CHAPTER 210: CHAPTER 209. WHO NEEDS ENEMY?

[Watch your mouth, woman] the CEO’s voice this time was in a completely different tone: heavier, harsher, and as if he could kill the other person anytime. [We’re only experiencing a little setback]

"I presumed this happened during the land dispute case," the prosecutor explained.

[Who cares?! I don’t know what will happen to you in the future, so just give me a killing dose!]

[Fuck, I told you people to be patient!] the CEO snapped for a second before calming down. [Fine, but do it when you can avoid suspicion at least. I don’t want to get dragged when the police catch your ass]

[You--]

[Shut up! I’m helping you because you used to be my brother’s woman, you bitch!] the CEO cursed. [If you’re a bit smart, you should only use it when there are a lot of people in your house. At least you can point a finger at someone else]

The prosecutor stopped the recording then, which made the room fall into an even eerier silence.

"As you have heard, they are planning to use a killing dosage when there are a lot of people around," the prosecutor grimaced.

"Meaning today..." the chief secretary gasped.

The prosecutor nodded. "I thought it would be better for me to let you hear it yourself than to tell you through the phone. I reckoned you won’t believe me otherwise."

Contrary to the prosecutor’s thought, everyone in this room would probably believe it right away.

"That bitch?!" Amber cursed. Even in her most wicked era, she would never have thought of poisoning someone.

Hell--she would never have thought about killing someone.

Meanwhile, Sarah was looking at her phone, frowning as she read a text from Mari. "J, don’t let Vivian return to the annex. Tell her assistant to keep her in the mansion--just to be safe, don’t give anything to her anything that has been opened."

Hajin looked at Sarah; although he should already know what Sarah was asking him, his eyes told her that he didn’t want to leave her.

"I’ll be fine," Sarah said, holding his hand. "Please?"

Hajin narrowed his eyes, but finally walked out of the office. The urgency in Sarah’s voice snapped the others back into the wickedness of the situation at hand. If the third wife was willing to poison his husband, she would have no qualm about poisoning the mistress.

Something that Vivian had actually been scared of all this time.

The Chief Secretary immediately turned toward the chairman. "Mr. Chairman, I think we need to check your condition in the hospital."

"Later," the chairman raised his hand and kept his eyes on the prosecutor. "So, are you here to arrest them?"

"If I’m here for that, I would have barged in with a warrant, Chairman Lee," the prosecutor said with a little smile, taking out the folder with the deals report inside and the recorder. "First and foremost, we just want to prevent a murder."

The chairman stared at the evidence on the table and stood up. "So, you’re saying that it’s up to me, right?"

The prosecutor shrugged and stood up too. "We’ve been busy enough as it is, after all."

"Very well," the chairman nodded. "Thank you for your...gallantry. I’ll be sure to contact you if anything happens."

The prosecutor nodded, knowing enough that he couldn’t stay longer. "Well, then."

The chairman shifted his gaze toward the security chief right away while the chief secretary collected the folder and recorder. "Chief Kim, where’s Mina at right now?"

"I shall look for--"

"Oh, now that I recall...I saw that woman and Uncle Hyun coming out of the back door earlier," Sarah told them.

"When?"

"Before I saw you in the solarium, Chairman," she replied, just as her phone vibrated. She glanced at it and raised her brows. "Oh--Vivian said she saw them going to the annex."

"What?!"

Sarah raised her phone and showed them her screen. "Through the solarium window."

"They are really trying to put poisons in a pregnant woman’s food?!" the chairman gritted his teeth and glared at the chief security. "What are you doing? Quickly--cough!"

"Mr. Chairman!"

"Father!"

The chief secretary and Amber immediately rushed toward the coughing chairman, who wobbled and had to grip the backrest of the couch to stabilize himself. It didn’t seem like they had managed to place the killing dosage, but it was clear that poison had affected the aging man.

"Chief Kim, I think it’ll be best to hold them in the annex to avoid commotion," Sarah told the chief secretary before he disappeared behind the door.

"Understood, Miss!"

"I’ll see you out, Prosecutor Jang," Sarah tapped the prosecutor’s back, who was looking unsure about what he should do. On the way out, she looked at Amber and gestured toward the chairman, telling her to use the chance to cozy up and look useful.

As quietly as possible, Sarah led the prosecutor through the hallways and rooms she knew wouldn’t be crowded by guests. Not because she didn’t want to pull any attention, however.

"How do you come here, Prosecutor Jang?" Sarah asked as they crossed the empty lounge to reach the side door only used by the house staff. "Car? Taxi?"

"My car is parked outside since I didn’t plan on staying long," the prosecutor replied. "You don’t have to escort me, Young Miss."

Sarah smiled as she stopped at the door, looking at the empty stone promenade. "May I ask something, Prosecutor Jang?"

The prosecutor also stopped, looking at Sarah curiously. "Of course."

"Is this your own decision? Coming here, I mean."

"...Pardon?"

Sarah turned to face the prosecutor and smiled, tilting her head. "Have you asked the manager?"

Jang Haneul looked at the deep, seemingly bottomless black eyes, detached from the sweet smile below. He didn’t need to be a genius to figure out the ’manager’ she was talking about, or even...

Why she knew about it.

"Just a little advice, Mr. Prosecutor," the pair of abyss curled as the soft voice went deeper. "When you’re in something with someone, better to let that person know first before making a decision."

That confirmed it, then. He had a hunch that this girl was different when she barely looked shaken inside the room. Surprised, perhaps, but not as shocked as the others, as if she already expected it. The way she stayed calm and gave others actual orders made Haneul think she was the one holding the authority in this house.

Perhaps she was, even though no one seemed to realize it. Not even the actual homeowner.

Jang Haneul could feel his palm sweat, even though the petite young woman looked totally harmless. Still, he gripped his briefcase tightly and put on a brave front. "This is about someone’s life, Miss."

"Oh, I’m very thankful for your heroism--and tact, at least," Sarah smiled; a sweet, sweet one. "But--oh, well...what does it matter now?" she shrugged, stepping back lightly. "I just hope it’s the last time you have your eyes on this direction. You’re already busy anyway."

She laughed softly, melodically, and the mood shifted instantly like someone was swapping a filter on the background. Far from soothing, it made the prosecutor’s back feel cold.

Still with the lovely smile, Sarah patted the prosecutor’s back, sending him to the stonewalk while stepping back inside the house. "Have a safe trip, Prosecutor Jang! Please be careful on your way up."

Jang Haneul blinked; as if in instinct, he bowed slightly and walked away in a daze, stroking his cold nape. Sarah watched the man until his back disappeared behind a turn, before finally letting out a relieved breath.

"Phew..."

"Why did you do that?" Hajin asked quietly, almost making Sarah flinch from how discreet his movement was. "There’s no need for him to know anything."

When did this guy even arrive to hear the conversation? But then again, his only job was to tell Honey to protect Vivian and make her look at the annex from the solarium.

"Sooner or later, he’ll find a trace of Joseph," Sarah clicked her tongue. "If they traced the company shares he had, it might be trouble for us."

For Austin, to be precise, because the shares had been processed to be owned by the consultation company, which was legally under NMS Investment. Once it was found, Joseph’s disappearance might get re-investigated, and her whole plan might get shaken. Sarah had to make sure that even if he or his team found the trace, they wouldn’t think about pursuing it.

Not to mention...

"If he told Sol first, we could do some prevention whilst using it to get Lee Hyun’s shares," she grumbled. "We can’t do it anymore now."

Hajin raised his brows in surprise. Even Sarah stiffened in surprise. "...you sound very cold just now," he said.

"Have I gone too far?" Sarah grimaced.

"Not yet," Hajin chuckled, stroking the back of his princess’s hair.

She still thought about preventing it from happening rather than just letting the chairman get poisoned after all. Besides, her first instinct was to protect the pregnant woman.

"Oh, whatever," Sarah sighed and stepped into the promenade, taking a different direction from the prosecutor. "Let’s just check our old place."
