CHAPTER 148: CHAPTER 148: IS HE ABOUT TO MENTION DIVORCE NEXT?

Clara received a call from Silas Sheffield while she was sitting on a bench by the street, zoning out.

She hadn’t had the mood to eat anything all day.

It was already after nine o’clock at night, and Silas Sheffield hadn’t contacted her for over ten hours.

The rumors online were still brewing; she was already somewhat numb, without the energy to argue.

Now, her mind was filled with thoughts of Silas Sheffield planning to divorce her.

She slumped back on the bench, looking up slightly at the boundless night sky; her beautiful eyes were at this moment like a stagnant pool, devoid of any vitality.

Just then, her phone rang in her pocket.

It was the ringtone dedicated to Silas Sheffield.

Clara’s gaze trembled.

She had been waiting for the ringtone all day, and now that it was finally ringing, she dared not answer.

She was afraid Silas Sheffield was calling to talk about divorce...

The ringtone rang for a while and automatically stopped.

Clara took a deep breath, anxiety and nervousness spreading in her heart.

If he really proposed a divorce, what should she do...

The phone rang for the second time.

Clara hesitated for a moment, then moved her numb fingers and answered as if accepting fate.

"Hello." As she opened her mouth, she was startled by her own voice.

Having not had a drop of water all day and having just cried, her voice was a bit hoarse.

Silas Sheffield paused, the words he originally intended to say now stuck in his throat upon hearing her hoarse voice.

His tone was filled with grief, "Why is your voice like this, did you cry?"

Clara lightly responded, "Mm," clenching the phone tightly with her slender fingers, unrest building within.

Is his next sentence going to be about divorce.

"Did you eat properly today?" Silas Sheffield gently asked her again.

Clara was slightly stunned, somewhat bewildered; why was he only asking about irrelevant matters?

She pursed her lips without answering.

This morning, she had just gotten out of bed and hadn’t managed to go downstairs before receiving a call from her friend, alerting her that her photos with Julian Hawthorne were trending.

After seeing the rumors on the trending list, how could she possibly have the appetite to eat?

The entire day, she’d been muddleheaded, constantly waiting for his message, for his call.

Every minute and second stretched endlessly.

The longer Silas Sheffield ignored her, the stronger the anxiety in her heart grew.

In such distress and extreme tension, one couldn’t feel hunger.

Seeing Clara not answering, Silas Sheffield knew she hadn’t eaten properly that day.

The man sighed silently, simultaneously feeling heartache and frustration.

"Even with the biggest issue, you have to eat well." His tone held a sense of helplessness.

Clara remained silent.

"You haven’t seen the note I left for you, have you?"

Clara was taken aback, "What note?"

Silas Sheffield figured she hadn’t seen it.

He calmly explained, "I went on a business trip to Arctica; I left in a hurry this morning and left a note for you on the dining table. If you had gone downstairs for breakfast obediently, you’d have seen it. I’ve been on a plane for twelve hours with my phone turned off."

"..." Clara was momentarily speechless.

So he wasn’t giving her the cold shoulder; he was on a plane.

Thank goodness.

"And you..." Clara pressed her lips, "Did you see the comments online?"

"I saw them." Silas Sheffield’s voice was gentle and steady, like a soothing balm, "Don’t worry, I’ve already issued a clarification statement, and the trends have been taken down. I’ll find out who leaked the information."

Clara’s eyes heated up, suddenly feeling like crying.

How could he be so good.

Clearly, this matter could bring negative impacts, even affecting the Sheffield Group’s stock market value.

Yet he didn’t utter a single blame, nor did he question; he only cared about whether she had eaten properly and issued a clarification statement himself to handle the issue.

"I’m sorry, I should’ve come clean last night. If I had told you earlier that I met Julian Hawthorne yesterday, none of this would have happened."

Clara’s voice carried a sob.

The man felt a pang of sympathy.

"Don’t cry." He coaxed her softly, "I already knew last night, it was my poor handling."

"You knew?" Clara sniffled, surprised, "Is the reason you were in a bad mood and smoking last night because I met Julian Hawthorne?"

"Mm." Silas Sheffield admitted.

"Last night, a stranger sent me a photo, the one trending online with you and him having coffee. At that time, my emotions were affected, and I didn’t investigate who sent the photo; it was my oversight. If I had investigated last night and bought the photo from the media, none of this would have happened."

He was still finding faults with himself.

Clara’s eyes suddenly welled up with tears, emotions gushing like a deluge breaking the dam.

"Silas Sheffield." She softly called his name.

"Mm." The man responded gently.

"I love you."

She said these three words softly, yet with utmost sincerity, seemingly carrying immense weight, heavy beyond measure.

On the other end, it was very quiet, even Silas Sheffield’s breathing seemed to have vanished.

Clara quietly waited for his response.

After a moment, she heard the man’s deep, resonant voice, each word enunciated clearly, "I love you too."

...

Silas Sheffield had taken a twelve-hour flight, arriving at the hotel in a weather-worn state.

"Shorten the trip; change the return flight to three days later."

"Three days?" Zachary Lynch couldn’t help but voice his surprise.

Silas Sheffield glanced at him sideways, his gaze icy.

Zachary Lynch instantly straightened up, replying earnestly, "Alright, President Sheffield, I’ll take care of it immediately."

Wow, he originally planned to cut a week’s trip in half directly.

The business conference was scheduled for the afternoon the next day.

The matters to be discussed were significant and complex, so the originally planned meeting time was set for the next two days.

If he were to return in three days, would the planned project talks with Info-Link Corp still proceed?

Minutes later, Zachary Lynch had rescheduled the flight.

"President Sheffield, I’ve changed the flight to eight o’clock in the morning three days later; about the project with Info-Link..."

Silas Sheffield replied evenly, "As planned."

"Understood, President Sheffield."

This means Silas Sheffield plans to finalize the originally five-day project within one day.

Zachary Lynch certainly knew why Silas Sheffield was doing this.

President Sheffield is indeed going all out for his wife.

...

A little past one in the morning.

Clara was at the airport exit to meet Sophie Sheffield.

"Sweetie, are you okay?" Sophie Sheffield came up to Clara with a big hug.

Clara returned the hug.

"I just found out Silas went on a business trip to Arctica. Knowing he wasn’t intentionally neglecting me makes me feel much better."

"I told you, my brother loves you so much. How could he give you the cold shoulder? Luckily, he was just on a business trip. Did you see the statement he issued?"

Clara nodded, "Mm, I saw it."

After finishing the call with Silas Sheffield, she saw the clarification statement he issued.
