CHAPTER 212: AFTER THE MODIFICATION: VOLUME 4 CHAPTER 9 SLEEPWALKING
Fatty lifted his head up, confused and sobbing: "I... I am truly innocent!"
The burly man looked at Fatty’s dazed expression, knowing that this guy was probably not right in the head. He waved his hand impatiently and said, "I don’t give a damn whether you’re innocent or not. Tell me, what did you do to end up here?"
"Innocent...."
Seeing that Fatty was about to plead his innocence again, the burly man angrily said, "If you shout ’innocent’ one more time, I’ll beat you for three hours straight, do you believe it?" Seeing Fatty frightened into silence, the burly man cracked his knuckles and cursed, "Enough... damned idiot, what crime did they pin on you?"
Fatty pleaded pitiably, "They said... said I was a spy..."
All the prisoners in the room were stunned and couldn’t help but burst into laughter. Pinning such a charge on this fat guy, it was truly creative! With this foolish look, did he deserve to be a spy?
Bald Rex laughed and laughed, then suddenly his face turned serious, full of thick flesh and his sinister, triangular eyes moved constantly over Fatty. After a long moment, he nodded towards a small, skinny guy alongside and said, "Tou’er, go, see what this fat guy has on him."
Tou’er cheerfully walked over to Fatty, looked him over, and cursed, "This guy looks like a total pauper, probably stripped of everything and thrown in here, doesn’t look like he has anything on him!" Clearly, this guy was an experienced thief with sharp eyes. He instantly saw that Fatty had nothing on him, and with nimble movements, his hands feather-light, Fatty didn’t even feel a thing as the guy patted him down inside and out. After finishing, Tou’er spat and turned to Rex, saying, "Damn it, Rex, this guy has nothing!"
Bald Rex was obviously extremely disappointed. Furious, he lunged forward, grabbed Fatty and asked, "Fatty, didn’t bring any money in?"
Fatty responded fearfully, "...They took everything... I have nothing left."
Rex, enraged, slapped Fatty hard across the face. "No money and you dare to come to prison?" He grabbed Fatty by the collar and dragged him to the corner of the room, kicking him in the stomach, knocking him to the ground. Still unsatisfied, he grabbed Fatty’s hair, slamming his head against the wall, cursing, "I hate idiots like you! Poor and dumb! Stay here and don’t move, or I’ll break your legs!"
Fatty, like a ragged sack, let him do as he pleased, moaning in pain and crying loudly, curled up in the corner, as pitiful as could be, resembling a cowardly chicken waiting to be slaughtered, showing no resistance to the powerful opponent.
People like him are not rare in Abnosk Prison. The prison is often the place that most clearly embodies survival of the fittest. Here, without support or strength, one is at the mercy of others. Except for political prisoners and nobility, most who enter Abnosk Prison are ruthless and vicious individuals. Not only do these people habitually dominate others’ lives outside, but they do the same in prison. Wherever they go, they find ways to place themselves above others, controlling them, gaining more benefits than others is their nature. No matter how harsh or serene the environment, in their minds, the best things belong to them! And the comfortable life in prison can only be built on the bullying and humiliation of other prisoners.
"Damn it, kid! Shape up when you’re here, don’t act like a hero in front of me. If you’re a tiger, lie down; if you’re a dragon, coil up!" This is a phrase nearly every newcomer hears. Some end up using the same superior tone later, while most learn silence. Similar sayings exist in the military, they have rules and laws there. In prison, these criminals naturally form their own rules! This place is practically a closed society! The relationships between people are unimaginably complex! The leaders have sophisticated methods of control, using threats and intimidation, rewards and punishments, each has their own way of managing people. Anyone with a bit of fighting spirit will have every ounce of courage squeezed out by these old-timers.
Newcomers face a three-floor interrogation and a ’killing rod’ as an unchanging method in prison. No matter how fearless or stubborn by nature, they get turned into soft eggs, or else, how could these leaders intimidate the vicious criminals? Fatty naturally couldn’t escape this treatment upon arrival, especially since he looked honest, weak, easily bullied, and penniless, making him an easy target for fun.
In this cell, besides Rex, the other four prisoners were small and skinny, clearly people without the means to take risks. So when Fatty arrived, Rex had to handle things personally. In a different place, with just the command of these prison bullies, a variety of bizarre and extreme tortures would be employed by their minions, making it hard for newcomers to take a comfortable seat without shedding three layers of skin! That endless torment could truly drive a person to collapse.
