Chapter 216: The False God and the True God
CHAPTER 216: CHAPTER 216: THE FALSE GOD AND THE TRUE GOD
Yokosuka Port, Allied Base.
A man in a white lab coat with neatly parted hair stared at the huge screen before him. On it was the image of the terrifying monster rampaging through Tokyo.
His name was Shingo Ueno, chosen by the cabinet of the island nation as the chief director of the "Artificial God Project."
In other words, the birth of the Mist of Evolution was the result of him and his team, their goal being to create an unbeatable "god" in human form.
And in the end, the plan had succeeded.
Seeing the "god" he created show such power, Shingo Ueno’s heart pounded with excitement, his eyes burning with almost insane fervor. "Amazing, this is truly amazing! Our theory and practice worked! Do you see this, do you see it, General Ansel?"
The man he called Ansel was a tall, muscular white man. Blond hair, blue eyes, a sharp nose, dressed in the teal uniform of the U.S. military, with three shining stars on his shoulders.
"Yes, I see it." Ansel slowly nodded, his tone flat. "I see a group of ugly government officials who, for their own greed, used the lives of their citizens for inhuman experiments, and in the end caused this terrible tragedy!"
"General Ansel?" Ueno froze, his face full of shock. That answer was completely outside his expectations.
From start to finish, the U.S. military had been involved in this plan. The initial approval for human experiments was even given by them. How had it suddenly turned into this?
"And the sacrifice of the entire Ninth Fleet—you governments must take most of the blame for that!" Ansel’s words finally made Shingo Ueno realize what was happening.
The Ninth Fleet—once stationed at Tokyo Bay—had been wiped out in one strike by the beam released from the Source. The loss was far too great for Ansel to accept.
To protect his own position, Ansel immediately turned his back on them. He labeled what was clearly a joint U.S.-Japan plan as a disaster caused by Japan alone.
If Ueno guessed right, their conversation was already being reported to the World Council by now.
Shameless! These Americans were absolutely shameless!
Ueno bit his lip, his face flushed red. But he dared not speak the truth in this situation. He could only stay silent.
There was no other choice.
As a senior researcher in the Allied Base, he knew exactly how the U.S. operated. If he stayed quiet, maybe he’d keep his life. But if he spoke out, his whole family might be erased in an instant.
"General, Congress has passed your proposal." At that moment, a staffer rushed into the meeting room.
"Good. Then begin." Ansel’s tense face finally relaxed, and he let out a heavy breath. "I authorize the use of warheads Four and Six."
"You’re going to use nuclear bombs?" Ueno suddenly looked up, disbelief in his voice. "No! You can’t do this!"
"Unfortunately, we can." Ansel turned his gaze on him, his eyes calm. "To protect millions of citizens, we have no choice."
Damn it. Protect citizens? This bastard just didn’t want a god he couldn’t control!
Did these American thieves not understand what the coming of a "god" meant for the world? This was a god! A god he had created with his own hands! And these people wanted to slaughter a god before his very eyes?!
Ueno’s fists clenched tight, rage boiling inside him. He wanted to strike down these blasphemers, but in the end he couldn’t bring himself to act.
Boom—
The silos opened, and two high-yield nuclear missiles soared into the sky on rocket boosters, heading straight for the Source.
Rumble—
The warheads hit their target directly. The explosion shook the heavens, and a terrible mushroom cloud rose up.
But strangely, the two nuclear blasts—strong enough to destroy all of Tokyo—caused no large-scale damage or shockwave. If not for the fire and smoke, one might have thought they were duds.
"What’s going on?" Ansel frowned, his face full of doubt.
As the smoke cleared, he finally saw something unusual. It was a silver shield, half-dome shaped, hanging above the Source.
"What... what is that?" The Allied command center erupted in chaos, every face showing disbelief.
"General, I think there’s someone standing in front of that monster!" A sharp-eyed officer noticed, and the long-range cameras zoomed in on the figure.
At last—
A girl with black hair and black eyes, dressed in combat uniform, appeared on the screen. In her left hand glowed a silver-white light that matched the shining shield above.
"Who is that?"
"That uniform... it looks like the onmyoji unit from the island nation?"
"Bullshit! Those so-called onmyoji are just people with small abilities. How could they possibly block a nuclear bomb?"
The command center was in chaos, but Ueno stared unblinking at the black-haired girl.
"So this is all it amounts to." Possessed by Anzen, Kotonoha let out a sigh, disappointment clear on her face. "I never should have expected more."
Expecting?
Ueno Shingo froze for a moment. What was this girl expecting?
Buzz.
Just as the thought crossed his mind, a faint sound suddenly rang through the air.
The black-haired girl slowly lifted her right arm and stretched out her slim index finger. At her fingertip, a green light flickered.
Whoosh.
That green light shot out like lightning, hitting the Source’s cheek and sinking into its body. As if someone had pressed a pause button, the huge body of the Source suddenly froze stiff.
Crack.
A dark crack spread from its cheek, branching out like a spiderweb toward its limbs and bones.
Crash.
Before everyone’s stunned eyes, the Source’s whole body broke apart into chunks of black flesh that scattered in all directions. Then those pieces seemed to evaporate into the air.
Silence.
The entire command center of the allied base fell into complete silence.
"G–God!" No one knew how long it took before Ueno Shingo finally spoke again, muttering to himself.
And at that moment, a familiar green light appeared before their eyes. With a pop, it burst out like radiation, spreading through the entire base.
