CHAPTER 72: CHAPTER 46: IMPOSSIBLE TO BE TOGETHER FOR TWO YEARS WITHOUT EMOTIONS 2_2
At that moment, Howard Geoffrey’s gaze shifted to Rebecca Quentin’s chest, evidently noticing the white scar there.
Only when she realized Howard Geoffrey was staring at her chest did Becca come to her senses, tightly clutching the fabric of her nightgown.
"You..." A wave of embarrassment washed over her. At this moment, she didn’t know what to say to him. She turned sideways, buttoned up her pajamas, and gathered her wet hair at the nape of her neck.
But when she turned around again, she found Howard Geoffrey had already turned and left.
Watching his retreating figure, a lump formed in her throat, and her eyes burned slightly. She looked out the window, forcing a faint smile onto her lips.
Was it a mistake by the hotel, or some strange coincidence? Rebecca Quentin decided to find the hotel manager and ask.
Just as Rebecca Quentin picked up the phone to call the hotel manager, a voice sounded, "Hello."
Becca turned and saw a middle-aged man in a suit and leather shoes, clearly a hotel manager.
Indeed, the man spoke, "I am the manager of this hotel. Miss, excuse me, could you please show me your room key card?"
Rebecca Quentin nodded blankly and handed her room key card to the man who claimed to be the hotel manager.
The manager glanced at Rebecca Quentin’s key card and then said apologetically, "Pardon me, may I ask your surname?"
"My surname is Quentin."
"Miss Quentin, I’m very sorry. I’ve checked the records. Room 1806 was booked by Mr. Geoffrey’s secretary the day before yesterday. Your room is 1606, downstairs. It seems our front desk clerk made a mistake with the key cards. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you."
Rebecca Quentin hadn’t anticipated such a situation at all. "Uh..."
"Miss Quentin, if you’d like, we can help you move to room 1606. However, if you’re not satisfied with this resolution, we will refund your entire room charge to compensate for our error."
"There’s no need to change rooms!" Rebecca Quentin said softly, almost without hesitation. "Please check me out. I won’t be staying here tonight."
"Very well, Miss Quentin. Please get changed. I’ll wait for you at the door."
After checking out, Rebecca Quentin dragged her heavy suitcase across the lobby.
She had wanted to leave the hotel quickly, but then, out of the corner of her eye, she unintentionally caught another glimpse of him.
He stood before the hotel’s large floor-to-ceiling windows, one hand in his trouser pocket, the other holding his phone. His handsome face, illuminated by the lights, showed a tender, almost doting expression as he spoke to someone.
She didn’t try to guess who he was talking to. Ignoring him, she straightened her posture and quickened her pace, leaving the hotel.
Outside, the cold night wind swept past, but Rebecca Quentin seemed oblivious to it, continuing to stand by the roadside waiting for a taxi.
Taxis were hard to come by. Suddenly, however, a dazzling blue Ferrari pulled up beside Rebecca Quentin.
Thinking it was a stranger, Rebecca Quentin paid no mind, but the next moment, Roger Leonard stepped out of the car.
"General Leonard?" Clutching her suitcase, Rebecca Quentin looked surprised.
Roger Leonard approached Rebecca Quentin and asked in a gentle tone, "Where’s Dora?"
"Hmm?" Rebecca Quentin, naturally, didn’t understand who "Dora" referred to.
Roger Leonard clarified, "Dora—my second older brother—is your ex-husband, Howard Geoffrey."
Never having expected Roger Leonard to have such a close relationship with Howard Geoffrey, Rebecca Quentin’s face showed a hint of surprise.
Seeing the expression on Rebecca Quentin’s face, Roger Leonard briefly explained, "I met Dora and another close associate in the business world. We got along well, so we started calling each other brothers. Though I don’t know you personally, I know Dora was married to you for two years."
Since it was an undeniable fact, Rebecca Quentin saw no reason to evade it and said openly, "He’s inside."
However, Roger Leonard didn’t seem to be in a hurry to find Dora. Instead, he said casually, "Actually, I came to see you tonight as well."
"Hmm?" Rebecca Quentin was instantly puzzled.
Roger Leonard gazed at Rebecca Quentin’s slightly pale face and said apologetically, "I’m sorry."
"For what?"
"Actually, I knew Dora would be staying here tonight, so I arranged for you to be in his room."
Howard Geoffrey had an ongoing construction project in G City near this airport, so he had been staying at this hotel for the past few days.
Rebecca Quentin, who had initially thought fate was playing a cruel trick on her, widened her eyes in disbelief. "Why would you do such a thing?"
"Because I wanted to know if Dora still cares about you."
Rebecca Quentin shook her head, indicating her confusion.
Roger Leonard explained softly, "Do you know my sister-in-law?"
His sister-in-law? If Dora referred to Howard Geoffrey, then the "sister-in-law" Roger Leonard was talking about was clearly Howard Geoffrey’s wife.
Yes, four years had passed. That beautiful woman named Christine must have married him by now.
Roger Leonard observed the subtle change in Rebecca Quentin’s expression and said slowly, "From your reaction, it’s clear that even if you don’t know my sister-in-law personally, you know of her."
Rebecca Quentin remained silent, a tacit admission.
Roger Leonard stated frankly, "My sister-in-law doesn’t want you to reappear in Dora’s life."
"It seems my transfer from G City was also because of this sister-in-law of yours."
"You are quite perceptive." At that moment, Roger Leonard’s appreciation for Rebecca Quentin deepened.
"General Leonard, you saw what happened tonight. I think you can tell your sister-in-law now that her worries are unfounded."
"Is that so?"
Neither of them expected that, at this very moment, a cool female voice would abruptly cut into their conversation.
They both turned their heads. In their line of sight, Christine Quinn was walking towards them with an elegant, spirited grace.
Roger Leonard looked somewhat surprised. "Sister-in-law?"
Rebecca Quentin’s and Christine Quinn’s eyes met. It seemed that, without a word spoken, they both knew who the other was.
Christine Quinn looked at Rebecca Quentin and said elegantly, "Roger, Miss Quentin still has ample time before she needs to leave for the airport. I’d like to have a few words with her alone."
"Sister-in-law..."
"Don’t worry," Christine Quinn reassured him, "I won’t do anything to her."
After a moment’s hesitation, Roger Leonard got into his car. He didn’t leave, however, merely drove it a short distance away.
Their eyes met again. It was Christine Quinn who broke the silence first.
