CHAPTER 183: GHOST AND HER MEMORIES (1)

"I’ll tell you everything I’ve remembered recently." Ghost says with a bit of nervousness in her voice.

"I appreciate you sharing it with us either way." I reply with a genuine tone.

(Year 2081. Before the Collapse.) Ghost’s View.

It was the year 2081, that much was obvious by the calendar across the room from me. I was wearing some sort of military uniform with a number on my suit. 021.

A girl was sitting at a table across the room from me with a shield by her feet.

She’s wearing a uniform similar to mine but has a half mask covering her face, green eyes, and a hood over her head. It was safe to assume that she was a teammate of mine.

Her patch was 001. We were working together on some sort of experimental unit.

"021, 001. I need you both to get out on some patrols." A man said from a speaker in the room.

The government was still testing out our capabilities in the field since cyborgs were going to replace a lot of the military units in the city.

I didn’t really understand it much at the time since it was just embedded within me.

"Seems we’ll be working the streets of Kairox, how exciting." 001 said with a sarcastic tone.

"A job is a job. Let’s just get our gear together and get going." I replied while picking up a rifle.

I picked up a pretty advanced piece of steel for the field, a special assault rifle with netwire modifications. Tracking capabilities that make it easy to wipe out targets without a problem.

My uniform had some special plates within to help with any damage from bullets.

"I’m ready to go whenever you are." 001 said with a laid back tone.

"Me too." I replied.

We left the barracks after that and made our way for one of the trucks. A few other squad members were inside but they’d be going to a completely different part of the city.

Each one has a different number on their patch with a different symbol on their shoulders. Some specifically symbolized sniper teams, medical teams, or close quarter teams.

Ours symbolized a patrol team so we had to wander through some of the combat heavy streets.

Kairox has a lot of gang violence within the city so it was common for the government to eventually send patrol teams. I didn’t mind going into the streets like this since we were already combat ready.

"We’re here. Patrol team out." The driver instructed.

We hopped out of the truck without wasting any time and I pulled my rifle off of my back. The streets were quiet for the moment but you never know what to expect.

We got dropped off on 7th Street, one of the deadliest streets for gang fights to occur on. It was a lot quieter than expected though.

Usually somebody was fighting around here so it didn’t make any sense for it to be this quiet. So I gave a signal over to 001 for her to make her way around some of the buildings.

Of course I made my way up to one of the rooftops to see what I could see from up top.

The numbers always bothered me though, being referred to without a real name. I’m sure the others didn’t mind it but it really bothers me.

Having a name means we actually exist and aren’t just some pieces of metal roaming the streets. I don’t think we are just cyborgs and are actually allowed to feel human too.

So I took it upon myself to give us both names. Alysia and Rena. They were perfect names that suit both of us quite well.

Anyway, the streets were too quiet and I could see blood residue all over the pavement. Clearly the gang who ran this turf was dead.

"001 I think this place is empty. I’ll head a bit further into the territory to take a look." I said over the comm.

"Copy that." 001 responded.

I made my way across a few of the rooftops in search of any sort of activity from these gangs but it was completely silent. Not even a single gunshot was being fired.

Something I did notice around the blood was mana residue. The person who killed everyone here was using a mana infused weapon of some sort.

Mana was still quite new to the world at this point in time with very little knowledge about how to use it. The most common use for it was cybernetic modifications and steel modifications.

KRRRRZ- CRACK!!!! A loud shot went off in the distance. That was definitely a sniper shot, it means that 001 could possibly be hurt.

I quickly made my way back across the rooftops until I finally saw 001 shielding someone down below. The guy was definitely another gang member of some sort but they were being fired upon by some people.

They seem to be wearing robes with these hoods covering their faces.

At the time a big group that we encountered was known as the watchers, quite familiar now that I can remember it. They were a lot different back then.

I didn’t understand the reason for them attacking back then either, there was no clear reasoning for it at the time. Nobody needs any justification to kill in Kairox.

Eventually I made my way down to 001 and the mysterious guy. His sniper was definitely infused with mana by the looks of it.

I grabbed his shoulder to get his attention.

"You don’t seem to be a threat but I’m sure that you aren’t a good person either." I spoke with a serious tone.

"021 he’s with me. We’ve been pinned down by these watchers." 001 chimed in with a calm tone.

"I told you to just call me Alysia instead of that dreadful number. Just like I gave you the name Rena. It is a lot better than the numbers." I said with a bit of an irritated tone.

I never told her this before but now she knows.
