CHAPTER 90: CHAPTER 55: GEOFFREY, YOU GOT WHAT YOU DESERVED TODAY! (2)
Her first event attendance was a government-run public welfare event, where her job was to wear the government-prepared dress and serve on-site.
That day, surprisingly, posed no difficulties for her as a novice; everything went smoothly, and once the event ended, the government paid her modeling company, which then took a commission before paying them.
Afterward, she took on a few more jobs one after another, and now she finally understands that this industry is very relaxed and free, and quite well-paying, so she is very satisfied with this job. In the blink of an eye, she has been doing it for over a month.
This morning, she received a call from the modeling company again saying that the government was hosting a banquet at a hotel tonight for a newly launched large construction project, and since the hotel was short-staffed, they requested their company to bring some part-time models for welcoming guests and providing internal services.
Naturally, she would not refuse this money-making opportunity, so she agreed immediately.
But it was only in the afternoon that she suddenly remembered the government’s latest project seemed to be about constructing the tallest commercial building in Asia.
Earlier, TV news had already reported the bidding companies for this project, and she inadvertently noticed that "Skytop" was among them.
Although the bidding results are still unknown, the results will certainly be announced at tonight’s banquet, leaving her conflicted and uncertain whether to take this job.
Thinking back, when Geoffrey and she returned from the US last time, Geoffrey seemed to have come for this project. It was said that the competition was incredibly strong, but she still believes that "Skytop" is determined to win, especially since Geoffrey came in person, and he never wastes time on pointless endeavors.
So, the key question arises: if Geoffrey secures this project, does that mean he will attend the banquet tonight?
OMG...
She’s not really afraid of seeing him at the banquet; she’s afraid of coincidentally bumping into him. The awkwardness aside, she might then have to worry about whether to greet him or not.
If she greets him, it doesn’t seem appropriate as if they had a clean break. If she doesn’t, she feels like she hasn’t moved on.
In any case, this job turned out to be a troublesome one, but as a newcomer, she couldn’t refuse the company’s arrangement, which was truly vexing.
However, after pondering for an entire afternoon, she finally thought of a solution.
She simply decided not to think about it anymore; after all, she already took the job, and whether she runs into him is still uncertain. Even if she does encounter him, she will handle it as the situation unfolds, hoping for everything to naturally take its course.
The hotel.
A large crystal chandelier hung down from the hollow second floor, connecting the upper and lower floors with a spiral staircase. Outside the white-painted floral door of the first-floor banquet hall, styled in pastoral fashion, was a garden. The interior of the second-floor hall was luxuriously decorated, with various high-end tableware exuding a unique elegance under the resplendent lighting.
Perhaps precisely because she dreaded such a scenario, tonight Rebecca Quentin was unexpectedly assigned by the hotel manager to greet guests outside the banquet hall’s main entrance.
It was originally a simple task, but because such a task could very likely lead to a face-to-face encounter with Geoffrey, it caused her to feel a constant unease.
Thus, at this moment when she should have been leading guests upstairs, she discreetly signaled to a colleague.
Understanding her intention, the colleague addressed the guests, "Hello, this way please."
Watching her companion lead the guests upstairs, Rebecca Quentin finally breathed a sigh of relief, albeit still feeling dispirited.
Seeing that there weren’t many guests left, she took advantage of the break to pinch her own face, which had grown stiff from smiling, and bent over to massage her aching legs. Heaven knows how hard it is to wear these twelve-inch heels; she felt like her insteps were about to blister.
While Rebecca Quentin was taking a brief respite, a call from the person in charge made her instantly straighten up, "Rebecca Quentin, the banquet is about to start, come help on the second floor!"
She quickly responded, "Oh, okay, I’ll go right up."
While lifting her blush silk dress skirt, she wondered inwardly, is the banquet really starting? It seems there are still people who haven’t arrived yet!
But thinking in this way was fine; it spared her from more worries.
Just as Rebecca Quentin turned to head upstairs, a tall figure abruptly appeared in her peripheral vision, causing her to halt and glance in that direction.
Perhaps it was the sense of isolation this man emitted that made Rebecca misunderstand; upon turning to look, she realized she had indeed mistaken him for someone else.
The man was indeed handsome, exuding an instantaneously recognizable elegance. But this elegance was unlike Geoffrey’s, whose first impression was an innate aloofness and arrogance, whereas this man looked less than forty, yet subtly revealed a steadiness forged by years of experience, a mind likely more mature than his actual age.
When the man came close, Rebecca bowed respectfully and gently said, "Hello, this way please."
The man glanced at Rebecca and, without any airs, responded with a simple "Mm."
Rebecca then led the man to the second floor.
On the second floor, her assigned task was to pour the champagne tower, so that the waiters could serve it to the guests while allowing guests to enjoy the sight.
Pouring wine was not a skill-intensive task, but watching the champagne flow down from the top, the orange-yellow liquid forming a waterfall-like cascade, she found it interesting and beautiful, so she couldn’t help but become absorbed in it.
However, just because of her absorption, she failed to notice the tall and handsome figure engaging in conversation with several key government officials, causing a small stir.
Rebecca was enjoying the champagne’s flow when a colleague quietly approached her, whispering, "Becca, did you see..."
The sudden whisper startled Rebecca, who turned to find her coworker’s eyes sparkling and fixed ahead, looking like she was savoring the scene in front of her.
"Uh, see what?"
Curious, Rebecca followed her colleague’s line of sight.
The next second, her heart skipped a beat.
In the dim light, it seemed as if a spotlight was moving with him above.
Dressed in a perfectly tailored, expensive suit, effortlessly engaging in conversation and laughter with those around him, at this moment, he exuded an irresistible blazing charm, drawing attention like a king.
