CHAPTER 136: CHAPTER 136: THAT MAN COULD NEVER BE CLARA STERLING’S HUSBAND

Evan Grant and Mandy Lynn, as the young master and daughter of the presidents of the Sheffield Group’s partner company, were also invited to the anniversary celebration.

Mandy Lynn was like Evan’s shadow, following him everywhere he went, constantly trying to start a conversation with him.

"I heard Silas Sheffield, the president of the Sheffield Group, is attending this anniversary celebration. He usually skips these, but for some reason, he’s showing up this year," Mandy Lynn said to Evan.

"Hmm."

Evan responded indifferently, but Mandy wasn’t bothered.

"They say Silas Sheffield is extremely handsome. I’ve never seen him. Have you?"

Without even lifting an eyelid, Evan replied just as coolly, "I’ve seen him once."

Evan once saw Silas Sheffield at a business cocktail party.

He indeed lived up to the rumors — impressive and exceptionally handsome.

His family’s elder often compared Silas Sheffield to the Grant Family’s younger generation, praising how outstanding Silas was and urging them to emulate him.

Evan took his elder’s words in one ear and out the other, never taking them seriously.

He had no interest in business affairs. He just wanted to be a carefree rich playboy, enjoying life, eating, drinking, and womanizing.

The Grant Family elder had two sons and two daughters, with Evan’s father being the eldest.

Evan also had an older brother named Nicholas Grant.

Nicholas was groomed from a young age to be the future successor, receiving elite education under strict expectations from Mr. and Mrs. Grant.

In contrast, Evan was essentially allowed to just do his own thing.

Mr. and Mrs. Grant never expected him to achieve anything significant, as long as he didn’t break the law, he was free to do as he pleased.

With no ambition himself, Evan was only interested in leisure, comfortably enjoying the lifestyle of a second-generation rich heir.

This anniversary celebration was something he attended alongside his brother Nicholas.

While Nicholas was busy networking with various CEOs, Evan only cared about when Anabelle Spencer’s colleague would come.

Since seeing Clara Sterling at Anabelle’s birthday party, Evan could not forget her.

He was here today just to catch another glimpse of Clara Sterling.

Mandy asked again, "So who do you think is better looking, Silas Sheffield or you?"

"Are you bored?" Evan replied impatiently. "Don’t you have any friends of your own? Sticking to me like glue all day, I’m really annoyed."

Mandy pouted, "Don’t be mean. I just like sticking around you. Want to grab a drink after the celebration?"

"No time."

Evan scanned the hall.

No sign of Clara Sterling, but he spotted Anabelle Spencer.

Evan walked over to Anabelle Spencer.

"Anabelle, where’s your gorgeous colleague?"

Anabelle replied, annoyed, "She’s married. Her husband is taller, more handsome, and richer than you. Give up."

"I don’t believe it."

Evan grinned.

"Taller, more handsome, and richer than me? So far, I only know one person who meets all three, and that person definitely isn’t Clara Sterling’s husband."

Anabelle chuckled, "And who might that be?"

"Silas Sheffield."

Lisa Holloway nearly burst into laughter nearby.

Clara’s husband was indeed Silas Sheffield.

Anabelle, impatient, said, "Alright, alright, what do you care who her husband is? You don’t stand a chance anyway."

Mandy’s face darkened upon hearing Evan inquire about Clara Sterling again, reminded of the last auction incident.

Mandy asked, "Where’s your colleague Clara Sterling? Why didn’t she come today?"

"She resigned," Anabelle said with a sly smile at Mandy. "Why are you interested in her?"

Mandy sneered.

"At the last auction, she snatched the necklace I wanted. Just an employee acting for her boss, arrogantly thinking she’s a wealthy woman."

With that, Anabelle instantly understood.

So the one who outbid Mandy at the auction was Clara.

She recalled how furious Mandy was, posting five angry WeChat statuses.

Anabelle didn’t attend the auction, not realizing it was Clara who snagged the necklace, but she thought whoever did it pulled a great move.

Knowing now that it was Clara only made Anabelle feel more satisfied.

If Clara taking the necklace Mandy wanted infuriated her so much,

finding out Clara was Silas Sheffield’s wife, the president’s wife of the Sheffield Group, might just drive Mandy into a rage-induced shock.

The thought made Anabelle burst into laughter. "Pfft—"

"What’s so funny?" Mandy looked at her in suspicion.

Anabelle: "Hahaha... Oh, nothing, just remembered a really funny joke... Hahaha..."

Mandy rolled her eyes inwardly, muttering "crazy."

Evan and Mandy didn’t understand what Anabelle was laughing about, but Lisa did.

She also laughed, "I know what joke you’re thinking of, and I agree, it’s hilarious, hahaha..."

Evan asked, "She’s coming today, right?"

"No," Anabelle said, suppressing her laughter, coldly, "She already resigned."

"Resigned? Why?" Evan frowned.

"What’s it to you? She doesn’t even know you," Anabelle couldn’t help but roll her eyes.

"Because she seduced her boss and didn’t have the face to stay," Diana Dawson’s voice suddenly emerged.

With that, Diana Dawson and Jolyn Lowell walked over.

Following them was a man, Richard Rhodes, the one previously caught gossiping about Clara Sterling in the company kitchen with Diana and Jolyn.

Anabelle sneered, "You must be joking; President Hawthorne personally admitted he likes Clara. Yet here you are slinging rumors. Is it because you can’t have the man who fancies Clara that you harbor such malice towards her?"

"Hah, President Hawthorne only said that to smooth things over for Clara," Diana scoffed. "President Hawthorne is a good person for helping her; did you really believe it? Are you out of your mind?"

Jolyn chimed in, "Yeah, I think President Hawthorne’s words didn’t sound heartfelt either. He didn’t treat Clara Sterling any differently."

Richard added, "If President Hawthorne really liked Clara Sterling, she wouldn’t have resigned with him backing her up."

"Who’s this President Hawthorne they’re talking about?" Evan asked Anabelle.

"Mind your own business," Anabelle replied, never showing Evan, the carefree second-generation heir, a hint of friendliness.

Tired of dealing with everyone, Anabelle looped her arm through Lisa’s, "Lisa, let’s go."

Anabelle and Lisa left, and Diana remarked, "President Hawthorne is our department director, Clara Sterling’s boss. During the last Company’s week of love, Clara made a move on President Hawthorne, got rejected, then resigned out of shame."

Jolyn: "Yes, I’ll vouch that it’s true."

Hearing them, Mandy sarcastically said to Evan, "Heh, you’ve got great taste, falling for a woman like that."
