Broken Oath: I Left, He Regretted
Chapter 37: Caught Red-Handed by Timothy Xavier
CHAPTER 37: CHAPTER 37: CAUGHT RED-HANDED BY TIMOTHY XAVIER
Fortunately, Hannah Quincy reacted quickly and calmly greeted her colleague, "Mr. Hollis, don’t go back and tell the boss that I’m slacking off during work hours. Don’t get me into trouble!"
"Slacking off?"
This lawyer named Hollis said, "I thought you were out to see a client too."
Hannah calmly explained, "It’s a friend of mine. She injured her foot, and she happened to be passing by our office today, so we arranged to meet. Otherwise, I really wouldn’t have time usually."
Timothy Xavier’s gaze still showed a hint of suspicion, but he seemed to have another matter to attend to, and he told the man beside him, "We have half an hour, we’ll head over now."
This Attorney Hollis was very obedient to Timothy and promptly followed him.
After they left, my heart was still pounding, and a layer of cold sweat covered my palms.
Jenna Sutton asked worriedly, "Do you think Timothy might have noticed something? His gaze earlier scared me to death!"
I took a deep breath and said, "If he finds out, he finds out. There’s only four days left until the cardio-pulmonary support device is launched. What do I have to fear?"
Later, we discussed some specific details about the divorce with Hannah Quincy.
Hannah said urgently, "The most pressing matter right now is to quickly obtain a hair sample from Serena Sawyer and do another DNA test."
Jenna Sutton suddenly remembered something and said, "Why do you think Timothy is also looking for a lawyer? Could it be that, like us, he’s quietly working on a divorce? He’s so cunning, could he be colluding with the lawyer to plan for Zoe to walk away with nothing?"
Hannah said, "That’s easy. When I return to the law firm, I can find out what Attorney Hollis has been working on for President Xavier recently. I’ll let you know if I hear anything."
We thanked Hannah and returned to The Xavier Manor.
At that time, Timothy hadn’t returned yet, and neither Doris nor Serena was home.
We were thinking about how to obtain Serena’s hair.
Among all the servants in the villa, I only trusted Nanny Lowell.
But Nanny Lowell is paid by Timothy, she may not dare to do this for me.
Jenna Sutton said, "Forget it, what if Nanny Lowell has already been bribed by Serena and sells you out! Here’s a thought, I’ll help you look for it while they’re not home."
Even though I was worried, this was the fastest way right now.
So, Jenna Sutton and I cooperated.
I first pretended that my wedding ring fell in the courtyard, getting Nanny Lowell to take all the servants to look for it.
At this moment, Jenna Sutton went to the master bedroom upstairs.
A few minutes later, she came back.
Unexpectedly, she had actually found Serena’s hair.
"This blonde strand, it should be hers, right?"
Jenna Sutton held the hair like it was a rare treasure.
I nodded and said, "Yes, that’s the color of her hair."
Jenna Sutton carefully wrapped the hair in a tissue and said, "Alright! Wait for my good news! We won’t screw it up this time!"
She hurried off with the hair, preparing to do another DNA test at the lab.
Meanwhile, I also received a call from Hannah.
She said, "Don’t worry, Miss Ellison, your husband met with Attorney Hollis not to discuss divorce, but because of that suicide case on the Xavier Group construction site. The family is suing Xavier Group, and he’s handling it."
"Okay, I understand. Thank you, Attorney Quincy."
It seems Timothy hasn’t planned on a divorce yet since someone like him would have plotted it a long time ago.
I thought I only needed to wait for the DNA test results now.
But that evening, after Serena returned, she said Timothy’s birthday gift for her was missing!
In the middle of the night, Timothy gathered all the servants and asked who went to the master bedroom.
The servants responsible for cleaning the master bedroom denied it, all saying they hadn’t touched Serena’s things.
When Timothy called me out, Serena firmly said, "It’s impossible! I put that necklace on the bedside table; how could it suddenly disappear?"
I felt she was targeting me and said, "This morning, you were wearing that necklace around your neck, completely loving it. Why did you suddenly take it off and place it on the bedside table?"
Serena paused slightly, then said without changing her expression, "It’s a precious necklace, a gift from Timothy. I was afraid of damaging it, so I left it at home. I didn’t expect it to disappear when I returned."
At that moment, the maid responsible for cleaning suddenly said, "I remember, today, madam brought an outsider in. Could it have been that person?"
"Nonsense!"
I sternly stopped her.
But that maid was opportunistic and seemed to understand the situation of this family. She felt I had no standing with Timothy.
To clear her own suspicion, she chose to throw mud on me.
Timothy’s suspicious gaze fell on me and asked, "Did Jenna Sutton come today?"
"Yes, she came."
I couldn’t help but feel flustered.
If things continued like this, once he checks the surveillance footage, he’ll find out Jenna went to the master bedroom.
I knew the necklace wasn’t taken by Jenna; it was likely Serena setting a trap.
But if Jenna was discovered in the master bedroom, how would we explain it?
Should I admit she went to the master bedroom to get Serena’s hair for a DNA test with Doris?
To prevent Timothy from continuing to investigate, I had no choice but to say, "Alright, I’ll be honest, I took the necklace, so what?"
Timothy’s eyes filled with surprise, his brow furrowed as he asked, "Why?"
"Because I’m jealous of Serena."
This was the only excuse I could think of currently that fit the behavior.
I said, "That necklace was the one you gave me when you proposed. Now, you’ve re-gifted it to her. I was just taking back what’s mine. Is that stealing?"
Sure enough, once I said that, Timothy’s gaze seemed less sharp, and even his expression softened.
After a moment of silence, he told Serena, "I’ll buy you another necklace later. Just let this one go."
Serena smiled reluctantly but had to agree.
I internally sighed in relief.
Fortunately, he believed me and didn’t pursue the matter further.
I acted calm and said, "If there’s nothing else, I’ll go back to my room; I’m tired."
Timothy didn’t stop me, even letting Nanny Lowell escort me back.
I thought the matter was settled.
But I didn’t expect that an hour later, when I finished handling some work on my computer and was about to sleep, Timothy directly pushed the door open and entered.
His expression was grim as he walked up to me and grabbed my wheelchair.
Then, he placed his hands on either side of my wheelchair, his cold face gradually approaching me.
My heart trembled, trying to suppress my nervousness as I calmly asked, "Timothy, what are you doing?"
"I’m checking to see how many more lies will come from that mouth of yours."
His hand, wearing the Buddha Beads, gently lifted to rub my lips with his thumb, sending a shiver through me.
I heard his voice coldly say, "I had the surveillance footage checked earlier, and the person who went to the master bedroom today wasn’t you, it was Jenna Sutton."
My heart sank to the bottom.
I didn’t expect that he would check the surveillance and find Jenna.
I could only brace myself and say, "The Sutton Family in Veridia is wealthy, even if not on par with The Xavier Family. Jenna Sutton has plenty of jewelry; there’s no need to take a necklace."
Timothy sneered and nodded, saying, "I also think she doesn’t need a necklace. So tell me, what did she do in the master bedroom? Or, what did she take?"
I was utterly flustered; I couldn’t let Timothy find out I was using his and Serena’s samples for a DNA test.
Otherwise, not only would he destroy the evidence, but he might even act against my mother.
If that happened, divorcing would become even more difficult.
I scrambled to explain, "I asked her to go up, to help me...help me retrieve the necklace. That necklace was mine, wasn’t it?"
"Hmm, okay. That explanation is convincing."
Timothy seemed amused, treating me like a startled pet, and asked, "If that’s the case, where’s the necklace? Didn’t she bring it back for you?"
