"I can't make that decision on my own. I'll need to consult the Captain before anything is finalized," Chōjirō Sasakibe said as he slowly sheathed his Zanpakutō, his eyes narrowing in mild surprise at Ichimaru Gin's unexpected proposal. Originally, Sasakibe had been prepared to assist Gin in subduing Zaraki Kenpachi and proceed with Shiraha's formal assessment as planned. But now, with Shiraha himself having agreed to the terms, there was no real point in resistance. The path had shifted.
"Good! I've been waiting long enough! Let's get this started—I can't wait to fight Kuchiki Shiraha!" Zaraki roared with manic delight, his bloodlust already crackling like static through the air.
Sasakibe disappeared in a flicker of Shunpo and returned moments later with Yamamoto's answer. "Kuchiki Shiraha, the Captain-Commander has approved the arrangement. If you earn Captain Zaraki's recognition, not only will you graduate immediately, but you'll enter the Gotei 13 as a seated officer—Third Seat of the Eleventh Division," Sasakibe announced, his voice solemn but tinged with something rare: surprise.
Shiraha was stunned. For Yamamoto Genryūsai to grant direct entry as a high-ranked seated officer to a fresh graduate—it was beyond generous. Typically, even prodigies like Hitsugaya Tōshirō and Ichimaru Gin had begun their careers at the lower rungs of the Gotei hierarchy, despite early graduation. The caveat, of course, was clear: he would first have to survive and earn Zaraki Kenpachi's acknowledgment. No small feat.
"Understood. Thank you, Vice-Captain Sasakibe," Shiraha responded calmly, his voice composed yet brimming with subtle anticipation.
"You can thank me after the fight. For now, focus," Sasakibe replied curtly, gesturing for him to proceed.
"Yachiru, get to safety. Move off to the side," Zaraki ordered without looking. The small, pink-haired child nodded obediently and hopped from his shoulder with a playful roll.
"Xiao Yu, go for it!!" Yachiru cheered as she skipped past Shiraha, grinning wide. He could only offer a faint, helpless smile—he still hadn't gotten used to the affectionate nickname.
Moments later, the practice field stood silent but charged, cleared of all but two: Zaraki Kenpachi and Kuchiki Shiraha. On the high platform, Ichimaru Gin, Sasakibe, and Yachiru observed the scene intently, while the other examiners gave the duo a wide berth.
"Kuchiki Shiraha!" Zaraki bellowed, tossing aside his white captain's haori with a dramatic flourish as it fluttered to the ground like a shed cocoon. "Come on! Show me if you're worthy of being my opponent!" He pointed at his bare chest with his left hand, eyes gleaming. "Right here. Go ahead. Slash me. If you can kill me, that'd be even better."
"Thank you for the opportunity, Captain Zaraki," Shiraha said, smiling as he unsheathed his blade—a seemingly unremarkable stick-like Zanpakutō. Yet the moment the blade left its sheath, a violent burst of deep violet Reiatsu surged from his body.
The atmosphere twisted violently. The surrounding training ground groaned beneath the pressure, tiles cracking, stone walls splintering under the force. Even the high platform where the examiners sat began to split apart, the thick wood of the viewing bench fracturing with a loud snap, cleaving down the center.
The four elders standing behind Ichimaru Gin went pale instantly, their legs unsteady, bodies forced to activate defensive Reiatsu just to remain upright. Their eyes widened in disbelief. This level of pressure—from a student? Their minds reeled.
In contrast, Gin and Sasakibe remained composed. Despite the incredible force emanating from Shiraha, neither appeared distressed, their eyes instead locked on him with analytical focus and restrained interest.
"Yes! That's the kind of power I want!" Zaraki snarled, licking his lips as his expression twisted into a grin of savage hunger. "That's it! That's the good stuff!!"
With a single motion, Shiraha raised his right hand, channeled Armament Haki into his blade, and slashed down hard. From the tip of the sword, a brilliant crescent wave of violet energy exploded forth, racing toward Zaraki like a scythe-shaped storm. The slash expanded rapidly, growing to over ten meters long, humming with dense spiritual force as it cleaved through the arena.
Boom!
The attack shredded everything in its path. The earth beneath split open, creating a deep, bottomless crevice that cut straight toward Kenpachi.
Zaraki didn't dodge. Didn't block. Didn't even flinch.
"Come on!! Let's see if you can really kill me, Kuchiki Shiraha!" he roared, spreading his arms as if inviting death itself.
Shhhhkt!
The violet slash landed squarely, carving from his shoulder down to his abdomen, slicing deep enough to expose bone. Blood burst forth in a hot, red spray, streaming down his torso and splashing against the ground in rhythmic spurts.
But instead of faltering, Zaraki laughed.
"Not bad!! That nearly killed me! That's the kind of power I want!! Let's fight to the death, Shiraha!!"
Anyone else would've collapsed. But Kenpachi, grinning maniacally, stood tall, gripping his chipped Zanpakutō with one hand. A brilliant golden aura erupted from his body as his Reiatsu flared in retaliation, the bleeding wound sealing shut almost instantly.
Shiraha's purple Reiatsu clashed violently with Kenpachi's golden storm, creating a violent maelstrom of spiritual pressure. The shockwaves blasted outward, peeling bark off trees, shattering debris into dust, and churning the air into a visible distortion.
"What kind of monster physique is this…" Shiraha muttered under his breath. His Observation Haki immediately analyzed Kenpachi's condition. The slash he had delivered wasn't weak—while it lacked gravitational enhancement, it had been backed with reinforced Armament Haki. It was a blow that could easily kill an average lieutenant, or severely maim a lesser captain. And yet, Kenpachi treated it like a scratch.
"Here I come, Kuchiki Shiraha!!" Zaraki charged, eyes blazing, Zanpakutō raised high.
Shiraha stood his ground. "Thirtyfold gravity," he whispered.
In an instant, the field buckled. Zaraki's body was abruptly crushed under an invisible weight, his feet sinking into the ground like stone dropped in mud. Every step became a struggle, his bones grinding under the astronomical pressure.
"Hahaha!! So this is your Zanpakutō's ability? I love it!!" Zaraki bellowed, grinning as he pushed forward, bursting golden Reiatsu from his body to resist the crushing force. Each step was a war against nature itself—but that only seemed to excite him more.
All around them, the training field shattered. Buildings crumbled, stone tiles warped and twisted, and the high platform collapsed in a rain of splinters.
CRACK!
The pressure of thirtyfold gravity reduced the once-pristine grounds to a field of destruction. Even the earth itself began to cave in.
Ichimaru Gin and the others leapt free, releasing their own Reiatsu to shield themselves as they descended to more stable ground.
"Kuchiki Shiraha's Zanpakutō… it can manipulate gravitational fields?" Sasakibe exclaimed, breaking out in a thin sweat as he steadied himself beneath the relentless pressure. His voice carried a rare hint of awe.
Though officially only a lieutenant, Sasakibe's true strength far surpassed many captains. Two thousand years ago, he had achieved Bankai—and had once wounded Yamamoto Genryūsai in battle. To this day, the Captain-Commander still bore the scar on his forehead from that encounter.
And even so, under Shiraha's released gravity, Sasakibe struggled. That said more than any title ever could.
