CHAPTER 58: THE LETTER

"Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh,"

Yuan’s scream of excitement had Aaliyah’s eyes opening with a startle, just as her friend jumped into the room and climbed Aaliyah, sitting on her leg.

There was a look of awe written all over Yuan’s face as she waved a piece of envelope all over Aaliyah’s eyes that were now fully awake.

"Oh my God! Did you have to scream so loud?" Aaliyah groaned, looking up at her friend and wondering what the envelope and excitement were all about.

"You got a letter, Aaliyah! A letter from Olympia!!" Yuan exclaimed, waving the envelope even more all over Aaliyah’s face fervently, urging her to take a closer look.

"Olympia?" Aaliyah asked bluntly, her brain trying to process what the fuss was all about. She was confused and deprived of sleep, wishing her friend would climb off her so she could get back to sleep, "What are you talking about?"

A second later, Aaliyah caught sight of the Emblem that had been used to seal the paper, being the face of a wolf. That kind of emblem only represented Olympia, the most prestigious school this world has ever seen.

The School of mystery and learning was only meant for the chosen ones. Those who had what it took to take on the various challenges the school had to throw at them, and with millions of applications from all over the world every day, only a handful of people were accepted.

The Very best.

The sleep vanished from Aaliyah’s eyes and her eyeballs almost fell off, "Olympia?! Oh my Goodness! Get off me!"

She hauled Yuan away and snatched the letter, staring closer at the emblem to make sure her eyes were not deceiving her. It felt like a daydream, only that she was still pinching herself and was not waking up.

Written behind the white envelope was a beautiful handwriting stating ’ To Aaliyah Chester ’

It was unbelievable.

"Is this really happening?"

"Just shut up and open it already!" Yuan burst out.

Aaliyah pulled up the seal and took out the letter that was inside. She unfolded the paper, took in a deep breath, and read out loud,

Dear Miss Chester,

You have been recognized among many others, possessing outstanding gifts and abilities that have made us decide to give you a chance. A chance to prove yourself and convince us why we should give you a scholarship to study here at Olympia. The phantom games is coming up in a week, and you and three others will participate in the activities. Mind you, the phantom games are not for the weak-minded. There will only be one winner... Olympia wishes you luck

Signed

~ Management.

Aaliyah’s face was scrunched up in displeasure, "I’m no longer interested," She scoffed and tossed the letter aside.

"Huh? What do you mean you’re no longer interested? You’ve been given a chance! You were recognized. Do you know what this means?" Yuan was visibly shaking.

"It means Olympia can go to hell!" Aaliyah rolled her eyes and threw up the covers to get up, "Why on earth would they claim they’ve recognized what I can do, but still decide to put my name in a competition before I’m allowed to attend Olympia? And of all activities, the phantom games? Only one winner? I’ll be up against witches or Vampires and the game itself is enough to kill someone. Or have you forgotten they’ve always been one or two deaths in every phantom game since the beginning?"

"But...!"

"Absolutely not. I will not risk my life just because of Olympia. I enjoy sitting at home and doing the little things to make some money. Going to Olympia has never bothered me,"

"Come on. I’m attending Olympia already, we could also be school besties," Yuan urged, giving Aaliyah her puppy eyes, "And you’ve got the potential to partake in the games and win. Why don’t you see what I see in you? Where is the Curiosity? Where is the adventure?"

"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Aaliyah headed to the bathroom and stepped inside.

"Think about it," Yuan cried from the room.

"No can do!" Aaliyah replied and closed the door.

The small mirror she faced reflected her image, and Aaliyah’s muscles clenched.

That sleep she was having before Yuan ruined it, Aaliyah knew she had been in a nightmare. One that was terrifying and unlike any other. A part of her was glad Yuan had woken her up, but another part of her would have wanted to see how the nightmare would end.

But the moment she had opened her eyes, Aaliyah had forgotten everything concerning the nightmare.

The only subtle detail she could remember was a pair of eyes. A pair of eyes that were lacking life, and the iris of the eyes were almost completely white, trying to blend with the other part of the eye.

It was crazy. What a strange memory she had about it.

As Aaliyah stepped out of the bathroom, She found Yuan fast asleep on her bed and smiled.

She and Yuan had grown up together. The two girls had found each other after their town had gotten raided by rogue Vampires and destroyed, leaving them to fend for themselves. Ten years have passed, and they now live here in this small town trying to make ends meet.

Her eyes found the letter sitting in the bedside drawer, and she thought about throwing it into the trash. Those people running the school and the person himself that had thought about sending her this letter were ridiculous.

In the world they lived in, the supernatural was at the top of the chain. Only a handful amount of humans knew about their existence, including her. But Aaliyah could not classify herself as a full human, given that she could see things that even witches could not see, and had sharper senses than a human.

But she wouldn’t compare them to that of a Vampire.

"What the hell were they thinking inviting me to the phantom games? I cannot compete with those creatures. Are they insane or what?!" Aaliyah murmured to herself

We are still going to watch the games next week," Yuan said, awake.

"I don’t want to,"

"I’m a Vampire, Aaliyah. I’ll drag you there with me," Yuan smirked.

"And I will hate you for the rest of my life!"

"You do know that the winner of the games not only gets a scholarship but will be provided everything he or she needs for the rest of their life, right?"

Aaliyah’s ear twitched in apprehension, "Everything?"
