My heart dropped at his words. Before I could even think, before my mind could process the finality of what he had said, the words were out of my mouth in a low growl.

“No.”

The single word hung in the air. Everyone’s eyes snapped to mine, their gazes piercing. Mkai’s gaze was a particrly unyielding thing. “No?” He questioned, the word almost mocking.

“No.” I enunciated again, my voice firm. I was not a child, not an insignificant human to be pushed around. “Who are you to get in between her and me? She’s my girlfriend.” Even if I wasn’t sure about her answer yet.

“And she’s an adult, she doesn’t need your permission to be with me. So what if she’s a vampire?” I answered, my fists clenched at my side. The world could crumble around us, but I would not back down, not from him, not from anyone.

“Haider?” Mom called out, her voice frantic. She moved and grabbed my wrist. “Honey, what are you saying?” Her voice sounded disbelieving, as if she couldn’t wrap her head around the words that wereing out of my mouth.

“You heard me. I love her.” I said to her with a frown, my chest heaving. The confession had spilled from my mouth. It felt both terrifying and liberating, aplete and utter surrender to something I couldn’t control.

Mkai beganughing, the sound a low, grating thing. “How audacious.” He said, his voice mocking. The issue here isn’t whether she’s a vampire. It’s that you are a human!” He said, his voice low and furious. “Not just any human but one with Alpha traits. Do you even understand what imprinting on someone like her means? If she was just a vampire then it wouldn’t have affected her this bad, but she’s also a half wolf. Your imprint is like a curse to her, she can’t drink anyone else’s blood anymore!” He sneered, the words sharp and cutting.

A…half wolf? My eyes widened. That exined her heat. No wonder her traits were iso /iopposite. She was a half vampire, that was her often cold, aloof and expressionless self, and her wolf form was the vulnerable one that I had witnessed. How strong would one have to be to bear both?

“Isn’t that all the more reason she should be with me? I’m willing and want to take responsibility for her.” My voice was a low plea. “Then why do you keep telling me to stay away?” I questioned. It wasn’t a curse, I wouldn’t let my imprint be a curse on her. It was a powerful, beautiful thing. And I was not going to let him take it away from me.

“Because being with her is a lifetimemitment!” My dad was the one who answered, his voice low and furious, making me head snap to him. “You think this is child’s y? You’re only twenty, you have your whole life ahead of you and you want to get stuck forever with someone like her, as her blood bag?” He said, his voice furious.

“I won’t allow it.” My eyes widened with panic. I had never witnessed my parents be so heartless. The thought was sickening. Them being against me on such an important decision.

But I swallowed the building lump in my throat and clenched my fists. “I’m not going to be stuck with her. I’m

going to be with her. Not as her blood bag but as her partner.” I said the words low, and firm.

“And you don’t have the right to stop me either…” I answered, my voice low and defiant. I was not a child. It was a man. And I was going to fight for the woman I loved.

“You” Mkai cut himself off, his face a mask of cold, unyielding fury, when a phone rang and he frowned when his men whispered into his ears as he passed on the phone to him. He looked at me, then turned around to take a call. The distraction was a wee thing, a small, brief pause in the raging storm.

In the meantime, I turned to look at the people I had once regarded as the best parents in the world. It stung to witness them like this now.

“Haider…you’re not naive anymore.” Dad said. “You might be in love right now, but it takes more than love to be in a rtionship with someone, especially something as eternally binding as this!” Dad said, his voice firm. I just stared at him, my face a nk, empty te.

“Your dad is right… you’re in love. I get it, I know we sound horrible right now.” My mom said, “But we want what’s best for you… you told me what happened that day in the alleyway… how could you expect me to ept her being with you when she left you bleeding and wounded like that?” She questioned.

I clenched my fists, my mind going around in circles. Remembering each and every detail Mkai had spoken, and everything I had heard about his daughter in the circles. How he was abroad most of the time and how he acted like he didn’t even have a daughter. Sienna’s mother died during childbirth. If she is a hybrid, then that meant her mother was a wolf. A wolf and a vampire came together to have someone asplicated as her. A psychopath who barely felt emotions, not because she didn’t want to, but because–at least to me–it seemed like no one had taught her to feel properly, or even allowed her too.

I finally answered, my voice low. “That day… was the first andst time she ever did that.” I said. “I know her reason was because she was hungry… she’s not a monster. She’s alone.” I paused, taking a deep breath before adding. “You haven’t met her, not like I have. You don’t know her like I do. She’s just alone, she runs to be caught and hides to be found… She’s perfect for me, I know you’re worried about me just falling out of love one day and regretting my decisions. And you might not believe this but…. I never even remotely felt interested in anyone like the way I felt with her–I–can’t put into words, but I just know that I will NEVER regret being with her. Even if I have to give her my blood every single day for the rest of my life.” I swallowed as I finished, hoping and praying that they understood.

“Well, I honestly think you lot are overreacting.” Grandpa shrugged, his voice low and weary now. “If the kids want to be together, let them.” He said. “Or are you forgetting how mad you two were about each other in your youth, forget giving blood you took bullets and used yourself as a shield for your husband.” He said looking at my mom and my eyes widened.

What? She did… what?

But before I could ask what he meant, Mkai spoke, his voice a low. “Well, it seems it doesn’t matter what

mean?” you want anymore. It was useless of me toe here.” He said and I frowned. “What do you
