CHAPTER 88: CHAPTER 88: CORE LABORATORY
Walking out of the basement, a cacophony of roars exploded in his ears, waves of sound rising under the night sky, as the smooth stone brick floor reflected the moonlight.
It was pitch-black around him, with no familiar fluorescent tubes in sight.
Are they afraid of attracting the zombies?
Su Changxing was on edge. He glanced around and saw no one else. The corridor was piled with a large amount of garbage, and his feet occasionally kicked plastic trash, making a crisp sound.
Evidently, these survivors didn’t frequent the first floor, so they hadn’t bothered to clean up. Perhaps the first floor was dangerous for them too, with thousands of zombies nearby.
He vaguely remembered that the little boy once entered through the safe passage behind the entire building.
So instead of taking the stairs directly upward, he walked out from the corridor to find the safe passage and go up from there.
The layout of Shield Company was complex, trying to find it upstairs would take a lot of time, and it might not even be connected.
"He really dares to come up here, completely ignoring us."
A bald man with a shadowy face crouched in the dark, watching Su Changxing with suppressed anger.
This young man with a pistol gave him immense pressure, high-frequency shooting, unavoidable bullets, almost zero mistakes.
"Old fourth Wang’s ability should’ve effectively defended against bullets, but unfortunately, he was the first to die downstairs."
The wrinkled-faced man beside him popped a white pill into his mouth, chewing as his whole spirit lifted: "Just hide, what’s the point in killing him? Isn’t living better?"
The bald man’s eyes gleamed: "He has a pistol, a pistol that can shoot. With that gun, we might turn the tables."
The wrinkled man moved his face slightly, sighed, and said, "But how do we kill him? Can’t figure it out..."
He paused and suddenly said, "So why is he here? It’s definitely not just to kill people."
"This must all be part of a precise plan." The bald man immediately understood his companion’s meaning and analyzed, "He sneaked in while the Lady of the House and other power users were out, to steal something from her or to uncover secrets."
The wrinkled man thought for a moment and said, "Jackal is desperate to know the secret of the apocalypse; more of their people are going mad lately. Thinking about it, we’re still quite fortunate. However, we might have a traitor; otherwise, he couldn’t have timed it so precisely, acting as soon as the hunting party left."
The bald man shook his head thoughtfully: "That’s impossible. With the Lady of the House around, no traitor could exist; you know anyone betraying us would die."
He paused and said, "If he goes into that place, we can ambush him outside and finish him off."
The wrinkled man hesitated and said, "I’m more curious about what’s in there; too bad we can’t get in."
The bald man chuckled, "So we have more reason to act; if he brings something out, we’ll take him down and it’ll be ours."

Footsteps echoed in the empty corridor, as if someone were following him.
Su Changxing’s face slightly tensed, sensing eyes watching him from the shadows, but unable to pinpoint their location.
This spot was shaped like a hollow square, with numerous suspended passageways crisscrossing the air on each level.
Further up was a small glass ceiling, with glimpses of stars faintly visible.
The environment was complicated; the survivors could hide anywhere, and Su Changxing knew if they recklessly attacked like zombies, he might not stand a chance.
Su Changxing decided that once he got the critical clue, he would leave, or if he couldn’t find the clue within four hours, he’d leave too.
After four hours, the survivors who went hunting would likely return, and most of these hunters were extraordinary with possibly some strange abilities; getting blocked would be dangerous.
Along the corridor, Su Changxing made his way to the back of the building, where through thick glass curtain walls, he saw densely packed zombies outside the large iron gate of Shield Company, shining in the moonlight.
Restless though they were, they showed no intention of crossing the large iron gate, standing quietly outside the fence of Shield Company.
If they wanted to, such a height of the fence wouldn’t stop them at all.
Is it because of the Giant Infant in the sewers?
Or something else?
Exerting great effort, Su Changxing opened the rusted, heavy wooden door at the pivot, stepping outside, as the clear howl sounded from the left.
Two dark shadows lunged at him, seemingly two zombies.
Su Changxing raised the steel saber with one hand, muscles in his arm swelling as he swept across with great force, slicing the heads of both zombies cleanly, and they fell to the ground.
"Some zombies have still managed to climb in."
Su Changxing surveyed the area, finding no other zombies, and quickly walked along the building’s edge.
He sensed danger here, knowing any sudden noise could attract the zombies outside, and using a gun here might even trigger a massive undead tide.
After circling the building’s edge, Su Changxing found the somewhat familiar safe passage, with a metal door at the entrance missing one half.
Without hesitation, Su Changxing sidestepped through, not bothering to think about what caused it. Things had reached this point, and he could only charge forward.
The staircase was clean, neither litter nor corpses, evidently cleaned.
He climbed to the fifth floor in one go, stopping in the corridor, spotting the familiar windowsill, where the little boy’s father once smoked.
This was the most deeply imprinted memory of the little boy, and so Su Changxing remembered it clearly.
Composing himself, Su Changxing walked along the corridor, rounding two corners, and saw the alloy door with the shield logo.
"Ka-ka-ka~"
The door was ajar but heavy, and opening it caused a huge metallic scraping sound.
"He knows this place well, went straight through the back door."
The survivors ambushing at the front door were stunned; they never expected Su Changxing to use the back door of that place.
The bald man pondered, "Could he be an employee of Shield Company too?"
Shield Company didn’t welcome outsiders; ordinary people had no chance to get in.
For him to directly find the back door to the core laboratory, it indicated he was likely an employee of Shield Company before, probably a Level 5 or higher employee.
Only employees Level 5 and above could work in the core laboratory.
A bespectacled survivor frowned and said, "Back then, it seemed only the Lady of the House came out alive from the core laboratory..."
Most of these survivors were actually just the lowest-level employees of Shield Company and had only a superficial understanding of many things.
