Enchantment Of The Night
Chapter 73: Something Between Us.
CHAPTER 73: SOMETHING BETWEEN US.
Both girls looked at Blake.
"I’m not doing anything. Doesn’t it also surprise you that she survived without any powers? One can only conclude that she is hiding something," Bianca mentioned, explaining to Blake.
"It’s her business and her choice. Don’t be causing trouble on the first day of school," Blake glared at her.
"I’m not causing trouble. I’m just as curious as everyone else,"
"So what were you going to do? Force her if she refuses to say, right? Because it didn’t seem like you were going to be kind or gentle,"
Bianca opened her mouth to say something, then she shut it back instantly. Her lips worked, and her facial muscles clenched before she rolled her eyes arrogantly and walked away.
Aaliyah simply took her books and stood up to leave. Her mind was already occupied with something else, and it slipped her mind that Blake was still watching and waiting for her to say something.
He looked slightly pissed when she walked out without even acknowledging him.
Alone, Aaliyah’s thoughts overtook her present state of mind as she found her way to the library where she was supposed to meet with Yuan. The library was about a ten-minute walk from class, and the road was surprisingly not as busy as she thought.
That awful feeling of being watched hit her again, and she stopped her in tracks. This one was very different from the ones she’d been getting all day from Olympians, and she had a feeling she knew who owned his heavy gaze.
Was he looking after her? Keeping a lookout? He did seem very worried when she said she wasn’t going to leave Olympia.
A few Olympians walked past her, their gazes falling and rising with her as they did. The one in the middle was holding a newspaper, which had Liya recalling what Yuan told her about the press organization in this school...and the heads-up that she was going to be one of the faces in this week’s release.
"Olympia gave her a letter. Maybe they made a mistake," One of them whispered to themselves.
Aaliyah could hear everything without even trying.
"Professor Kayne and Mistake have never appeared in the same sentence. Maybe...maybe she managed to meet with him and miraculously convinced him to give her a shot,"
"Let’s assume that was what happened. How will you explain how she survived the Phantom games? Another miracle? I don’t believe that,"
"Let’s ask the other three. She must have cheated!"
"I know Bianca and she refuses to let anyone know anything. I have never spoken to Blake Fang before and the skinny one is still recovering in the school medical center!"
"She’s right behind us. Let’s ask her,"
Two of them peeked to look at her, and she met their gaze with a hard glare, warning them not to even think about it.
"No one mentioned anything of her being scary!"
"She’s human! Humans are anything but scary,"
Aaliyah had heard enough. She stopped walking and let them keep moving forward to put a lot of distance between them and stop hearing them talk about her. But then again, everyone was thinking the same thing about her.
That she cheated.
The Man’s gaze deepened to an extent she could not handle as if he was trying to pierce through her skin and look into her soul. Her breath quickened.
At this point, she wouldn’t make it to the library without fainting.
"Professor," She called, whirling around to the empty road, "Take it easy. My head already hurts enough from today’s classes,"
Did she just say that? Her eyes broadened. She had just spoken to him casually without any honorifics, and she panicked and turned around to jump into a run.
A sharp intake of breath accompanied her movements, Halting her steps. Aaliyah gasped as she ran into a wall that wasn’t there before, tripping on her foot as she almost fell backward.
But it was no wall.
His scent caught her nose, and she swallowed tightly.
"Chester," He said.
"Pro... professor," She stammered.
"Chester," He repeated, this time a little deeper.
Aaliyah bit her lips, not daring to look into his eyes, "Hm?"
"The Mouth on you," He murmured.
"I didn’t...it wasn’t...," She cursed at herself, "I’m going to the library,"
"That much is obvious,"
"And you were making me uncomfortable. Forgive my choice of words, sir,"
"You cannot blame me for following you. I wouldn’t if I could stop myself,"
She finally looked into his fiery eyes, "What do you mean, professor?"
"You feel it too, don’t you?" He asked, taking a step closer to her. Aaliyah held her books tighter against her chest, her pulse quickening.
"Feel what?" She whispered, her voice slowly disappearing.
Oh no.
"There is something between us,"
Her mouth almost dropped to the ground. What the hell was he saying? Why was he saying it out loud? These were things she had only thought of, but hearing it from the other party that was involved was like setting her body on fire.
"Huh?"
"A strange pull. Stronger than a mere attraction,"
Her lips parted involuntarily, and her voice failed her. She couldn’t even form a simple sentence in her head.
"I did my research because I thought it was some kind of rare or forbidden spell that had struck me. But the only thing I was able to find that I thought would come close to this feeling was... wrong. There’s no spell on either of us. What I feel...is completely natural,"
Don’t say it. Don’t say it. Don’t say it.
"And I’m very good at reading body language...and judging based on the noises a person’s internals make,"
Aaliyah was about to explode, and so was her heart.
"Both you and I, are...,"
And that was it. Aaliyah’s feet moved faster than she could think, and she broke into a run.
She had never run so fast in her life, not even when the maze had been exploding and she was the last to enter the portal.
Meanwhile, Alastair was glued to his spot. Her books were all over the ground and she was screaming as she ran away.
What did she think he was going to say?
