Black Sails
Chapter 45: Dragon's Den and Tiger's Lair
Approaching noon.
After hearing from Marcus in the morning that the secret port hadn't been searched, Zachak immediately took over the task and carried it out with maximum efficiency, proceeding like a raging fire.
Facing these Arlan Military Police officers dressed in ivory-white uniforms, the people at the secret port had no temper to vent and obediently accepted inspection.
In just one morning, they had already searched eleven secret ports, leaving behind a portion of Military Police officers to guard each checkpoint. Even the nobles of Linden City didn't dare show anger, simply waiting for this turmoil to pass in a few days before resuming business.
Along the packed earth road beside the Sea Erosion Cliff, twenty Arlan Military Police officers were searching through the greenwoods. After bribing the informant, all the secret ports along the coast were exposed without any place to hide.
"These people here are really spineless, no wonder they got slaughtered so badly by the Emperor back then. With this kind of character, what war can they fight? Let's finish checking the next port quickly and go back for lunch," one Military Police officer said quite arrogantly.
The work here had proceeded extremely smoothly - even though they were in a foreign country, the treatment was better than back home. No one at the ports dared disobey orders, and he felt quite proud of his Arlan identity.
"Can't say that. Nearly twenty years ago I participated in the campaign here too. The Bema people were quite spirited, and their women were damn hot too, haha," the short-haired Military Police captain, who was getting on in years and had achieved his position through seniority, began boasting again: "Back then we were all scoundrel soldiers, had to make some war profits - otherwise who the hell would become soldiers? In captured territories, we could play with women however we wanted. I had more than twenty myself."
The other dozen-plus Military Police officers were greatly shocked. Were things really that wild back then?
"But military regulations prohibit those behaviors, don't they?" a young Military Police officer asked incredulously.
"Now is now, then was then. Arlan wasn't as rich back then as it is now - even nobles couldn't muster four horses of the same color for travel. It was all fought for by my generation," the Military Police captain bragged.
"Be careful ahead - that's the giant cave the city people mentioned. It's also a secret port," a more cautious middle-aged man among the Military Police reminded.
"The Commander's handwritten order is with the boss. What's there to fear? These places are all controlled by city nobles. If the big shots stay quiet, the small fry don't dare make trouble," the captain said dismissively.
The group walked down the slope, following the vegetation-free packed earth road into the cave within the cliff.
The light began to dim, and from now on it was stone-paved road artificially chiseled and laid.
At the cave entrance were guards - a group of unfriendly-looking people staring at these Military Police officers, from various races, but none speaking, just watching coldly.
"Look how poor this place is - their clothes reek of sea smell," the Military Police captain said as he led his men deeper into the cave.
But the further down they went, the more something felt wrong. Over twenty people along the way stared at them dead silent, the only sound being waves crashing against shore rocks.
Glimmering wave lights reflected on the cave walls, shimmering with killing intent.
They had inspected another secret port before where pirates were also present, carrying weapons, but the atmosphere was completely different from now.
As the Military Police captain approached the pier, he saw that the entire giant cave only had a few semi-derelict empty ships with no one aboard. The only ship with people on deck was just one vessel.
Even a fool would realize something was seriously wrong when a super-sized sea erosion cave that could accommodate twenty to thirty ships only had one ship docked.
"Let's go," the Military Police captain whispered to the others, extremely deftly changing direction immediately, turning back toward the entrance.
But the twenty-plus pirates who had been guarding the entrance now came down from above, blocking the path. Every face showed the cold-blooded indifference of life and death, utterly chilling.
"What are you doing? We're Arlan Military Police, here for inspection by the Commander's order! Clear the path immediately!" The Military Police captain, having experienced major situations before, drew his sword, knowing trouble had come.
The remaining Military Police officers also raised their broadswords, but many who had joined through connections had never handled real incidents. Back home, aside from physical training, they did clerical work. This dispatch mission was for arrests, thought to be easy - just coming here to build their resumes. Having never experienced life-and-death situations, they panicked momentarily, one even accidentally dropping his sword to the ground.
Thud...
A heavy, dull sound as something massive landed heavily on the pier. With each step, the wooden pier emitted faint creaking sounds.
The Military Police officers turned to look.
What Li Site had said before leaving was: kill first, ask questions later.
"Uncle here... really loves killing Arlan people the most."
Wolman raised his two-hundred-pound battle axe with a blade as wide as a door panel, bringing it straight down on a Military Police officer's head. Under tremendous force, it literally split the man in two - the axe blade met no resistance, smoothly cleaving from head to lower body. Chocolate-like, enjoying silky smooth cutting with clean sections, internal contents pouring out in a cascade as two halves violently collapsed to the ground.
"For... formation! The trained... defensive formation!" the young deputy captain among the twenty Military Police officers said with a trembling voice, raising his sword hastily.
But these connection hires had never seen such scenes - their courage completely shattered, they simply stood frozen in place.
Several with better mental fortitude simultaneously swung their swords at Wolman.
Wolman didn't even need armor - his innate advantage of black scales effortlessly blocked these attacks. Nothing happened aside from hearing some clanging sounds.
"Can't even swing a sword properly, yet dare to become soldiers? How do you even manage to get paid?" Ren leaped out and directly gutted a Military Police officer, his claws extremely sharp - any strike to vital areas meant certain death or crippling.
Morrison stood by the ship's rail watching - he wasn't needed at all. For this kind of scene, Wolman alone was more than sufficient. Even a hundred more of these miscellaneous soldiers wouldn't be a match for this monstrously strong lizard. This werewolf always loved joining the excitement and acting crazy when seeing a crushing victory, but would start playing peripherally when facing adversity.
The following scene was too horrifying.
Wolman didn't even use weapons - driven by deep hatred, he extended his huge hands, pressed down on heads, and crushed them like oranges, successively pulverizing several skulls.
The remaining Military Police officers' morale directly dropped to negative levels as they began to rout, but how could the twenty-plus pirates blocking the rear give them any chance? They brought out all their tools and stabbed wildly. The famously formidable Arlan Military Police proved as fragile as paper, completely unable to withstand the assault. It was essentially zero casualties on our side.
The stone-paved road became a pool of blood.
"What happened?" Archer came running over with clattering sounds, having been asleep until Ox woke him.
"Nothing, you should still rest," Ox said. He had woken him as a precaution, but now seeing there were no powerful figures among these people - just a disorderly crowd - he himself found a corner to close his eyes and rest, waiting for Li Site's signal to fight their way straight through to Lavender Town.
On the stone surface of the sloping path.
Just as Wolman was about to kill the last person too.
"Wait..." Fen interrupted him, walking down the gangway to Wolman's side. "This person has excellent mental fortitude - probably the only one who's actually fought in a war. You're this group's leader, right?"
Fen asked thus.
The Military Police captain was quite perceptive, casually dropping his sword and raising his hands in surrender. This port was suspicious - eighty to ninety percent chance these were the people meeting Carolso's group.
"If I tell you everything, can I keep my life?" The Military Police captain proved extremely savvy.
