Chef at the University Canteen
Chapter 53: What Are They Eating?
CHAPTER 53: CHAPTER 53: WHAT ARE THEY EATING?
The night gradually deepens, and the streetlights on the campus road light up one by one, illuminating the entire school.
In each dormitory building, the lights in the windows also come on, and now and then, there are faint sounds of singing and laughter.
The second cafeteria, which had been bustling all day, gradually quiets down, with most of the stalls starting to clean up and prepare to close for the day.
The "Jiang Family Dumplings" shop, however, has not yet closed, with people still lining up outside the window to buy food.
However, Jiang Yu and Lu Shuwu have already taken a break, as the dumplings made earlier are enough to sell.
The weather is still too hot, really not suitable for making dumplings the night before. Even if kept in the freezer without spoiling, the taste of steamed frozen dumplings is definitely much worse than freshly made ones.
So, Jiang Yu would rather get up a bit earlier the next day to let students enjoy freshly steamed dumplings, even if it means more work for him, he’s willing.
Jiang Yu took a break for a while, saw that the dumplings were almost sold out, turned his head to look at Lu Shuwu, and casually asked:
"What shall we eat later? Still dumplings and mouth-watering chicken?"
"What else? Are you planning to cook new dishes?"
"No new dishes."
"Then that’s settled."
Lu Shuwu wasn’t disappointed, he took a sip of water, smacked his lips, and said,
"We’ve only had mouth-watering chicken a few times, I’m not tired of it at all."
Jiang Yu glanced at him disdainfully: "You’ve had so many dumplings and hot and sour soup, aren’t you tired of them either?"
"Such delicious things, isn’t it normal not to get tired of them?"
Lu Shuwu didn’t feel embarrassed at all, he smiled and said,
"Of course, if the boss makes more new dishes in the future, even if I’m not tired of them, I wouldn’t be able to eat that much, I’ll just choose the tastier ones."
Jiang Yu: "..."
The two were chatting noncommittally when Yan Tongtong, busy in the front, suddenly turned back and shouted:
"Boss, there’s someone outside looking for you!"
"Coming!"
Jiang Yu was momentarily stunned, who would come looking for him at this hour?
But he quickly snapped back to reality, stood up from his seat, and walked briskly outside.
There weren’t many students left in line outside, Yan Tongtong and Li Yue along with the others were busy wrapping up, though their faces still showed some fatigue, their moods seemed quite good.
At the counter, Jiang Yu glanced at the lobby outside the window and immediately noticed a middle-aged man in his forties or fifties, pacing with his hands behind his back, slightly looking up and glancing around thoughtfully.
This, isn’t it Teacher Xiong from the Student Affairs Office?
Why would he be here at this time?
Not having much time to think, Jiang Yu hurriedly opened the door and went out, greeting him with a smile as he approached:
"Teacher Xiong, what brings you here?"
"Oh, I just came back from a walk outside and remembered your shop is here, so I thought I’d stop by and have a look."
Teacher Xiong turned around when he heard the voice, seeing Jiang Yu covered in flour, couldn’t help but chuckle,
"It seems the boss has multiple roles, even acting as a chef personally."
"Haha, it’s a small shop, we can’t afford a skilled chef, so I have to do it myself."
Jiang Yu brushed the flour off himself and gestured invitingly,
"Teacher Xiong, since you’re already here, why not come in for a sit and have some water?"
"Sure."
Teacher Xiong thought for a moment and agreed readily.
He began walking in, saying,
"Didn’t I promise you this morning to help find a bigger stall for you? I thought I should come over one day to see your current shop’s situation and size.
If I don’t even know the basic situation, and find you a stall smaller than yours now, that would mean good intentions gone awry!"
Chatting all the while, the two walked into the shop one after the other.
"Teacher Xiong, please sit down, I’ll get you a glass of water!"
Entering the shop, Jiang Yu led Teacher Xiong to sit near the kitchen and then took out a clean cup, making him a cup of tea.
"Xiaojiang, your shop is indeed a bit small."
After Jiang Yu brewed the tea and brought it over, Teacher Xiong glanced around, shook his head, and said,
"This shop is suitable for selling dumplings or juice, but if you want to do something else while selling dumplings, it’s clearly not enough."
"Yes, that’s basically the situation now."
Jiang Yu nodded and continued, "If the shop were a bit bigger..."
He hadn’t finished speaking when a loud shout came from outside:
"Lao Jiang! It’s so late, come out and eat! Are you made of iron, not hungry yet?"
The words had just fallen when Hu Zhihai barged in from the front, spotting Teacher Xiong sitting inside. Stunned, he instinctively raised a hand to scratch his head, apologetically saying,
"Sorry, I didn’t notice there were guests here...
Keep chatting! I’ll head out first!"
Saying this, he quickly turned around, somewhat awkwardly leaving.
"It’s past 9 PM, and you haven’t had dinner yet?"
After Hu Zhihai left, Teacher Xiong looked at Jiang Yu in surprise, raising his hand to urge,
"Go eat quickly, don’t mind me, I just came to have a look, nothing else, I’ll leave after sitting for a while."
"Alright, Teacher Xiong, you sit for a bit, I’ll be back shortly."
Jiang Yu wasn’t courteous, said another "sorry," then got up and quickly turned to leave.
Looking at Jiang Yu’s departing back, Teacher Xiong couldn’t help but sigh.
This young man is truly hardworking!
Running such a small shop in the school before even graduating, acting as both the boss and the chef, and ended up not having time for a meal until now.
How many of today’s young people are capable of such hard work?
Thinking of this, Teacher Xiong couldn’t help but think of his own son who’s still in junior high school.
Even at the age of more than ten, he can’t stand any wrongs or hardships.
When the garbage bags at home are full, he drags his feet about going downstairs to throw out the garbage, with a pout big enough to hang a soy sauce bottle; if asked to wash his own dirty socks, he’s unhappy for quite a long time...
Just thinking about it is exhausting!
Speaking of which, it’s because the adults at home spoil him too much. If this continues for a long time, unable to take even a little hardship, what will happen when he grows up?
Looking back at Jiang Yu and comparing the two, Teacher Xiong felt Jiang Yu was someone who could achieve things.
A person who can endure hardships might not succeed, but if he himself is capable and receives external support, what reason does success have to elude him?
Thinking these thoughts, Teacher Xiong couldn’t help but sigh deeply, planning to have a good chat when Jiang Yu returned.
At this moment, a refreshing scent of cilantro mixed with tempting spicy freshness wafted straight to his nose, startling Teacher Xiong with a shiver, and his stomach gurgled!
He immediately stood up, eyes fixed ahead as if trying to see through everything:
"What are they eating?"
