CHAPTER 19: CHAPTER 19: I HAVE A BAD TEMPER, DON’T MESS WITH ME
In this era, there’s not much in terms of entertainment activities.
Not every household can afford a color television.
The Fu Family can’t even bring themselves to install an electric light, living such a hard life; naturally, a TV, such high-end stuff, is out of the question.
Every evening, as soon as it gets dark, the elder Fu couple just light a kerosene lamp and sit in the house for a heart-to-heart conversation.
They’d chat about some things that happened in the village recently.
Just some trivial household gossip, like whose wife was caught having an affair with whom and got beaten up.
Or perhaps someone’s old hen in the house went missing, and so on.
Mundane matters can be talked about for half the night, just to pass the time.
As for how Jiang Xin, knows about these things?
It’s entirely due to the poor insulation of the old Fu house, making the original resident almost forced to listen daily to Fu Yu’s parents discussing these topics.
At first, the original resident found it quite novel, enjoying eavesdropping on the elder Fu couple’s conversations.
Later on, the original resident became utterly numb because she realized the elder couple kept talking about the same topics over and over, not even knowing how many times they’d repeated them.
As time went on, she just felt annoyed.
Jiang Xin tugged at the corner of her mouth, paused in her attempt to push open the Fu Family’s main door.
She thought expressionlessly, she might be about to go through what the original resident had experienced tonight.
This old house’s poor sound insulation is going to be a nuisance.
If she doesn’t rest well, her whole day tomorrow would probably be spent in a very irritable state.
She thought that when it’s time to rest, she’d go into the space and find a pair of earplugs to wear.
Cutting off external noises completely since she can’t stop others from talking, she’d just block her own ears, directly going for the root cause solution.
Jiang Xin took a deep breath and pushed open the gate to the Fu Family’s yard.
She thought she should find a flashlight; it’s pitch black in the yard, what if she trips?
This thought just popped into her mind.
Then, suddenly there was a movement inside the house.
It’s probably Mr. Fu, having heard the noise from the yard, and knowing someone is home, grabbed the kerosene lamp and came out to take a look.
When he saw Jiang Xin, noticed she was soaked, he was slightly stunned at first but didn’t ask anything.
Holding the kerosene lamp, he walked quickly towards Jiang Xin.
Since there’s some distance between the house and the yard, Mr. Fu thought to walk closer to provide some light for Jiang Xin.
So it would be easier to walk.
The atmosphere was tense because Jiang Xin and the elder Fu couple had just had a big fight at noon.
Facing each other now felt quite awkward.
Jiang Xin felt rather thankful to Mr. Fu for bringing some light in the darkness outside.
So she spoke:
"Thanks."
Then she quietly followed in Mr. Fu’s footsteps towards the house.
Mr. Fu is a simple and dull man, and walking together with his daughter-in-law, his mind was in turmoil.
He thought, since Jiang Xin had greeted him voluntarily, if he didn’t respond, wouldn’t it be too disrespectful to his daughter-in-law?
But just this morning, Jiang Xin had an argument with his wife.
This...
Mr. Fu’s face was full of hesitation.
After holding back for a long time, he finally managed to say:
"Back already?"
Jiang Xin stopped dead in her tracks upon hearing this.
She mechanically turned her head, hardly believing her ears. Did she hear it wrong?
She’d been walking for quite a while, and then Mr. Fu says "Back already?"
If it was right when he saw her at first, asking this would seem normal to Jiang Xin.
But they had been in the yard for a while now, almost at the house.
Mr. Fu suddenly saying that was somewhat amusing.
Jiang Xin looked at Mr. Fu, saw his nervous scratching hands, and understood instantly.
Mr. Fu was trying to make conversation with her.
Jiang Xin shook her head helplessly, simply responded with "Hmm."
After entering the house, Mr. Fu handed the kerosene lamp to Jiang Xin, suggesting she take it to light up her room too.
As a man, Mr. Fu naturally found it inconvenient to enter his daughter-in-law’s room.
On this point, he was very aware of the boundaries.
Jiang Xin took the lamp, using it to light up her room.
The dim light shed in the room had some use; at least it allowed one to see clearly within it.
After lighting up, Jiang Xin left her room, handed the lamp back to Mr. Fu, who was still in the main room.
Then, she just wanted to return to her room.
After all, she was still wearing wet clothes, and to avoid catching a cold, it was best to change quickly.
Considering the current world, the medical situation is quite worrying.
If she got sick, she’d be the one suffering.
Jiang Xin nodded toward Mr. Fu, indicating her intention to rest.
But before she could close the door, Mrs. Fu, having heard the commotion, also came out.
Seeing that Jiang Xin was soaked, Mrs. Fu frowned, her face full of displeasure:
"Didn’t I tell you to come back before dark? What time is it now?"
"It’s completely dark outside already; you might as well live outside!"
"If you have an accident at our house, my son will be blamed for being a wife-killer!"
Mrs. Fu said this with a face full of fear.
She repeated, wanting Jiang Xin to return home before dark, for her safety’s sake.
If it was dark and she wasn’t home, they, the old couple, would have to go out searching for her.
Both troublesome and tiring!
Mrs. Fu paused her lecturing and glanced sideways at Jiang Xin’s drenched appearance.
Her brow furrowed tightly, and the words she spoke remained as harsh as ever.
"Look at the state you’re in, anyone would think you went and washed in the river!"
"Looking like a wet hen, you look awful!"
"The stench on you makes the whole house smell weird, it’s terrible..."
She kept grumbling, with no nice words whatsoever.
There wasn’t a single word of concern.
Jiang Xin held back and held back, but ultimately couldn’t hold back any longer.
She raised her eyes and glared at Mrs. Fu.
Speaking coldly:
"What, you haven’t had enough lessons from this noon yet?"
"Want it again?"
"I said, as long as your son divorces me, I’ll move out right away."
"I honestly don’t want to stay in the Fu Family for even a minute."
"I have a bad temper and know a bit of martial arts; I suggest you don’t provoke me!"
Even a rabbit will bite when it’s cornered.
Let alone Jiang Xin, who had always been rebellious.
Jiang Xin glanced at the peach crisps and pork she was holding.
Decided not to give them to Mrs. Fu, she’d rather feed them to the dogs than give them to her!
