ACT 6: CHAPTER 15: THE OBSERVER AND THE FINAL CHANCE (SIDE: NYARLHOTEP)

「M-Master! Since when did you…」

Nyarlhotep spoke to his master with an accusatory tone.

「The defeat of the 《Invisible Hand of God》 this time… is a mark to end Locklore. Any more intervention than this would be overkill. So rather than meddling needlessly only to fail time and time again, I'd rather find a way to wrap things up nicely.」

「WHA–!」

Nyarlhotep was at a loss for words upon hearing a statement akin to a death penalty from his master.

To begin with, his master had already warned him that there would be no more chances once the 《Invisible Hand of God》 was defeated.

However, Nyarlhotep still held a faint hope that there might be a way to turn the tables.

He couldn’t accept the fact that Locklore was going to be erased.

「D-Don't mess with me! No matter how you wrap it up, this mess that ends with us having to erase Locklore will leave a mark that will stay with me for eternity, ending my career all at once! Are you telling me that I'm going to be brought down because of those ants!?」

Nyarlhotep shouted his protest toward the direction of his master's voice.

Nyarlhotep's face twisted in shock.

In the divine realm, That Personage could only refer to a single entity.

It was the highest-ranking god, the origin of everything.

Among the gods, where advanced magical technology solved all problems, honor and entertainment reigned supreme. The status of entertainment was far higher than in human society.

Therefore, it was not uncommon for those in power to intervene in the development of a single form of entertainment.

「They are looking forward to seeing the natural conclusion of Locklore… in the hands of Kanata Kanbara. I received a strict warning not to wrap things up with a boring conclusion due to operational concerns. In short, erasing Locklore for no reason isn’t an option anymore.」

「D-Does that mean… I got another chance?」

「From your perspective, you did manage to keep your head. But from my perspective… haah, I'm forced to extend this against my will. That said, having you, even if you’re just a mere fragment of me, charging directly into the fray won’t do. You may have lost the 《Invisible Hand of God》, but you have another pawn, right?」

「Do I really have another pawn?」

Nyarlhotep asked back doubtfully.

Aside from Kanata, Nyarlhotep didn’t know of another being in Locklore whose level was higher than Lunaire.

The 《Invisible Hand of God》, which had the biggest chance of success if properly prepared, ended up being defeated after their scattered members were ambushed and crushed before regrouping.

As far as Nyarlhotep knew, he had no pawn left.

「Those three should be able to kill both Lunaire and Kanata.」

「Those three… Are you telling me to release those greatest sinners imprisoned in another dimension!?」

The color drained from Nyarlhotep’s face.

In the past, there were three natives of Locklore who disrupted the balance of the world.

They rejected the offer to work as supervisors in the 《Invisible Hand of God》 and only desired to drive the world into ruin with their overwhelming power.

However, Locklore was entertainment that tracked those who came from another world.

While Nyarlhotep and the others claimed to interfere with the world only to a minimum extent, there was still room to secretly dispose of the natives who had little connection with the otherworlders.

Nyarlhotep forcibly maintained the balance of power in Locklore by imprisoning those three individuals in another dimension, all while keeping it hidden from the gods who enjoyed the world of Locklore as entertainment.

「Indeed, while I did imprison them instead of killing them… it would be like exposing my blunder by revealing how much I have interfered with their actions in the past! Moreover, if I were to unleash them, Locklore would not come out unscathed either.」

Those three were uncontrollable and destructive variables.

It wouldn’t just end with the disposal of Kanata.

To begin with, revealing that the management had secretly imprisoned troublesome natives and then publicly releasing them for the sake of operational convenience was a contradiction in itself.

The facade of non-interference by the management of Locklore would become truly unsalvageable.

That would put an end to Locklore's value as entertainment.

「Yeah, releasing them will put an end to Locklore's value as entertainment. It goes without saying that it's excessive intervention, meaning that Locklore can’t go on anymore. There’s no point in eliminating Kanata either… However, That Personage wishes to see a flashy conclusion. Since it’s impossible to control Locklore anymore, let’s just focus on ending it in the most entertaining way.」

「-But if Locklore perishes, isn’t that the same as disposing of me? If that’s your intention, then I refuse to be pointlessly disgraced any further just because of something like Locklore!」

「Be at ease. Locklore might lose its entertainment value, but you win as long as That Personage is satisfied. That Personage can create a chance to clear your reputation.」

Nyarlhotep's master didn’t break their promise.

Trust was the most important thing among the gods.

As long as his master said they would save him, all he needed was to fulfill his duty so that he wouldn’t be disposed of along with Locklore.

「I-I understand. Since that’s the case, I’ll do my best till the end. Moreover… I’ll directly drive Kanata to death for sullying my career.」

「Crush Locklore along with Kanata… and present the ultimate bad end for That Personage. Present the best end for the pitiful otherworlder and the world that dared to rebel against the gods.」

「Yes, leave it to me. Those sinners are more than a match for Lunaire. I’ll make sure that Kanata Kanbara feels the ultimate hell after daring to make a complete fool of me!」

A faint, dark smile formed on Nyarlhotep's face, twisted by malice and anger.

「However… you know, right? If by the slightest chance Kanata Kanbara comes out as the victor, we won’t be able to touch him again. We wouldn’t just lose a way to interfere with Locklore; since That Personage is watching, we wouldn’t be able to conveniently erase Kanata either. However, it doesn’t mean we can’t use a roundabout way.」

「Neither intervention, erasure, nor continuation is possible? In short, what are you trying to do?」

「We’re utterly cornered without being able to do anything. Don’t ever let it come to that. If it comes to that, even a high-rank god like myself won’t be able to get away with it just by dumping all the blame on you. Not only will the other gods be disappointed, but we will also incur That Personage’s displeasure as well.」
