destroy humanity. But with you, with your kind, we will not cower. We will rise. We will strike back. We will build an army that the world has never seen, and when the creatures come out of the mist , they will find not sheep but lions."
The humans stared at the superhumans as though glancing at both salvation and doom.
"But sir, they are only three so far." One of the soldiers said something that mirrored Lugard’s thoughts.
"More will come, have faith." Ceaser answered. He would build his army of superhumans and then, he would reign over the ruins especially after he himself found a way to become a superhuman.
He would be the world president.
Who would stop him?
