CHAPTER 40: CHAPTER 40: DISDAIN

Jiang Xin’s head was buzzing from all their chatter.

She always preferred quiet and didn’t like overly noisy environments.

So even today, she came out to shop for clothes wanting just a peaceful, solitary stroll.

Whenever she saw clothes she liked, she’d pay for them directly.

The service from the sales personnel in the Department Store was indeed enthusiastic, but for someone like her, who enjoys quiet, it was simply torture.

The salespeople were interrupting each other, all trying to expose each other’s shortcomings.

All in an effort to win over Jiang Xin, who might be a potential big client, to their own domain.

They even started arguing in their attempts to win Jiang Xin over.

Jiang Xin stood among a group of salespeople, utterly at a loss for what to do.

After all, it was the first time she’d encountered such a scene, and not only was she unaccustomed, but she also felt a tinge of annoyance.

Jiang Xin rubbed her forehead in resignation, wondering if sales personnel are always this enthusiastic in this day and age?

It was also her first visit, so she didn’t know what the situation here was like.

Maybe if it were someone else being treated like this, they’d feel warmly received and be happy?

Jiang Xin remained still, lost in silent contemplation.

She was certainly unaware of why these salespeople were so eager for her.

Judging from her attire, one could see clues suggesting her family conditions were rather favorable.

Because even in town, residents rarely dressed as stylishly as Jiang Xin.

Normally, clothing is more plain and old-fashioned.

Not to mention style; often, there’s not even a cut. Typically, it’s fabric from home, sewn by a tailor, or homemade.

Not only is the material coarse, the color is usually quite simple, with little embroidery, mostly blue.

Seeing Jiang Xin dressed in shiny, new clothing, with exquisite fabrics and bright colors, even those who mix in the Department Store selling garments often hadn’t seen clothes this beautiful.

The town’s residents generally come to buy clothes only for special occasions, like engagements or weddings.

On regular days, few are willing to part with such sums of money since the prices of goods in the Department Store are indeed not cheap.

One dress could easily cost twenty to thirty, equaling half a month’s wages for ordinary people, who would be reluctant to spend.

People in sales generally understand how to cater to different clients.

With a glance, Jiang Xin appeared to be someone not lacking money, so they naturally wanted to seize the opportunity and boost their own sales.

Of course, Jiang Xin understood none of this.

Her initial purpose in coming to the Department Store was merely to buy a couple of pairs of pants.

The store assistants started bickering with each other.

Jiang Xin found the situation tiring and headache-inducing.

She looked up and around, noticing many other customers leisurely wandering nearby.

She truly couldn’t comprehend why these salespeople were so focused on surrounding her.

Could it be because she appeared wealthy?

Jiang Xin pondered, estimating that these salespeople judged based on appearances; she spoke expressionlessly:

"Sorry, when I left the house today, I ended up wearing my colleague’s clothes because mine got dirty."

"I have to buy something from your store to change into, since these clothes are supposedly quite expensive. I’m worried about damaging or dirtying them and not being able to compensate."

"Since you’re all being so enthusiastic, could you recommend the cheapest clothes in your store to me?"

"I only have ten or eight bucks right now. Any price higher than that, I can’t afford!"

After Jiang Xin finished speaking, she looked up at those saleswomen who had been fiercely competing to win her attention moments ago.

Sure enough, everything turned out as Jiang Xin had anticipated.

Upon hearing her words, those initially very attentive salespeople changed their expressions faster than flipping through pages; from warm and enthusiastic, their demeanors turned scornful.

Some salespeople even slightly raised their heads in arrogance, sneering at her with an air of disdain.

Jiang Xin raised an eyebrow, amazed at how quickly these salespeople’s expressions changed, more genuine than even professional actors.

One salesperson, in disbelief, scanned Jiang Xin from head to toe, struggling to reconcile her appearance with being presumably poor.

Each of them was stunned by what Jiang Xin said.

No one responded to Jiang Xin’s question or introduced her to the cheapest clothes.

Jiang Xin casually opened her mouth again, asking the sales personnel:

"What’s the matter? Why aren’t any of you speaking? Weren’t you all very enthusiastic earlier?"

"I currently have only a few ten bucks on me; is anyone going to show me some inexpensive clothes?"

This time, as soon as Jiang Xin finished speaking, the startled salespeople snapped back to reality.

A few more experienced and older salespeople swiftly adjusted their expressions from disbelief.

Having heard Jiang Xin’s words, one sneered with disdain, saying to Jiang Xin:

"Dressed in such a befitting manner, we thought you were a wealthy princess, but it turns out you’re a bumpkin."

"Truly a waste of my time, thinking I could bag a big sale, and it turns out to be this?"

It was the salesperson who had shown the most enthusiasm in greeting Jiang Xin.

Upon hearing that Jiang Xin claimed to have no money, she was the quickest to turn her back.

Her tone was unfriendly, and after her comment, she turned and walked away, no longer serving Jiang Xin.

Jiang Xin remained expressionless, utterly indifferent.

She preferred if no one came to serve her, allowing her to shop quietly.

After one of the salespeople turned away, the others surrounding Jiang Xin also left one by one.

In the end, only a young girl, looking about twenty-ish, remained beside Jiang Xin.

She appeared honest and simple.

Seemingly new, likely not employed for long, just like the other salespeople, wearing a work uniform.
