CHAPTER 49: CHAPTER 49: I WANT TO GO ON FIELD DUTY

"Name."

"Li Wei."

"Age."

"24 years old."

"What’s the report about?"

"I suspect someone has added something to the Steamed Buns."

In an office, two policemen sat on chairs questioning and taking notes, while across from them sat Li Wei, behaving honestly.

After listening to Li Wei, the two policemen exchanged glances. The older one immediately asked, "Did you see anything?"

Li Wei shook his head.

"Then how are you sure there’s something added inside?"

Li Wei spoke honestly, "I watched the promotional video put out by the police before, saying that the biggest feature of this substance is that it’s addictive. After eating one of those Steamed Buns, I felt its taste was stuck in my heart; if I miss a meal, it feels like something is missing in life."

Officer Wu nodded and said, "The way you put it really sounds like it. Okay, Xiao Zhong, take him to the testing department to have a look."

The young policeman closed his notebook and replied, "Okay, Master."

Li Wei peeked around as he followed Officer Zhong, who chatted casually with him while leading the way, "Have you eaten those Steamed Buns these days?"

Li Wei replied, "Yes, Officer, the first time was the day before yesterday, and I also ate them yesterday and today."

Officer Zhong chuckled, "Don’t call me Officer, we’re of the same age. I mean, you’ve already suspected something’s added to the Steamed Buns, and yet you ate it again today?"

Li Wei embarrassedly scratched his head, "I didn’t want to, but the bun’s taste, texture, and appearance are too tempting for me. I really couldn’t resist."

Officer Zhong frowned slightly, wondering if there really was something added to the Steamed Bun?

Otherwise, how could a bun taste this good?

The testing department was in another building of the police station, a five-minute walk away.

Besides giving the remaining three Steamed Buns to the testing department, Li Wei also provided some blood, hair, and urine upon staff request.

"Since it’s been two days since you ate, if there was something added, we could detect the relevant components in your hair and urine."

After explaining, Officer Zhong smiled and patted Li Wei’s shoulder, "Regardless of whether your report is accurate, your attitude is commendable. If everyone were as vigilant as you, I believe our country would become better and better."

Li Wei felt a bit embarrassed by the praise, "It’s all thanks to the good education from officers like you."

The testing speed was remarkably fast, usually done in about half an hour, especially for important tasks like substance testing, which were prioritized.

After chatting for a short while, the testing personnel came out with a report and handed it to Officer Zhong: "According to the test results of hair, blood, and urine, the Steamed Bun is completely normal. The bun itself tested clean, not only without additives but extraordinarily clean; we only found regular spices in it, not even common flavor enhancers used by vendors."

After saying this, the tester jokingly added, "Honestly, this Steamed Bun is quite something. I’ve seen so much in my long career, but I almost couldn’t resist tasting this bun myself during the test. If you bump into it during field work, please bring some back for me to taste."

Officer Zhong, smiling with tears in his eyes, thanked the tester and led Li Wei back to the record room.

Officer Zhong reported, "Master, the testing department examined the informant’s hair, blood, and Steamed Buns he brought, and all results were negative."

Officer Wu nodded, "That’s good, seems it was a false alarm."

After saying this, he patted Li Wei’s shoulder encouragingly, "Even though it was a false alarm, your spirit is commendable. If similar incidents happen in the future, we hope you’ll bravely report them to the police station."

After advising Officer Zhong, he went out to get busy, while Officer Zhong escorted Li Wei out of the police station.

While sending Li Wei off, Officer Zhong stealthily asked Li Wei, "Hey brother, when are those Steamed Buns usually sold?"

Li Wei was puzzled for a moment then replied, "Usually around 5 am. When I go out at 6 am, they’re available. Don’t go too late, they sell too well, and by around 8 am, they’re usually sold out, during the afternoon, they’re sold around 4 pm and by 7 pm they’re about sold out too. Are you planning to buy some to taste, Officer Zhong?"

Officer Zhong laughed heartily, "Ah... yes, yes yes, I plan to buy some to taste. I’m quite curious about how good they are that got you hooked."

Hearing this, Li Wei got excited instantly, "I tell you, those Steamed Buns are really unique; their fluffy texture, delicious taste, it’s really hard to describe with words. If you want to try them, I recommend going in the afternoon. Although the morning and afternoon ones are both good, the evening ones seem even better."

Officer Zhong memorized it and then sent Li Wei off.

The real reason Officer Zhong asked in detail wasn’t because he wanted to taste them himself.

But because the tester just expressed interest in trying them.

Nothing more than wanting to court someone.

Since graduating from police academy, Officer Zhong, who’s always been single, felt as if his heart was grabbed whenever he saw the lady in the testing department.

He wanted to court but was afraid, and if he didn’t, he felt itchy inside, never finding a good opportunity. This Steamed Bun was a godsend opportunity, wasn’t it?

He rushed excitedly back to the office and said to Officer Wu, engrossed in a file, "Master, I want to go out on field duty to Shibapan this afternoon, to see the situation there."

Officer Wu nodded, "Go ahead, if you see those Steamed Buns, bring some back for me. I tell you, those buns are something, the smell lingers once passed under my nose."

...

...

Wang Fan naturally didn’t know that his Steamed Buns had been tested by the police.

But even if he did, he wouldn’t feel any psychological pressure; he knew clear as day whether he added anything or not, unafraid of investigation.

Once an early day ended, Wang Fan drove to the vegetable market again.

The seafood store owner greeted Wang Fan warmly, "Young brother, it’s been a while since you came; today these shrimp are awesome, about 15 pieces per pound, two pounds for 50 bucks, three pounds for 70, want to try some?"

Wang Fan nodded and entered the seafood store, the oxygen pump continuously bubbling in the tank holding the shrimp, some were swimming, some bouncing around.

The owner introduced, "It’s all fresh stuff, just recently shut off from oxygen, guaranteed freshness."

With the system’s support, Wang Fan automatically filtered the owner’s words.

Based on system experience, they indeed were recently cut off from oxygen.

And with his Listening to the Wind and Discriminating the Flavor, he didn’t smell any spoilage.

"Then pack me up 10 pounds."
