Beta Complex
Chapter 50: That’s Never Going to Happen
CHAPTER 50: THAT’S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN
Zander’s eyes are glued to Ethan’s back as he walks away from them. As soon as the beta is out of sight, his gaze shifts and he glares at the omega across from him. Chris smirks with his hands linked together beneath his chin. He arches an eyebrow at Zander in a challenge.
"I thought I told you to stay away?" Zander bites the words out. His forefinger taps the surface of the table, the heavy force behind it gives away his anger.
"You mean when you had me kidnapped?" Chris asks, his head tilting as if he’s taking the time to think about it. "And then interrogated me like I was some criminal?" He scoffs and flips his hair over his shoulder. "I only agreed because you were threatening me. Of course I didn’t mean it."
Zander slams his hand on the table and glares at him. When the sudden noise draws the attention of others sitting nearby, he gives them a forced smile and takes a deep breath to settle his nerves. "Crazy how you’re playing a victim when you almost drug raped me." The alpha’s voice is calmer now as he speaks. "In this restaurant’s bathroom, no less."
Chris laughs, the sound high and airy, "Oh you can forget about all that." He waves a hand dismissively, "I’m not after you anymore. You’re," He eyes the alpha up and down with distaste, "Old news."
"What?" Zander scoffs and leans forward, "you’re after Ethan now?" He nods his head in the direction the beta was last seen, "I don’t think your parents will approve of you being with a beta."
Chris snorts. He settles back in the booth and crosses his arms over his chest, strands of blond hair framing his angular face, "And yours will?" He suddenly leans forward and smirks. "Besides," He continues in a whisper, "there’s always a way to turn him into an alpha."
Zander growls from deep within his chest, the sound like and threatening. It sends a cold shiver down the omega’s spine, but he tries not to show it.
"That’s never going to happen." Zander snaps out. His aura flares but disappears just as quickly as it came. A public space is not the place to lose control. Not when he has control over it this time. If he lets Chris get the better of him again, he’ll never forgive himself. "The chances of him ever changing dynamics has long passed."
"Has it though?" Chris furrows his eyebrows and tilts his head. He laughs behind his hand when Zander growls again. "Calm down, you’re starting to sound like a wild animal." He taunts him. Zander clenches his jaw, his nails digging into the heel of his palms when his fingers curl into fists.
Chris sighs, "I wasn’t going to tell you this yet, but I just can’t resist." He pulls out his phone and after searching for something, he flashes the screen at Zander. "Do you remember this?"
The alpha leans forward and reads the words on the screen. His eyes widen and then narrow into slits, "How did you get that?" He moves to grab the device but Chris pulls it out of reach. He presses the power button and shoves it back into his pocket.
"Ah, what was his name again?" Chris frowns and scratches the side of his head in thought, "Oh, right! Peter Young." The omega chuckles, "He came begging on my father’s door step, saying the potential for it was being ignored by his employer." He tuts at Zander in shame, "Which is your father, right? Well, I guess not anymore since we took him and his research on." He shrugs his shoulders half-heartedly.
Zander releases a harsh breath, "You can’t go through with that project, there’s too many risks."
Chris laughs, "The risks are worth it for the chance of hyper active healing cells." He twirls a lock of hair around his finger, "Not only can betas heal themselves quicker thanks to the alpha pheromones, but it gives me the chance to transform him into an alpha." He shimmies in his spot like a child receiving candy.
Zander glares at him. All he can see is shades of red, his anger morphing into a chilling calmness.
Chris leans close, his hair falling like a curtain over his face, and grins, "Don’t you think he’d be a better alpha than a beta?" He whispers like he’s telling him a secret. He shifts his gaze to the left where he can see Ethan hovering awkwardly near the kitchen door. "I think the chances of that happening are good." He nods his head, almost like he’s talking to himself. He looks back at the seething alpha across from him, "He’s not small or dainty like an omega is, so I don’t think he’d change into one. He’s definitely alpha materi-"
Zander slams his hands down and stands up to lean over him, his green eyes flaring with rage. Any sense of consciousness for the others nearby disappears and Chris stiffens beneath him. "You’re going to keep your filthy hands away from him." He bites the words out between clenched teeth. "I won’t let you slip that demented drug into his coffee like you did mine."
"What makes you think I have to trick him into it?" Chris laughs, the sound grating on the Zander’s nerves. He doesn’t seem to be the least bit intimidated. "He just needs to get a severe injury, and then when he signs off on taking the new drug my family is developing, then he’ll just take it willingly. And then, boom!" He claps his hands and giggles, "He’ll turn into an alpha. And then you know what?"
Zander doesn’t say a thing as he glares down at him. The urge to beat him to a pulp pulses beneath his skin. However he did that, then what would Ethan think of him after? He can’t exactly say that Chris is scheming behind his back.
"Then you’ll never be able to have him."
