Gamers Are Fierce
Chapter 242 - 241 Swamp
At the corner of the corridor, Dong Fengpo, his face an ashen hue, whispered, "This is the room."
The towering wooden door before them stood twice the height of a man, rustic and hefty, with a significant presence.
To the left and right, the round door handles made of brass were intricately carved with elaborate designs, faintly revealing what seemed to be the shape of some kind of deer.
Flanking the doorway, the walls were embedded with openwork iron brackets, which held two extinguished torches covered in dust and cobwebs.
It was somewhat reminiscent of the grand doors that appear during scene transitions in Conan cartoons.
"We're down to the embryo, the last of the abnormal organs."
Forest Cat gazed at the wooden door and said softly, "From the clues we've gathered thus far, it seems the ultimate goal of the Reindeer God in this script task is to resurrect himself. But why would it disperse these organs across different areas? Wouldn't it be more advantageous to keep them all together?"
Li Ang, who was examining the door handles, turned and said, "This could be because it needs to draw upon the power of the mansion itself. The wood inside this mansion, after all, has been transformed from the bodies of the Forest People and carries with it a negative Energy that can be used for nurturing."
"Hmm..."
Forest Cat frowned and said, "That makes sense. However, along our journey, aside from the abnormal organs, we haven't encountered much other danger. This is quite strange. If the Reindeer has merged with the mansion, why has it not attacked us directly? And now that we have cleared seven abnormal organs, can it still carry out the Ritual track properly?"
Stonemason said quietly, "We now have the heart, kidneys, intestines, torso, head, limbs, and lungs in our possession, leaving the Reindeer with only an embryo to manipulate. Perhaps, he only needs the embryo to achieve resurrection."
"Then we must hurry."
Ur Wunnian furrowed his brows and said, "What if he resurrects while we delay?"
Given his temperament, he would normally have stepped forward and pushed open the wooden door by now. But the near-death experience in the elevator shaft had left an indelibly deep impression, making him reluctant to act recklessly; he could only stand still and urge his teammates on with a gesture.
So far, I've found no further clues about the phantom woman we encountered earlier. According to the writings left by Lady Lesley, the descendants of the Lesley family would be drawn back to the mansion by the Reindeer's call. That woman could very well be a descendant of the Lesley family... Li Ang thought silently to himself.
He shook his head, choosing not to explain to his teammates, but simply waved his hand and said, "Thinking further on it is pointless; we'll have to face it head-on sooner or later. Let's go."
Li Ang extended his stone arm, braced against the timber door, and with a grating creak, a blast of cold air howled out from inside.
The space within the door was much larger than anyone had imagined, resembling a standard football field.
The floor near the doorway was paved with neatly arranged dark green square stones, cool to the touch and solid.
The walls were covered with fish-scale-like red ceramic bricks, precisely interlocked, uniform and orderly, giving the appearance of scales from the hide of some Giant Beast.
The sole source of light inside came from numerous faint blue cold-light lamps embedded in the ceiling. The lights twinkled on and off, illuminating the vast space like a splendid galaxy.
Upon closer inspection, the group realized that these so-called lights were actually a bunch of columnar Worms growing from the ceiling and hanging down straight. Those points of light were the luminescent bodies of the Worms dangling down.
The closer they got to the center of the hall, the dirtier the bluestone floor became, with a wild and unrecognizable variety of flowers, plants, and vines tenaciously sprouting from the ground, overturning the heavy bluestone tiles and growing rampantly.
The liquid sliding off the glowing Worms accumulated in shallow pools among the flowers, where mosquitoes, flies, and other insects flitted lightly above, only to be preyed upon by spiders and other hunters lurking in the grass.
This scene was like a vibrant, grassy marsh.
"What in the world is," Forest Cat felt a chill run from the top of her head to the soles of her feet, "that thing..."
Dozens of iron chains, thick as wrists, extended from various points on the wall, crossing the room and piercing through a huge, semi-transparent sphere, causing it to hover above the marsh.
The sphere measured over seven meters in diameter, covered with a layer of pale film, and its interior was filled with murky water.
By the dim light, everyone could clearly see a vague, huddled human shape floating inside the sphere, rising and falling with the movement of the water.
Light, pure and divine, radiated from inside the sphere, gentle and calm as if giving an embrace.
Everyone felt dizzy, and their facial expressions froze for a moment.
Li Ang smelled the fresh scent of grass and trees filling his nostrils, heard a rustling sound above his scalp, felt an itchiness on his skin, and his pores were writhing as though something was about to grow out of them.
Miss Chai, residing within his body, hastily shouted at him (inaudible to the outside world).
Li Ang snapped back to reality and saw moss slowly growing on the surface of Ur Wunnian's body, Dong Fengpo's hands and feet rapidly sprouting various colored mushrooms, and even on Stonemason's chest, a large pink flower had bloomed.
"Don't look at it!"
Forest Cat, whose body was devoid of anomalies, her expression changing drastically, yanked off an Obsidian Bracelet that was starting to mold and rot from her wrist. She then pulled out a necklace she had made herself—eight stones strung together with hemp rope—from her inventory, and slipped it over her own neck and those of her teammates, including Li Ang.
These rare-quality Stone Necklaces had the effect of protecting the spirit. Once activated, they would only last for fifteen minutes—a duration that would be further reduced if subjected to severe spiritual pollution.
In the real world, Forest Cat would have sold such functional equipment on the forum for at least a thousand Game Coins; she definitely wouldn't give them away for free.
But the humanoid shadow gestating within that sphere was too horrifying, forcing her to use items she could have sold for money on her teammates.
If her teammates perished inexplicably like that... she would only have the items left to accompany her in death.
As soon as the Stone Necklaces were placed around their necks, Ur Wunnian and the others' minds cleared instantly. They rapidly scraped off the various plants that had grown on their bodies, feeling a strong wave of retrospective fear.
They had nearly turned into plant-covered human vegetables.
Ur Wunnian's complexion turned ashen as he exclaimed with palpitations, "What the hell is this thing?"
"It's a weakened evil spirit attempting to revive, one that possesses a strand of Divinity," Forest Cat said without expression. "To gaze directly at a god is to incur divine punishment. These necklaces can only last for fifteen minutes. Hurry up."
