CHAPTER 201: CHAPTER 206: TESTING
Grace Yowell started the car and said, "Mabel, there are a lot of people online saying that the novel by Lyra Grant wasn’t written by her. Morningstar has suppressed it for the sake of the film, but have you ever thought about proving it was you who wrote it?"
"I used to think about it, but now I don’t dwell on it so much. I’ll just let things take their course," Mabel Quinn replied. After all, back when she wrote the book, she really didn’t have any solid evidence to prove it. There were just scattered chat records discussing the plot with friends. The most crucial piece, the manuscript, had probably long been destroyed by Lyra Grant. Now, if she came forward claiming the novel was hers, it would likely stir up a lot of controversy.
Grace Yowell felt a slight relief when she heard this. She was really worried that Mabel would go online claiming the book as hers, bringing the news back into the spotlight, and then Daniel Harris might notice her.
However, Grace Yowell was completely unaware that Mabel had already crossed paths with Daniel Harris.
The car pulled up to the charity event location, and Mabel Quinn followed Grace Yowell into the event. Today, the attendees were all women; hardly any men were seen. Mabel then realized that this was an event hosted by a socialite from City J, inviting elite ladies and prominent women like Grace Yowell.
The female guests at the entire event dressed meticulously, each striving to outshine the other. Mabel Quinn felt like an ugly duckling among these swans.
A lady approached to greet Grace Yowell. Noticing Mabel as a new face and hearing Grace say that Mabel was just a small-time scriptwriter from Morningstar accompanying her, the lady took one look at Mabel’s outfit—clothing and shoes of cheap make—and became even more convinced that Mabel was just a bumpkin.
"Nowadays, all kinds of people can sneak into these charity events, reducing the class of it all."
"Oh, what’s being said here?" A few other expensively dressed ladies came over.
"Nothing much, just talking about how some people find a way to get in, probably hoping to network a bit. But they don’t even look at themselves, their whole outfit probably doesn’t cost over a thousand bucks. What money do they have to donate or do any good?" The lady spoke, glancing suggestively at Mabel.
The other ladies understood instantly, openly ridiculing Mabel without holding back.
Another lady spoke to Grace Yowell, "Grace, you should really be more discerning with the friends you make. Not just anyone can enter our circle. Be careful not to be used by someone."
Grace Yowell smiled but said nothing, nor did she come to Mabel Quinn’s defense.
Mabel felt a pang in her heart. Grace’s attitude left her a bit uncomfortable, after all, Grace was the one who invited her to this charity event, yet at this moment, she didn’t even utter a word in her defense.
"Grace, I think I’ll leave first," Mabel said.
"Leaving so soon? Mabel, aren’t you going to stay longer? I could introduce you to some more people." Grace replied.
But her words only solidified in those ladies’ minds that Mabel was trying to break into their circle. Someone held Grace back and said, "Grace, if she wants to leave, let her go. Not just any Tom, Dick, or Harry can enter here."
