Chapter 90 - 21: Slaughter
CHAPTER 90: CHAPTER 21: SLAUGHTER
Shawn’s spirituality trembles.
After stepping into the sewer, he feels a strong sense of unease.
The last time he dealt with a psychic warlock, Shawn didn’t directly participate in the battle, so he isn’t sure how powerful a high-tier transcendent of the Mind Path truly is. But he has actually fought against the Lady of the House who turned into a Dark Elf; if not for the ability of Death Retrospect, he and Benjamin’s party might have already met their end at her hands.
"Five people in a team, don’t spread out too much."
To hunt down the Lady of the House who is about to lose control, the Night Watch Headquarters almost deployed everyone. Shawn, Benjamin, Daisy, William, and Gemma formed a small squad and entered the sewers from the west entrance of the Park District.
At each other entrance, there is a high-tier Night Watcher and even a Death Pilgrim; altogether, more than sixty transcendents joined the operation, divided into twelve teams to lock down the entire area’s sewers and search for the Lady of the House’s traces.
"The shadow is whispering... Master..."
Knowledge is a bit restless, spirituality trembling; it’s a very eerie phenomenon, the first time Shawn encounters such activity from Knowledge even without seeing the enemy.
"Be careful."
Benjamin’s expression is solemn. In his hand, he holds a peculiar silver pocket watch, its hands unmoving. He glances at Shawn and says, "Don’t stray from my side."
"Sean, alert at any anomaly immediately."
He knows Shawn can see through invisibility, and currently, the Eye of Truth is with Jason, who went ahead with a team of Death Pilgrims to the deepest part of the sewers. Shawn and the others’ task is to block all exits of this area and alert for support at any time.
Shawn nods slightly, glancing at Gemma beside him.
The two Wizards simultaneously cast spells, entering an invisible state, standing at the edges of the team, just sealing off this area’s exit.
"Ghost of death, emerges from the void, armored shadow, slashes out with lethal frost... "
Knowledge seems to whisper in chant.
This situation is new to Shawn; by contrast, Gemma seems unresponsive, apparently not perceiving Knowledge’s unrest.
The shadow remains silent at this moment.
Shawn doesn’t know what’s happening here, but the entire sewer area seems influenced by some power, even the veil enveloping them to maintain invisibility appears slightly disturbed.
"Has the Lady of the House completely lost control?" Shawn suppresses Knowledge’s restlessness with his will.
In a pitch-black passage.
Transcendents temporarily dispatched from Headquarters are slowly advancing; over a dozen people gather from three passage entrances, and the bright lights illuminate the darkness ahead, showing a group of sewer rats squealing and wandering.
"Be careful."
The speaker is Keville, protected by several transcendents in the middle of the team; to the right, in the shadows, a figure intermittently appears, also a transcendent of the Wandering Path, dismantling a strange device.
"It’s a trap."
The Wanderer’s serious voice rises, "A trigger trap has been set up nearby, be careful, don’t wander around."
Fizz Fizz.
From the darkness comes a rustling sound, suddenly a man’s shout echoes: "There’s an enemy!"
Bang bang bang!
An intense gunfire erupts, the transcendent of the Ranger Path moves first; a storm of dense bullets tears through the darkness, accompanied by splashing blood and pus, revealing a massive spider with a diameter of about a meter. It’s riddled with bullet holes, spreading a puddle of filthy, viscous green blood.
"It’s a mutated creature." The Mystic Scholar reminds, "Monsters have nested here."
The runaway influence slowly alters the nearby environment, causing surrounding animals also to undergo polluted mutations.
Ah!
A piercing scream erupts; in a corner of the passage, a swarm of fist-sized venomous spiders quietly emerges, surrounding a person before he can react, and the swarm of spiders instantly encircles him. The spider bites leave wounds turning bluish-black instantly, and the neurotoxin freezes him, eliciting agonized screams.
"Flamethrower!"
A large number of snakes, insects, and rats burst forth in the darkness, everywhere in dense clusters, as if gathering all the sewer creatures.
In the chaos.
A ghostly and sinister figure draws near in silence.
The Lady of the House lurks in the shadow’s darkness, her eerie blood-red eyes filled with bloodthirsty madness. Her form changes once again; from the original spider shape to something even more monstrous, mysterious gray keratin covers the spider’s segments. On the spider’s head, the flesh has split open, from which rows of sharp teeth grow, practically dividing the spider’s head in half.
She vanishes abruptly on the spot.
In the next moment.
A sinister gleam flashes, and the Lady of the House appears behind a Night Watcher, the Snake-shaped Dagger mercilessly slashes his throat. In the geyser of blood, she effortlessly beheads him, and by the time others react, his teammate’s head flies off. Scalding blood sprays all over the Lady of the House, as she stands in the darkness soaked in blood, seeming to savor this brutal carnage.
"Enemy spotted!"
Several Rangers on the Transcendent Path quickly approached, their figures sprinting through the passage. An experienced Ranger lunged out, firing his gun wildly as he moved at high speed, each bullet seemingly with eyes, all aimed at the vital points of the Lady of the House’s head.
Precision shooting.
Eyes sharper than an eagle, moves more agile than a leopard.
The storm of dense bullets almost locked the Lady of the House out of any escape space, but facing this stormy attack, she merely curled her lips into a cruel smile.
Bang!
The Lady of the House’s figure transformed into a cloud of gray gas in an instant. This diffused mist-like form almost evaded all physical damage, and then, her fully vaporized form re-condensed, morphing into a spider’s grotesque lower body, soaring through the passage.
A strand of nearly invisible silvery-white spider silk sliced through!
The Lady of the House’s figure shuttled through the shadows, spanning nearly twenty meters, completely ignoring any terrain obstacles, almost appearing suddenly from one shadow to another.
Thunk.
Two headless corpses, their necks severed by the resilient spider silk, collapsed, spraying blood across the battlefield. As the two heads hit the ground, the Lady of the House’s figure was again captured by others.
The entire confrontation lasted less than three minutes.
The Night Watchers had already lost three members, but although several shots hit the Lady of the House, the bullets failed to penetrate her body. As she further lost control and mutated, a bizarre gray keratin layer covered most of her body.
Her speed was incredibly fast!
This speed was beyond human capability, her figure like a specter climbing and leaping within the passage, with no dead angle in three hundred sixty degrees. On the sides of her massive spider lower body, three pairs of deep yellow compound eyes locked onto targets, almost instinctively dodging any attack captured by these six eyes.
The bullets were almost too slow to catch this terrifying creature shuttling through the shadows!
"Hold on!"
"Hold it off; reinforcements are on their way!"
A Night Watcher on the Warrior Path hoisted a heavy machine gun, firing wildly. Beside him, two scorching flames surged towards the Lady of the House’s figure. Amid the booming explosions, someone threw a unique alchemical creation, and the rising flames instantly spread in all directions, like exploding incendiary bombs.
In the flames, the Lady of the House leapt, clinging to the passage ceiling as if it were flat ground, spitting out a resilient spider silk. Her figure then swept through the air, vanishing into the shadows upon landing.
When she reappeared, she was already in a Night Watcher’s shadow, mercilessly piercing the target’s heart with two snake-shaped daggers.
——Activated Shadow!
The Lady of the House’s figure leapt up in the flames, her presence ghostly, invisible, yet the shadows of others twisted bizarrely.
A Night Watcher’s shadow directly strangled his throat. In his violent struggle, it seized his handgun and fired several shots into his own heart. Their shadows began to separate from their bodies, transforming into twisted living monsters.
This was a brutal massacre!
In less than five minutes, half of the three teams in this passage had taken casualties. The Transcendents, possessing power far beyond ordinary humans, were slaughtered like mere trifles by the Lady of the House, who killed them like chickens and dogs.
Roar!
Just as the Lady of the House prepared to kill the remaining others, an angry roar suddenly echoed in the dark passage.
This furious howl generated a wave of air, causing everything around to tremble.
Boom!
A thick wall was directly shattered as Jason, resembling a small giant, burst out from the sea of flames. His deathly roar swept across the battlefield, causing dizziness to everyone nearby, some even going completely deaf.
The Lady of the House was more affected, a trickle of fresh blood leaking from her blood-red eyes, seemingly unable to see momentarily. Along with the howling sound of breaking wind, a chain-wrapped heavy axe cut through the darkness and was hurled forth.
This flying axe, containing terrifying power, nearly cleaved the Lady of the House in two, but at the moment of life and death, her body instinctively dodged this fatal attack.
——Nine Deaths and One Life.
An extraordinary ability on the Wandering Path, allowing one to instinctively dodge a fatal injury once.
A flash of cold light appeared.
In the darkness behind the Lady of the House, a bizarre shadow came alive, revealing the outline of a man. He brandished a pitch-black short sword that seemed to absorb light, stabbing instantly into the Lady of the House’s lower back. With gushing blood, the spider’s sharp claws sliced through, forcing back the Wanderer who ambushed her.
"Be careful, she’s completely lost control."
The power of the shadows seemed suppressed by the opponent; the Wanderer who just attacked retreated into the darkness but couldn’t turn invisible. His voice carried a trace of tension: "The shadows now belong to her."
More Night Watchers were hurrying over.
Jason ignored the raging flames, his mountainous figure rushing out from the fire. A flick of his wrist sent the flying axe, seemingly with a mind of its own, back to his palm. The chain engraved with mysterious runes wrapped around his sturdy arms, blending with his body like a pair of bracers.
A strange, silver-white eye was embedded in the center of Jason’s forehead, as if it were naturally there, fused with flesh and blood.
——Eye of Truth [Holy Relic].
