Ling Chuxia paused, her eyes lifting gently to meet the gaze of the man in front of her.

Che was squatting, and she was seated in the chair by the entryway, so their eyes met instantly, those deep brown irises radiating a warm glow as always.

His lips curved into a slight smile, and instead of speaking first, he quietly lowered his gaze, one hand holding her foot, the other working on the buckle of her high heels.

Though he had never done such a thing before, at that moment he seemed incredibly natural and fluent. He undid the buckle, slowly slipped the high-heeled shoe from her foot, then fetched her house slippers and slipped them onto her feet, one by one.

Chuxia just stared blankly at Che’s every move, unable to react. It wasn’t until Che had finished and looked up into her dazed eyes that the smile on his lips deepened. "What’s with that expression?"

Chuxia blinked, a warmth flooding her eyes and a sourness in her chest, but she dared not show it, trying her best to curve her lips into a smile. "Nothing, how come you got back so early today?"

These days he had been almost constantly busy, either not coming back at all, or returning late into the night. At just past eight, she hadn’t expected him to already be home.

"Early?"

Che’s eyebrows arched playfully, his deep voice laced with languor. "Did you forget? We had plans to dine together tonight."

Che had been so busy these days and spent little time with Chuxia, so in the morning, he had made plans with her to have dinner together tonight. He hadn’t expected to come home to find Chuxia out, with her phone unanswered.

At Che’s reminder, a thought flashed through Chuxia’s mind, and she suddenly remembered that Che indeed mentioned he would be home for dinner, that she had said she would cook something delicious for Che tonight. Yet because of that medical examination result, she had forgotten everything.

Guilt flickered across Chuxia’s eyes, and her voice grew low. "I’m sorry, Che... I, I went..."

Chuxia nearly blurted out her visit to the hospital that day, but as the words reached her lips, she stopped abruptly.

Could she now... could she tell Che that she might never be able to get pregnant?

What would he do if she told him?

He loved children so much... just yesterday, he whispered in her ear, asking her to bear him children, lots and lots of children...

A shadow passed over Chuxia’s eyes, and for some reason, she found herself unable to speak the words. Her hand involuntarily clenched as she took a breath, and without thinking, she told a lie.

"I went shopping and just... just forgot."

"Shopping?"

Che’s gaze swept over her hands; besides her purse, there were no shopping bags in sight, nothing that appeared as if she had been out shopping.

Sensing Che’s scrutiny, Chuxia’s heart gave a little jolt, and she quickly added another line. "I shopped all day and found nothing worth buying, I’m utterly exhausted from walking."

As Chuxia spoke, she even pouted slightly, her tone tinged with a hint of complaint.

At Chuxia’s grumbling, Che felt a mix of amusement and exasperation. "You forgot about our dinner plans because you went shopping, and now you have the nerve to complain?"

"I was just so bored at home by myself!" Chuxia continued to whine, trying to divert Che’s attention.
