Evander gestured for him to get in the car.

Director Sinir circled around, pulled open the door, and slid into the passenger seat. “The officer on duty that night is a rtive of Commissioner Yates. No matter how I pressed him, he just insisted he’d fallen asleep on shift and no one reported anything unusual to him.”

“And the indoor surveince? There’s a maintenance log for that day. The staff in the control room assumed it was being fixed, figured the suspects were locked in together and nothing serious could go wrong, so…”

The further Sinir exined, the more his voice trailed off, embarrassment coloring his words.

An oversight like this leading to a suspect getting gravely injured–if word reached the higher–ups, it wouldn’t just be his job on the line.

Evander loosened his tie, his tone cool. “Asleep on duty, cameras down? Even if bthe /bholding cell surveince was out, there should still be someone watching twenty–four seven, shouldn’t there?”

He nced over, an icy disdain in his eyes. “Director Sinir, with such an obvious blunder, do you really not see what’s going on here?”

A bead of cold sweat trickled down Sinir’s temple.

Evander’s words were calm, almost casual, but beneath them was a pressure so

sharp and dangerous that Sinir hadn’t felt anything like it since facing government ministers.

“Commissioner Yates.” Evander repeated the name, then asked, “Which Commissioner Yates are we talking about?”

“The one from the Revenue Bureau.”

i“/iAh. That exins it.” Evander’s gaze drifted out the window, his tone t. “Then start by investigating his people.”

Sinir’s shirt was already soaked through, the car’s air conditioning making him shiver as he sat rigid. “But Mr. Howard, Commissioner Yates has connections with Mr. Rayburn…”

“The Rayburn family doesn’t scare me.”

Sinir blinked, taken aback, then nodded. “Understood.”

Packing her things into a cardboard box, she cleared out her office.

A couple of nurses caught sight of Charlotte carrying her box out the door, whispering among themselves. “Is Dr. Sterling resigning?”

Tricia emerged from her office just as Charlotte came down the hallb, /bsurprise flickering in her eyes.

So the little witch finally got fired?

Well, it was about time–she could hardly suppress her glee.

She strolled over, her smile sharp as a de. “There goes one of our best

neurosurgeons. What a shame, Dr. Sterling.”

Charlotte offered a calm, almost indifferent smile. “I think it’s for the best. At least now I don’t have to be around certain two–faced people.”

Tricia’s smile faltered.

Before she could retort, Charlotte brushed past her and walked away.

Outside the hospital entrance, a Rolls–Royce was parked in the most conspicuous

spot.

Natalie was waiting by the car, nodding politely. “Miss Sterling.”

Charlotte walked down the steps just as the rear window glided down, revealing the chiseled, shadowed face of a man whose expression was as unreadable as ever.

Even now, Charlotte couldn’t quite figure him out.

Charlotte heard the subtext and hesitated.

“So it was you who had me suspended?”

A faint smile yed at Evander’s lips. “I thought you could use a real break.”

When she said nothing, he added in his usual, unhurried tone, “As for your brother, I’ve arranged for him to be moved to a better private hospital. He’ll have round–the–clock care, and your family won’t have to worry about the expenses.”
