CHAPTER 190: CHAPTER 186: THE GOD OF DECAY (2)
Su’li sensed something and touched Mishka’s shoulder. The latter turned towards him, forcing a smile.
"I do not need to remind you not to do anything foolish, do I?" Su’li asked, smiling back at Mishka. "The entire future of the tribe depends on your actions. Please the God, and we shall sing your name. Dare sully his name, and his wrath shall burn everything."
Mishka didn’t reply, which irked Su’li, but before he could curse the child, his father came rushing to the rescue.
"Mishka understands what he has to do, don’t you, son?" he asked, and once again Mishka nodded.
Su’li kept staring at him for a minute before turning away.
"I will be waiting for you in the divine chariot," he said and left.
As soon as he did, Mishka’s mother broke into tears and hugged him. His father remained rooted to the spot, sighing as it was the only thing he could do.
"It’s all my fault..."
He broke down crying, cursing wildly at anything and everything.
The day the God arrived, there was a strange event. Everyone who saw the ball of fire crashing next to their settlement lost their eyes. Strange appendages appeared from where their eyes used to be.
Later, Su’li claimed they had been marked by the god. Everyone who was marked had to sacrifice a family member to the God of Decay.
Since Mishka’s father was on guard duty back then, he had left to check the ball of fire that descended from the heavens, only to get marked. Because of that, Mishka had to be sacrificed.
Mishka shook his head while getting dressed. It was no secret that his father was a weak man, both mentally and physically. Honestly, if there was someone he disliked after Su’li, it would be his own father.
After all, he was the one who forced him to stay silent while Su’li took his fiance away from him. Had it not been for his interference, he would already be married and possibly have a family of his own.
The only one he was worried about was his mother. She had suffered a lot, and having a weak excuse of a husband didn’t help her much.
"I’m leaving... and you," Mishka said, looking at his father. "Don’t forget your promise."
With that, he walked outside to see Su’li sitting comfortably inside the divine chariot. But seeing him made Mishka shake with rage because sitting on his lap was his former fiance.
She saw him too and quickly averted her gaze. She was still ashamed of the past, but Nikku didn’t have a choice in the matter. Had she gone against Su’li and something happened to the tribe, he would have killed her entire family.
"Come, chosen," Su’li said, giving him a taunting smile. "Have a seat, and we shall depart. I hope you don’t mind my having my wife over here. My duties as a shaman have left me ignoring my duty as a man. I was hoping to fulfill before we reach the temple."
The sound of Mishka grinding his teeth made Su’li’s guards react. They hoisted their divine weapons towards Mishka, but there was one thing they forgot.
"I am the chosen," Mishka said, eyeing them as if he were about to tear them in half. "You dare lift your weapons against me? Do you not fear God’s retribution if something happened to me?"
Su’li raised an eyebrow. He had not expected the boy to use his status as a sacrificial lamb in such a manner. After all, while the shaman held the absolute power, there was one occasion when he wasn’t the strongest.
That was while delivering the chosen to the temple.
In that moment, the Chosen was considered to be a part of the divine. In other words, Mishka was the closest thing to a god for the moment. By antagonizing him, they were antagonizing the god himself.
No one had ever thought of using the situation like that, but Mishka wasn’t going to let Su’li do as he pleased.
"Both of you, out now!" Mishka roared at the guards.
The guards eyed Su’li, who nodded, wondering what was going on inside Mishka’s mind. Once they were out, Mishka grabbed a stone and hit the guards’ heads with it.
"You brat—!"
Su’li jumped from his seat, only to be kicked back inside by Mishka.
"You’re my priest for the day," Mishka snarled, lifting the stone. "Till we get to the temple, you’re nothing but my servant. How dare you talk to me in such a tone?"
Su’li’s eyes widened as he realized why the boy was acting so calm before. He had already planned this out. Mishka smiled as Su’li’s expression turned sour.
While the shaman couldn’t be killed, anyone else was fair game. Mishka didn’t care about anything else, but he would teach Su’li a lesson even if he were to die later.
However, the next second, he collapsed on the ground. Su’li was taken aback, much like the others.
Mishka’s father burst through the door and lunged towards him, only to yelp and run back as if his hand burned from touching Mishka.
This family... they are all working together!
Su’li knew it because it was such an obvious act.
Sure enough, as soon as Mishka was touched, he got up, but something was different about him. His pupils... were gone. All they could see was the white of his eyes.
"Heed my call, my subjects..." Mishka’s voice turned hoarse, almost as if someone else was peaking through him.
Mishka’s parents immediately went to their knees and banged their heads against the dusty ground to show their reverence. Everyone who saw them quickly joined in, truly believing the god had descended through Mishka.
Only when their heads were bowed did Mishka smiled, glaring at Su’li as if challenging him. Su’li grabbed his staff but didn’t dare to act.
If he did, Mishka could easily brand him as a heretic and get him killed, the same way Su’li had eliminated those who stood against him.
The tables had turned!
