CHAPTER 59: CHAPTER 59: WHILE OTHERS SLAY MONSTERS, I GO SHOPPING
Once realization dawned within him, Wang Zhifan didn’t bother with the three remaining zombies in the tunnel. He quickened his pace, ascended to the surface, and arrived at the edge of a spacious city road.
At this moment, the modern city was bathed in the morning sun’s glow, displaying the unique grandeur of a steel forest. However, the sight of all kinds of wandering zombies spoiled the scene, transforming a sunny city into a city of catastrophe.
"These zombies really don’t attack me."
Even though he anticipated that he was unlikely to face any attacks, Wang Zhifan remained quite cautious upon reaching the street level. First, he observed the distribution of zombies around him, then moved towards the area with relatively fewer zombies. He found that he didn’t encounter any zombie attacks along the way, even if he deliberately approached some zombies, they ignored him.
"Who would have thought that a mere rare Chapter of Obscurity pendant would have such a significant effect in this instance... In this way, can’t I just roam the city? As long as I avoid those leader-level zombies, there shouldn’t be any issues."
Originally, Wang Zhifan was mentally prepared to spend a few thrilling and nerve-racking days of slaughter in this zombie Great Catastrophe instance, but it seems he’s not destined for such a fortune now.
Just as he thought of this with slight regret, he heard gunshots behind him, from the direction of the underground parking lot exit he had previously walked out of. It seemed other players had emerged, dealing with the three zombies in the tunnel.
Upon seeing this, Wang Zhifan immediately turned and slipped into a supermarket at the street’s edge, passing by several zombies wandering at the supermarket entrance, and entered the main door.
However, he didn’t rush inside to search for supplies. Instead, he hid by the supermarket entrance, carefully observing the situation of those players in the distance outside.
Within seconds, he saw two gunslinger players emerge from the parking lot exit where he had come out earlier. These two were swift and precise in their gunplay, and as soon as they appeared, they used their respective weapons to shoot down all the wandering zombies, leaving behind corpses as they headed towards the district away from Wang Zhifan’s current position.
Following them, a black sedan quickly emerged from the underground parking lot tunnel, rushed towards another direction on the street, along the way knocking numerous zombies aside. Many other zombies were completely drawn to the car, beginning to chase after it in groups, instantly making the previously quiet city street lively.
Consequently, a few more groups of people emerged from the tunnel. With the path paved by the previous two groups, they faced much less pressure. Some chose to explore the street carefully, while others went directly into surrounding buildings on the street.
"A few people are heading my way; they might also enter this supermarket to search for supplies. I better speed up."
After roughly understanding the basic movements of the other players, Wang Zhifan no longer paid attention to the outside. He turned and walked into the inner part of the current supermarket, beginning his search in this dimly lit store where zombies loomed beside the shelves.
He first passed two large African American male zombies with swollen, dark heads, wearing security uniforms, then bypassed a slender young Caucasian female zombie in a dress, bent and hunched. He made his way past the automatic anti-theft gate that only allowed single-person entrance into the shelf area displaying various goods.
Thanks to the morning sun outside the supermarket, Wang Zhifan, who had good eyesight, could barely discern things in this spot. He proceeded past zombies wandering within the shelf area, beginning to select items he needed from shelf after shelf.
The first shelf displayed some tobacco and alcohol items. Wang Zhifan casually picked up one bottle of liquor, finding many characters on its packaging that resembled foreign language letters, which he couldn’t understand. He opened the package, twisted off the cap, and brought the bottle’s mouth close to his nose for a sniff.
"It seems to be a fruit wine, probably not expired."
He quickly identified the type and condition of the bottle of wine, then re-secured its cap, and tried placing this bottle into his personal storage space.
Typically, items in instances can’t be stored in a player’s personal space unless they’re rewarded items. But considering players need to survive for three days and nights in this instance, perhaps there were relaxed restrictions for convenience’s sake.
True enough, his attempt succeeded, as the bottle of fruit wine disappeared from his hand, transferred into his personal storage space.
"This is wonderful, saves me from carrying many items around."
Having made this pleasant discovery, Wang Zhifan officially entered the stage of sweeping for goods. He started scouring for needed items in the zombie-filled dim supermarket.
"Bottled purified water? Thirty bottles."
"Potato chips? Five bags."
"Canned salty fish? Looks too salty; just take three... Beef canned food? Must take them all!"
"These instant noodles look good too, take them all..."
Soon, Wang Zhifan’s personal space with a total volume of two cubes had been half-filled. He mainly packed various foods and drinks, including snacks, checking each item to ensure he hadn’t mistaken the type or that none had gone bad.
At this moment, in the dim supermarket, Wang Zhifan had reached the far end of the shelves. He casually took down two large bundles of blanket-sized luggage from the top of the shelf and threw them into his personal space. He also found a large pillow nearby, which he placed in his space as well.
As he took these bulky items off the shelf, a half-decayed face of a Caucasian male zombie appeared across the shelf, with a tall male zombie on the other side blankly staring at him with cloudy eyes.
"HELLO."
Seeing this, Wang Zhifan wasn’t frightened, instead casually greeting it, and the greeting had the expected result. The tall zombie across the shelf showed no reaction, continuing to stand there dazedly.
However, at this moment, Wang Zhifan suddenly raised his head to look up at the supermarket ceiling. On the dark ceiling, he faintly sensed something sizable swiftly flickered past the area above his head nearby.
