CHAPTER 62: GUNGNIR (1).
Nero felt the all the breath in his jump out of his lungs as he parried the blow.
The movement of the slender Demon was something that had caught him by surprise.
His body shot back, his feet skidding against the ground as he sought to regain his balance.
With a loud shriek, the hybrid Demon was already rushing at him, its enormous stinger already raised.
’Not good!’
He shot behind a building. The next moment the ground where he had been exploded into a rain of debris and dust.
From behind his hiding spot, his eyes turned wide.
’What in the seven Hells was that?!’
The stinger had not moved. And yet, if had created an explosion that turned hard stone into dust.
His eyes had not even been able to register what had happened.
His body trembled lightly. But he didn’t have any more time to be amazed or horrified, as the next second, he building behind him was sliced right in half.
Nero looked up to see the slender Demon bearing over him.
Without thinking, he whipped his sword out.
The edge of the Silver Blade created a radiant crescent as it smashed against the sharp arm of the beast.
Another arm shot at him, but he quickly parried it.
His eyes turned dark as the shadows wrapped around him.
Then he shot forward at blinding speed— speed that momentarily surpassed that of the creature he was facing.
In a split second, he had rushed into its personal space. With a grunt, he cut upwards.
The tip of his blade cut through the hard stone flesh of the Demon.
Nero’s expression fell.
Although he had put a lot of his strength into the slash, it had done barely any damage.
’These things are quite hardy.’
He leapt backwards to make space when he sensed the danger coming from behind. Without even looking, he stopped and rolled to the side.
The ground where he had stood a moment ago disappeared. In its place was a large crater.
The sharp rocks shot into the air, with some grazing his flesh and leaving behind deep cuts.
Gritting his teeth, Nero shot back and began racing towards the fat Demon.
He had rushed into his battle without much of a game plan. Granted, there was not much planning he could do that would be enough to handle these things.
He looked down at the Silver Blade.
Although its edge was sharp, it wasn’t meant to cut through stone.
At the end of the day, it was a regular blade with an enchantment attached to it. It could not go against its original nature.
He wore a grimaced on his face as he leapt into the air.
Landon in a roof, he ran to gather momentum and dashed into another roof as well.
He turned his gaze towards the fat Demon. Its hollow eyes were trained right on him.
He watched as the thing raised its stone chalice to its mouth then took a deep gulp of whatever was within it.
Its dark maw opened up even more. A swift stream of blackness shot right at him.
Using Shadow Shift, Nero found himself gliding through the shadows.
A moment later, he was in the ground a few meters away from the building. Or at least what was left of it.
Turning around, Nero felt a cold, icy feeling wrap around his spine.
The building had been reduced into a bubbling pool of black sludge.
"What the hell?!" He exclaimed out loud.
Dodging to the side, he avoided a sweeping cut from the slender Demon that had launched itself over a building and crashed into another.
’How do I defeat these things?’ he thought to himself with furrowed brows.
Individually, none of them could kill him at the moment.
However, he also couldn’t do much to them.
And even worse, they would only continue to get stronger as time when by so whatever advanced he possibly could possess would be gone very soon.
The battle had to end as soon as possible.
He jumped onto another building and began racing towards the fat Demon.
A look of determination flashed in his eyes,
’As long as I can get to that one, I won’t need to be worried about ranged bombardment.’
As though sensing his intentions, the fat Demon put the chalice to its lips once again and spat out another dart of blackness mist.
Nero dodged again and continued while the other two chased behind him.
Dozens of buildings crumbled to dust as the battle heated up in intensity.
It was less of a battle and more of a chase. Or a game of dodging death itself.
Either way, Nero had been reduced to a scrambling rat.
Still, a cornered rat would bite.
Nero pushed himself off another roof and activated Shadow Shift.
His body seemed to melt into.the surrounding darkness as he rushed forward, landing at the roots of the tree.
His blade sang as he cut a fallen branch in half and rushed forward.
Passing the ruins of the temple, he didn’t have time to think about it.
In mere moments, he was just a few meters away from the robust Demon.
A shadow descended over him as the Demon raised its enormous club into the air and swung down.
Eyes gleaming with the darkness, Nero activated Shadow Shift again, narrowly dodging the club.
Pushing his body to the physical limit, he relief on the dying momentum of his skill to propel himself forward even more.
Then he leapt into the air.
The muscles in his arms bulged, thick veins flowing with the very essence of corruption itself as he swung.
The edge of his blade seemed to ignite with silver flames as it traveled horizontally, smashing into the neck of the Gargoyle.
There was a loud bang.
Nero’s face turned pale.
His attack had failed completely.
The Silver Blade had struck the neck of the Demon. However, its edge had barely been able to cut even three inches deep— clearly not enough to even be considered a flesh wound to something of this size.
He stared into the hollow eyes of the damned evil being.
The Demon’s maw stretched wide open as it belched out a stream of the dangerous, black breath.
