CHAPTER 40: NO BODY

The lady snapped out of her gaze when she heard his voice. She apologized quickly. "I’m sorry, please what can I do for you?" She smiled brightly, saying that line with too much vigor.

Zane didn’t mind, though. Right now, his focus was getting into that dungeon and getting stronger.

"I want to register as an adventurer, the three of us," he said.

When he said "the three of us," she saw that he was actually three. She looked at Grey, he was good-looking as well, but not comparable to Zane. Then she looked at Lucy; her expression darkened the moment she saw her.

Lucy was extremely beautiful. For sure, she had something to do with Zane. The receptionist saw her chance vanish before she could grasp it. She clenched her teeth. Men weren’t limited to one lady after all, she would still fight for it.

’Did I activate charm by mistake? Why is this lady acting like this?’ Zane wondered. ’Is my looks that good?’ He felt a sense of smugness rise in him.

"Alright, you three just have to fill in your information." The receptionist finally got to her job. She pulled out three forms and a quill. Zane filled his own first, then Grey, and finally Lucy.

The receptionist took the forms. She read through them and frowned, none of them put down any elemental affinity or any sort of magic; they only ticked the box for martial arts.

It was odd for someone to not have any affinity and still want to be an adventurer. Even with some sword training, it was still advised, unless you were a Chosen, which they weren’t, evidently.

Zane noticed the look on her face and asked, "Is there any issue?"

She shook her head. "No, there isn’t. Please wait a moment for me," she said and rummaged through the cupboard below. Then she brought out a slab of what looked like black glass, and a magical circle was drawn on it.

"Please place your hands one after the other on it. This device will read and send the final information we need to get your cards ready," she said.

Zane stood up first and placed his hand on the device. The magic circle glowed and started taking the reading.

"You know, the adventurer life is really tasking. Especially now, with the Chosen, monsters became harder to kill, and the dungeons became harder to clear."

The lady started yapping without being asked. Zane blocked her out of his mind; he wasn’t interested. He finished his reading, then Grey took his own, and finally Lucy.

After they were done, she took the slab and the forms and went into a room at the back. A minute later, she returned with three cards.

She handed them to Zane. "I guess I’ll be seeing you more around here," she said.

"No, I doubt that." Zane gave a short answer and walked away with the cards, leaving the receptionist stunned. She gritted her teeth in anger. Did he just blatantly refuse her?

She wasn’t having any of that. She stood there at the desk, fuming. A player saw her and walked up to her. He had long blonde hair and was dressed in all black.

"What’s the problem, Miss Elaine? You look angry," he spoke.

When she heard his voice, she was about to snap because he had been pestering her ever since he came into this world. He wasn’t bad-looking, he was actually handsome, but not her type.

But rather than snap this time, an idea popped in her head, so she showed him a smile. "Hey Leon, yes, I’m angry. That adventurer disrespected me," she said, pointing to Zane.

Leon heard that and was about to rush forward, but she grabbed him over the counter and pulled him back.

"Don’t rush, you fuckhead," she cursed. "Since you want to go out on a date with me so much, then I have a proposition for you to finally get your date. You’ve formed a faction, and you guys have good numbers and strength.

So find that man and bring him to me secretly. You can’t overly injure his body or face, do you understand? Only if you need to can you hurt him, but not the face.

If you can do that for me, I’ll go on a date with you," she said, then leaned in close to his ear. "You might even get a kiss," she said in a light, seductive tone.

Leon’s eyes lit up when he heard that. He turned and looked at her. "Consider it done," he said and walked away, happy and ready to win his date.

"Tsk." She clicked her tongue and scoffed. "What a fucking loser," she muttered as she watched Leon walk away. Some men never know when they are simps and stupid. No self-respect, no worth.

She loved a man that exuded confidence, not one that would lay on the floor for her to walk on. She wanted someone like Zane: aloof, confident, and the pinnacle of beauty.

[.....]

Zane, on the other hand, was unaware of what was happening. He simply didn’t have the time for random ladies. He had a lot of growing stronger to do. And even if he wanted ladies, he had the lineage of beauty: Lucy and the seductress demon that wanted him.

Both were extremely beautiful, so why would he settle for the advances of a receptionist?

’Am I becoming proud? Maybe I am. I don’t really care though,’ Zane thought.

They made it back to the carriage, but Ava wasn’t there. They looked around for a few seconds, then spotted her walking out of an alley, a smile on her face.

Zane could smell the blood on her right off the bat. "You killed someone," he said in a low tone.

"His death was supposed to be easy and I’d then absorb him dry, but he put up a fight and it got bloody. I was hungry, needed to eat," she said.

"Sigh, whatever. Just take us out of here before they find the body," Zane said.

"Don’t worry about it, there’s no body," she said and got on the carriage.
