CHAPTER 37: CHAPTER 36: TURNS OUT WE’RE BOTH JUST HERE FOR FUN
"Boss, I tolerated going for a late-night snack with you, but why are you following me home?"
Wu Liang stood hesitantly at the door holding a key, unsure whether to unlock it, while the lavishly dressed woman beside him curiously surveyed the surroundings.
"I have nowhere to stay. After leaving the base yesterday and dealing with the Awakened at Heaven and Earth, I quietly moved in. But you set it on fire—where am I supposed to sleep?" the woman said, sounding entirely justified.
The key thing was, Wu Liang couldn’t find a reason to argue.
After all, the fact that he started the fire was undeniable.
It was already a blessing that this leader didn’t blame him and demand compensation.
Wait a minute... compensation?
Had he forgotten something?
"Oh right, the money I won at the casino! Damn, I haven’t cashed it out yet!" Wu Liang’s face suddenly turned pale.
Hearing this, the woman nonchalantly patted him on the shoulder and said, "Don’t worry, I transferred the money to your card after you left the casino!"
"Really? You’re my own sister! Which card?" Wu Liang was now starting to imagine living an economically free life.
But the woman’s next sentence shattered his dreams—
"Which card doesn’t matter. I’ve already handed it over to the department as compensation for you burning down that building. Otherwise, why do you think I’m not giving you any trouble?"
"?"
Thud—
Seeing Wu Liang kneeling on the ground in despair, head down as if regretting not hiding some money before leaving, the woman teased, "A man should never kneel for gold, and here you are, kneeling for money?"
"Yeah, a man shouldn’t bend for gold, yet here I am wondering if I can cash it out..."
Her comment brought a laugh out of the woman.
This kid is quite amusing.
In Heaven and Earth, he could resist all temptations and persistently investigate abnormal situations, yet once out, he appeared to be a money grubber.
Despite seemingly being an ordinary person, he was not afraid at all when facing a potential Awakened, and his confidence was almost visible to the naked eye. Still, he dutifully reported to work at a regular job.
A series of contradictions blended within him without creating a sense of discord.
This trip was definitely worth it!
"Alright, alright, just open the door and prepare a room for me to sleep in," she requested.
Ultimately, Wu Liang couldn’t refuse her and cleared out the guest room for her to stay the night.
During this process, he casually asked her name, but the woman just mysteriously replied, "Just call me Sister Yang."
Last name Yang? Then why not give the full name?
But Wu Liang didn’t care about this; a name is just a label, and to him, it didn’t matter.
Until he went to clock in at work the next day.
He realized then that the Sister Yang he just met might not be as simple as he thought—
There was a sudden interview notification at the TV station today, regarding a supernatural event outbreak at a slaughterhouse in Chengyang City.
The Official Awakened had already been notified to resolve the issue, and the station’s reporters needed to quickly get into position to provide live coverage from the event’s perimeter.
"Xiaowu, it’s your first time covering a supernatural event. Remember to stay far away and only go in for interviews after the Official Awakened confirms it’s safe! Life is the most important thing!" On the way there, Li Guoqiang repeatedly emphasized the importance of staying safe to Wu Liang.
Li had witnessed too many reporters get too close to supernatural events and pay the ultimate price.
He didn’t want Wu Liang, the new recruit, to end up the same way. The kid was only in his twenties, with a whole lifetime ahead of him.
He was determined to teach him the importance of staying safe!
......
Once they arrived at the slaughterhouse,
The plan was to first consult with the on-site staff for details and wait with them for the Awakened to handle the situation.
But Wu Liang, all carefree, just ran right up to the gate and started chatting with the Official Awakened who was getting ready to go in!
This nearly gave Li Guoqiang a heart attack!
So close! What if Wu Liang accidentally moved into the Fierce Ghost’s territory?
Thinking of this, Li Guoqiang hurriedly yelled for Wu Liang to come back.
But he couldn’t hear what Wu Liang and the Awakened were talking about, otherwise, he’d surely be even more shocked.
"Sister Yang? What are you doing here? Weren’t you still sleeping at home when I left?" Wu Liang was puzzled.
Indeed, the Official Awakened dealing with the supernatural event at the slaughterhouse turned out to be the woman who rested at his place last night!
"Oh, I was bored after waking up, so I hacked into the Official Awakened’s work group and happened to see He Zhan and the others mention a supernatural event here. Since I had nothing to do at home, I came out to get some exercise."
Her words nearly made Wu Liang’s brain crash.
"Hacked into the Official Awakened’s group? Aren’t you an Official Awakened yourself? Why did you need to hack in?" Wu Liang’s pupils widened in shock.
Could he be wrong?
Was she not part of the official team?
That didn’t seem right—since He Zhan didn’t stop her from handling the follow-up for Heaven and Earth, and didn’t even demand the unlimited Black Card back, Sister Yang must clearly be with the officials!
Noticing Wu Liang’s shock, Sister Yang just awkwardly scratched her cheek and explained, "Uh, because I wasn’t in the group before, since I didn’t have to handle such small tasks..."
Small tasks?
To her, a supernatural event was a minor issue?
Wu Liang was confused, but the woman offered no further explanation, merely patting his shoulder and reassuring him, "Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon after handling it, making sure He Zhan comes in vain!"
"Hey, hey, hey! What are you aiming for? Are you telling me He Zhan doesn’t know you’re here handling the supernatural event?!"
Sadly, Sister Yang had already turned and entered the slaughterhouse, completely ignoring Wu Liang’s loud complaints outside.
All he could do was back off and reunite with Li Guoqiang from afar.
"You reckless kid! How could you be so careless! Did you forget everything I told you in the car earlier?" Li Guoqiang reprimanded Wu Liang, sounding both critical and concerned. It was clear he was genuinely worried for Wu Liang’s safety.
Wu Liang didn’t argue, only chuckling and promising, "Next time, for sure."
While they talked, the two of them slowly retrieved the interview equipment from the car.
Just as they set up the gear and were about to question the staff in charge about the situation on site,
Li Guoqiang suddenly squinted towards the slaughterhouse gate in confusion, commenting, "Huh? How come that Awakened already came out again? And it looks like he’s talking?"
"Came out?" Wu Liang turned to look back.
Sure enough, only five minutes had passed.
Sister Yang was already back at the slaughterhouse entrance, holding a bunch of things and shouting something loudly.
The two frowned and listened closely.
A jubilant voice faintly echoed from the slaughterhouse entrance: "Wu Liang! It’s all sorted out! I even picked up some pig trotters! Let’s go home and make soup!"
Li Guoqiang: "Is she calling you?"
Wu Liang: "...No, you misheard."
What’s with Sister Yang being so conspicuous! How could she discuss stewing pig trotters with him in front of colleagues under these circumstances?
At least wait until after work!
Though, those pig trotters in her hand really did look pretty good...
