"Knights Templar," he immediately picked up on what she was trying to say.
"Indeed," Rias nodded, "They are a secretive order and not many know of their presence. Even among our society knowledge about them is scarce, and what little that exists is for high-level devils to hear only. What we do know is that they hate us with a passion that borders on madness, and they will kill any of us on sight, no matter if we have committed a crime or not," her expression hardened, "My brother has lost friends to them before. The fact that they have showed up in such numbers is of great concern and does not bode well for us."
"Do you think they are here because of me?" he asked the first question that came to his mind.
Rias smiled grimly.
"They are very likely here because of you. What little interaction we have had with the Knights Templar suggests they glorify in slaying devils. They take pride in how many they have killed," disgust had crept into the girl’s tone and he found that he could not blame her, "Your summoning of Belial must have piqued their ambitions. They came with the express purpose of killing an Archdemon, but were surprised by an Archangel instead. There is a twisted irony to that, I suppose."
He could not disagree. The devil’s features became serious.
"The threat of the Knights Templar is over, but I fear they are one very small piece to a much larger puzzle. The one who has stolen the Excaliburs has still not shown up."
That was news to him.
"One of them escaped," he said, thinking he had heard wrong, "The other was killed by Yuuto."
"Those two alone would not be capable of it," Rias replied with a frown, "Even we devils know that the Excaliburs are tightly guarded. The Templars would not be capable of it either. They may be detested by their own faction, but they still answer to the Church. Stealing the Excaliburs would be equivalent to sacrilege for them," she shook her head, "No, there must be another helping them. Someone who is much more powerful and much more cunning. Enough to overpower the guards where the swords are kept and enough to influence the Knights Templar to aid them."
He digested that information and found it troubling.
"The two exorcists said the intent behind stealing the Excaliburs was to start a war."
"Which means he or she will have to find a new way to start said war. And since the subtle way didn’t work, the only other option left to them is force," the devil let out a tired breath. Her frustration showed, and he was struck with the thought that perhaps being a master of a peerage was not as easy as it looked, "Sona and I have evacuated Kuoh Academy in case such a thing happens. We have misled the faculty into believing it is for renovation purposes. As for the students," a wry smile lit across her face, "I believe they are glad for any break in the school year."
He ignored the jest and focused on the implication instead.
"You think they will select Kuoh Academy as a target?"
"It is the place where two high-class devils and their peerages spend most of the day. The concentration by itself makes it an attractive target. More than that, it would be a symbolic gesture to attack a school, and nothing provokes the public more than attacking children," she looked frustrated again, "I have asked my brother for aid. Sirzechs agrees with my view but he is hesitant in committing his forces to what is, and hopefully will remain, a whim. That, and he is reluctant in gathering any amount of devils in this city after what happened with the Excaliburs. The angels and the Church can still be provoked into a war."
"So things still remain on a knife’s edge."
Rias smiled at his bluntness.
"As I have said, it is merely a guess for now. There is a chance that everything is fine and Freed and Valper were the only ones responsible for the theft. But that would be relying on optimism, and since when has things fallen into place based solely on optimism?"
She had no idea how much his impression of her grew after that.
"Which is why I am worried about you," her eyes shone with concern, "Sona and I have agreed that guarding Kuoh Academy should be our duty. Our peerages will remain on school grounds for a few days, just in case my guess is accurate. We believe that our numbers combined should be sufficient in warding off any threat. It might make us a concentrated target, but there is safety in a group. You will have no such protection, and if we can find where you live, our enemies can as well."
He could guess her intent.
"You want me to join the effort in guarding the school," he said slowly.
Rias nodded.
"Your presence will be a welcome addition to our force. We can also help you. So far it has been only you saving my peerage. Let us return the favor."
