Back to 1984: Let's Work Hard Together to Raise The Kids!
Chapter 116: Abandoned Infant at the Hospital
CHAPTER 116: CHAPTER 116: ABANDONED INFANT AT THE HOSPITAL
The facts are right in front of him, Xu Dahai really had nothing to refute, and with a humble and receptive demeanor, he looked at Lin Yi, "Dad! You’re right, I’m also thinking of going out to work and earn some money. No matter what, we have to pay back the debt quickly, otherwise, I won’t feel at ease. What do you think I should do?"
Lin Yi was quite satisfied with his eldest son-in-law’s discernment, but he was genuinely stumped by the question and pondered, "Let’s wait for Wenjun to come back and ask him, he knows many people."
Both of them waited for Chen Wenjun to return and talk about work. Chen Wenjun didn’t have any good ideas, but it was Huang Yuezhen who spoke first, "If you’re just looking for a job in the city, you could ask Boss Huang."
Everyone turned to look at Huang Yuezhen.
Lin Yi was even more eager as he asked, "Yuezhen, is Boss Huang hiring?"
Huang Yuezhen nodded, "Actually, Boss Huang has always needed staff. When he started, he had some brothers working with him, and quite a few of them have started their own businesses this year.
Boss Huang was upset but understood and didn’t say anything, just started hiring new people again. This time, he tried not to hire acquaintances. There are indeed many applicants, but some don’t last long. Either they can’t handle the work, or they have all sorts of excuses.
After all, they don’t have any ties to Boss Huang, so if they want to leave, there’s no stopping them.
Boss Huang got tough and said he’s looking to hire people on a contract basis for at least six months this time. The salary has increased a bit. It’s fifty-five yuan a month, with no days off. If the weather’s bad and the work can’t happen, the pay’s still the same unless you ask for leave, in which case, there’s nothing to be done."
Upon hearing this, Xu Dahai blurted out, "That’s not much! My two kids made four hundred yuan in less than a month from fishing."
Lin Yi smacked Xu Dahai on the back of the head, "Are you a pig? Fishing depends on the weather. The kids were lucky because it was the season for fat snails, and it only lasts a few months. It was with Wenjun’s help in selling that they made money without taking any cut. If you went fishing yourself and tried to find channels to sell, you might not make anything!"
Huang Yuezhen nodded in agreement, "There are a lot of typhoons in summer in previous years, and there’s been little rain this year, so they can go out every day. But if the weather turns bad, they can’t even leave Nanyu."
Xu Dahai quickly explained, "Father-in-law, Sister-in-law, that’s not what I meant, just giving an example. Honestly, I want to start a small business, pay off this debt first. Once I have no more external debts, I can work peacefully."
Lin Yi and Huang Yuezhen exchanged glances, realizing they really couldn’t help with starting a small business.
After a moment of contemplation, Chen Wenjun thought of Gao Lei, who sourced goods from Guangdong Province. He probably had a lot of merchandise, but it was uncertain if Xu Dahai could handle it.
After thinking about it, he suggested, "How about this, let me contact a brother who deals in wholesale and see if he has any suitable goods for you. If you find something you like, I can lend you some capital to try it out."
"Wenjun, the risk in doing business is no small matter! Dahai already owes you and your wife two thousand yuan. I just bought houses for two daughters, and my savings are gone. If Dahai loses the capital, it would be adding insult to injury!"
Lin Yi’s brows were furrowed so tightly that they could crush a fly.
Lin Qin, who hadn’t spoken up till now, finally said, "If nothing works, just start with some cheap goods, like fashionable clothes, shoes, pants, and so on. Two or three hundred yuan in capital, take them back to your town and sell them. My sister can also help. If they sell well, continue, if not, just work honestly."
"That’s an excellent idea!" Lin Yi stood up excitedly, starting to eloquently describe how backward the town where Xu Family Village was, "I noticed the people there dress quite simply, but there are quite a few young folks who love fashion. Several people dressed up nicely when attending a gathering the other day, probably also checking out potential partners."
Xu Dahai nodded as he listened, and so it was decided to start a small business.
That afternoon, Chen Wenjun went to the city. Even if Gao Lei might not be there, he could only head to the police station to find Shen Wenfeng.
He also brought some seafood.
Shen Wenfeng was surprised by Chen Wenjun’s visit and personally invited him to the lounge for tea, "Why did you come in such hot weather? You even brought seafood?"
Chen Wenjun chuckled, "I’m looking for Gao Lei, worried he might be traveling far, so I came to you first, Brother Shen."
"Feel free to say what you need." Shen Wenfeng smiled warmly at Chen Wenjun, showing a very kind attitude.
Since Gao Lei turned over a new leaf, got a fishing boat from Chen Wenjun, and started a bulk transport business, the atmosphere at his father-in-law’s place has improved a lot. His mother-in-law no longer nags about the younger son’s affairs all the time.
In less than a year, Gao Lei has made a small fortune. He initially invested five thousand out of support, and Gao Lei paid him back ten thousand with interest.
He reinvested, and that ten thousand has now grown to over thirty thousand.
Though he’s not superstitious, Chen Wenjun indeed has been a godsend for Gao Lei, and having benefited himself, he naturally treats Chen Wenjun differently.
Chen Wenjun explained Xu Dahai’s interest in doing business, "My wife’s brother-in-law can’t come up with much capital, he just wants to take some clothing back to sell. Do you think Gao Lei has such goods? If not, I can help him find other ways."
As soon as Shen Wenfeng heard this, he said right away, "Wait a moment, Lei is still in Guangdong, I’ll call him to ask. Even if he doesn’t have it, he can keep an eye out and bring some back if possible."
After all, money is money no matter who spends it, and clothes sell well everywhere. Getting Gao Lei to source some stocks wouldn’t be a loss.
Saying this, Shen Wenfeng went to make a call, and by the time Chen Wenjun finished a cup of tea, he was back.
"Lei said he can source them, bringing in a batch of cost-effective clothes based on your request. He estimates it will be another three days before he returns, then he’ll pass by your place and inform you to get the goods on board."
"That’s really great, thanks, Brother Shen....."
Before Chen Wenjun finished his sentence, a policeman entered from outside and solemnly spoke to Shen Wenfeng, "Chief, a nurse from the city hospital reported a couple abandoned a newborn baby girl and ran away. The child is still at the city hospital."
Shen Wenfeng’s face changed dramatically as he quickly stood up and swore a few words, apologizing to Chen Wenjun, "I have something urgent, I need to go. Feel free to stay a while longer, have some more tea."
Chen Wenjun quickly got up to say goodbye.
As he walked to the door, he saw another policeman approaching Shen Wenfeng with a bag, "These are the belongings the couple left at the hospital. It seems they planned the escape and didn’t dare to take these things with them."
Instinctively, Chen Wenjun glanced at the bag, and after just two steps, he stopped, turned around, and his eyes widened as he stared at a pair of tiny baby shoes inside the bag, his mind almost exploding.
Shen Wenfeng glanced at the items and, seeing Chen Wenjun’s expression, quickly realized the problem due to his years of police experience, "What? Do you know this couple?"
