CHAPTER 139: CHAPTER 142: BURNT CONFUSION
After getting in the car, Caleb quickly stopped the bleeding for Kyle, who leaned back in the rear seat with his eyes closed, resting. From Caleb, Mabel learned that someone had seen her being kidnapped and put into the car, so they called the police. Coincidentally, Kyle had some business at the police station today, and upon learning about this incident, he immediately checked the surveillance footage and discovered where the car had stopped last. He then drove straight to the warehouse.
"Was the person who called the police Lyra Grant?" Mabel asked.
"Why do you ask? The person who called sounded like an old man," Caleb replied.
Mabel pressed her lips together, "Lyra Grant just happened to see me being kidnapped and put into the car."
Caleb said, "There was only one call received at the time." In other words, Lyra Grant didn’t call the police at all.
At the hospital, Kyle immediately received emergency treatment from the doctor. Caleb suggested that Mabel get checked to see if she had any injuries. Mabel quickly said, "No need, I’m not hurt at all." At most, she was just pressed to the ground by those thugs, with some bruising on her elbow joints.
The doctor applied medication to Kyle, bandaged his wounds, and explained that the patient might have a fever at night, and prescribed some medication.
Not long after returning from the hospital to Kyle’s residence, he fell into a deep sleep. Mabel looked at Kyle, who lay pale on the bed, and said to Caleb, "Secretary Caleb, you have been busy with my affairs all day. Tonight, I’ll take care of him."
Caleb thought for a moment and replied, "Alright then, I still have to handle some matters at the police station, so I’ll leave it to you, Mabel."
After Caleb left, Mabel pulled a chair to Kyle’s bedside and sat down. Thankfully, the doctor said that the stab was not deep, did not injure muscles or bones, but because he didn’t stop the bleeding immediately, he lost quite a bit of blood and needed a good rest for some time.
Her face had already been washed at the hospital, and the blood that had dripped onto it was cleaned off, but the warm sensation seemed to linger, making her face continually burn.
She never thought he would save her like that, unwilling to let her get hurt, so he used his own body to block the dagger.
Her family had abandoned her, yet he helped and saved her time and again.
"Why did you do that?" She murmured softly, but got no answer.
She looked at the thin layer of sweat forming on his forehead and couldn’t help but reach out to gently brush his bangs aside.
Suddenly, his brows furrowed, his head moving slightly, as if something was bothering him.
She touched his forehead, just as the doctor said, he had started to run a fever.
She got up, intending to get the ice pack the doctor advised for physical cooling, but unexpectedly, he suddenly muttered, "No, don’t come over!"
Mabel was stunned for a moment, looking down at Kyle, seeing the sweat on his forehead visibly increasing, his face, previously devoid of color, was now blushing from the fever. At the same time, he had a clear expression of unease and fear, as if experiencing a nightmare.
"Kyle, what’s wrong?" she couldn’t help but ask.
His head moved more vigorously, his lips murmuring, "Mommy... don’t... don’t hit me... I’ll... I’ll be good..."
