Forbidden Affair with My Mafia Stepbrother R18
Chapter 26: Moving In with Him
CHAPTER 26: MOVING IN WITH HIM
"It’s nothing. We just wanted to welcome you to the family and also to the business. Honestly, we’ve never had a woman in our family for a very long time, so we’re very excited to have you," another man said before winking at me.
"Oh, I see," I murmured, not quite understanding what he was trying to get at. It also didn’t seem to make sense that their family business didn’t have any women working in it because, as far as I was aware, the large company employed both men and women.
"If you want to help out with the business, don’t hesitate to let us know. We’ll make sure to find a position suitable for you," another man added.
I didn’t think that I would be scouted for work when I came to my mother’s wedding, but that seemed to be how things were playing out for me. Their seemingly aggressive invitation made me feel quite uncomfortable, but I wasn’t sure how to get myself out of that situation without appearing impolite. I was more concerned about what they would think of my mother if I did something to offend them, given that we had just joined their family.
While I was wondering what to do and what to say, I felt someone take hold of my right arm.
"There you are, Abigail," I heard a familiar voice and looked up to find Raphael standing right next to me. I was quite shocked at his unexpected and sudden appearance, but before I could say anything, Raphael had turned his attention to the three men.
"Is there something that you need from my sister?" he asked with a cold edge to his voice, which I found to be quite disturbing and frightening at the same time.
The three men seemed visibly disturbed at Raphael’s sudden appearance. Unlike the way they talked smoothly and confidently before, the three of them started stuttering as they came up with various excuses all at the same time. I actually found the complete U-turn of their attitude quite amusing.
"It’s nothing, really. We were just asking if she was interested in the business," one of the men managed to string his words together to make a sentence, although he stuttered quite a lot along the way.
"What did you tell her about the business?" Raphael asked coldly as he stared menacingly at the three men.
The atmosphere suddenly felt threatening and cold as the three men struggled under Raphael’s intense stare.
"Nothing," they all insisted at the same time. After that, the three of them made quick excuses before quickly walking away.
"Did they say something strange to you?" Raphael asked as he turned his attention to me.
"No, not really," I replied, while wondering who those three men were exactly.
“They’re my cousins. Pay them no mind,” Raphael answered my unasked question as if he could see that question written all over my face.
“Right...” I murmured.
"Didn’t I tell you not to leave my side?" Raphael asked, as if he was scolding a misbehaving child.
"You did, but that doesn’t mean that I have to do exactly what you tell me to. Plus, you were so engaged in conversation that you didn’t even mind me leaving," I pointed out in my own defense.
"Don’t leave my side and don’t talk to strangers," Raphael instructed sternly.
I could feel that he wasn’t in the greatest of moods and that picking a fight with him wasn’t going to lead to anything great. After letting out a resigned sigh, I simply nodded my head in agreement. Thankfully, after that, the wedding ended smoothly without any notable event, and we returned back together to Bennett’s mansion.
**A few days later**
I wasn’t sure if Bennett was eager to have us move into his mansion or if he was just a very generous man and wanted to offer us ample help, but within a day, everything that we wanted to move from our old house was packed and shipped over to Bennett’s mansion.
Just like that, we completely moved to live with Bennett and Raphael as if we were a complete family. I was given a bedroom with an adjoining living room that was even more spacious and luxuriously decorated than the room that I stayed in on my first night as a guest in the mansion. I would have enjoyed this upgrade and environment had I not been so worried about dealing with Raphael and also about putting my career on hold.
I had not turned up to work, and after much consideration, I finally made the decision to quit my job completely. The hardest part was writing my resignation email while not referring to the honest reason behind my sudden resignation. I sat alone in my living room while I struggled to compose my resignation letter. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door and I immediately called out to find out who it was.
"Who is it?" I called out just loud enough for the other person to hear me.
"It’s me," my mother’s familiar voice replied.
I shut my laptop quickly to hide what I was doing as if I was a guilty child before heading over to the door and opening it for her. My mother walked in gingerly as she looked around my living room before taking her seat on the sofa.
"How are you liking it here? Is everything comfortable?" She asked before smiling at me.
If there was anything that made me uncomfortable, it had nothing to do with the room that I was given.
“Of course, this place is actually too luxurious that I’m finding it a little hard to adapt to," I replied quite honestly.
"I totally agree. I get what you’re saying," my mother said in agreement with an eager nod of her head.
Given that it was quite late at night, I was certain that my mother wouldn’t pay me a visit simply to ask me how I was doing. After a moment of silence, my mother heaved a loud sigh before turning to face me directly.
"Abby, you broke up with Sam, didn’t you?" My mother asked before her face contorted with intense emotions.
