Above the pit, the sunlight reflected from the mirror set up by Sun Jinzhong had already reached the bottom of the pit.
However, those beams of fierce sunlight were scattered, here and there, not focusing very concentratively.
Taking a shovel from one of the workers, Chen Hai, at the bottom of this pit, drew another circle.
“Brother Zhong, adjust the angle of the mirror you set up, and make sure that the reflected sunlight is all focused inside the circle I just drew!”
After handing the shovel back to the worker, Chen Hai looked up and shouted at Sun Jinzhong above.
“Got it, will do right away!” Sun Jinzhong, standing at the edge of the pit and peering down, hurriedly responded.
It took only a moment to adjust the angle of the mirror.
In less than ten minutes, as Chen Hai saw that the reflected sunlight was now shining inside the circle about one or two meters in diameter that he had drawn, he finally nodded in satisfaction.
“You guys, just stand inside the circle of light and start digging straight down!”
“Remember, be careful, the thing I’m talking about should be right under this spot, maybe ten to twenty centimeters down!”
Stepping back a bit, Chen Hai advised them kindly.
“Don’t worry, Master Chen, we are the old hands at this!”
“During construction, we’ve already seen skeletons and bones not just once or twice!”
“Sitting on those kinds of things and smoking, nothing ever happens to us!”
…
The workers looked at each other, unconcerned, laughed it off with a chuckle.
“Pfft,” with a sound.
The worker named Wu, his shovel struck something that clearly made a very different sound from digging into the soil.
“Wood?” Seeing a piece of decayed and blackened wood turn up in the soil, Wu paused slightly.
But he didn’t pay much attention to it and casually tossed the wood to one side.
“Holy shit, what the hell is this…”
Moments later, a grim and gruesome skull with dried flesh attached appeared before the workers.
If that had been all, it might have been bearable.
But that desiccated skull was actually enveloped by swirling dark energy, churning up and down.
That dark energy, like slender black worms, began to ‘sizzle’ the moment it touched the scorching sunlight reflected from the mirror.
As this dark energy was continually dissolved by the sunlight, the skull the workers had just dug up rapidly turned to bone before their very eyes.
This scene, even for the workers who prided themselves on being seasoned and knowledgeable, was somewhat frightening!
After all, that dark energy wasn’t motionless; it moved about like living things, scattering in all directions.
Some of it even managed to evade the sunlight and slip into the surrounding shadows.
“Master Chen, I regret this now, can I stop digging?”
The worker named Hei, with a mournful expression, turned around and pleaded with Chen Hai.
“Guys, you really don’t have to worry, those black energies are just insects bred from resentment!”
“The sun is directly overhead now, at its most intense.
As long as you stand in the sunlight reflected from the mirror, that dark energy will instantly dissolve.
It can’t even touch you!”
Chen Hai hurriedly spoke up, persuading them.
The workers in front of him, if they really backed off like this, the task of continuing to dig down couldn’t possibly fall to him personally, could it?
Above the pit, the few people who had been staring at the bottom of the hole had also seen the eerie sight of the black qi darting around.
Director Tao was at a loss for words, even now, he still couldn’t close his mouth.
This guy, Zeng Zhiguo, he opened his mouth as if he had something to say, but hesitated, and ultimately didn’t say anything.
“Master Chen, the owner of this skull was nailed to a door plank by his limbs and buried alive in an upright position!”
“This is a ‘living stake’!
Whoever touches this kind of thing is going to have bad luck!”
“I have parents above me, a wife and children below; please let us off the hook and let us leave!”
Among the workers, Wu, being relatively older, dug a few more shovels and seemed to discern even more from them.
At this moment, with a pained expression on his face, the words that came out of his mouth were almost akin to begging.
Hearing what Wu said, the other two workers instantly turned pale with changes in their complexions.
“Indeed, what’s buried below is a ‘living stake’, but you all saw what happened just now!”
“With my arrangements in place, that black qi couldn’t touch a single hair on you!”
“If you are willing to continue digging, I’ll personally subsidize you with fifty yuan each…”
Chen Hai promised through clenched teeth.
For these workers in front of him, a day’s wage was at most ten yuan; fifty yuan was indeed a considerable sum for them.
“Master Chen, it’s not a matter of money; I absolutely refuse to do anything like digging up a ‘living stake’, no matter how much I’m paid!” Wu’s head shook like a rattle drum.
Compared to Wu, the youngest among them, Hei, reacted even worse.
“Mr.
Chen, don’t think you’re so great just because you have money.
If you want this job done, do it yourself; don’t drag us into it!”
With a toss of the shovel in his hand, Hei left without another word, walking up the slope and away from the pit.
His departure sparked Wu and the other worker to do the same; they exchanged looks and followed suit, throwing down their shovels and dropping their burdens.
Watching them leave, Chen Hai sighed and did not attempt to stop them.
After all, their foreman, Zeng Zhiguo, simply gave a wry smile and shook his head, without saying much else.
As an outsider, Chen Hai had even less reason to force the workers to do anything.
“Brother Zhong, come down, it’s just excavating a skeleton, isn’t it?
If others don’t want the money, we’ll do it ourselves!”
Raising his voice, Chen Hai called out to Sun Jinzhong, who was watching from above the pit.
“Alright!” Sun Jinzhong quickly responded.
“A bunch of cowards, still calling themselves construction workers?
It’s just a skeleton, and yet they’re afraid to this extent…”
As he descended into the pit, he spat on the ground, giving a contemptuous look and glared fiercely at Wu and Hei who had just come up.
With Sun Jinzhong’s help, the two picked up their shovels and continued digging.
The mummified corpse was indeed as Wu had described: the limbs were nailed with four seven-inch nails to a decayed door plank.
With each segment dug up, black qi would churn and then be dissolved away by the intense reflection of sunlight from the mirror.
As the mummified parts were unearthed and the black qi dissipated, they transformed into dry bones.
This spectacle was exceedingly strange; not just Chen Hai and Sun Jinzhong felt a chill, even Director Tao and the others watching felt uneasy and frightened.
Sun Jinzhong, in his heart, was actually terrified to death, but with Chen Hai there, at least he wouldn’t back down.
The two cousins busied themselves for nearly an hour before they finally excavated the skeleton, nailed to the door plank, in its entirety.
