Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship
Chapter 171 - Determined to Lose Weight
"Getting fat really is inconvenient!"
Yang Yi squeezed his way out of the cabin and into the captain's quarters, only to find that the bed was a bit too small, and any slight movement would send him rolling off onto the floor. He was worried the bed might collapse under him...
After thinking for a few seconds, Yang Yi decided to sleep on the floor. He took off his captain’s uniform, grabbed a pillow for cushioning, and lay down.
"Suna, keep an eye on the area around the ship. If there’s any danger, wake me up."
He sent Suna a message, then drank a bottle of sleep-inducing magic potion and drifted off.
Meanwhile, in the witch's laboratory, Suna was busy analysing the books they had found on the ship. To her, they were the real treasure from this expedition, as within them could be hidden secrets of this world.
Unfortunately, that world map was torn apart by Yang Yi! Just thinking about it now still made Suna angry!
She had hidden the books deep inside her armour, but since they had dived into the sea earlier, they got soaked all over again. Given the outdated printing methods used for the books, and the fact that the letters were written in ink, fully restoring the contents was practically impossible. Suna could only try to salvage as much information as possible.
The books included: "The Thirteenth Whaling Fleet Logbook", "The Appointment for the Hunt of a Small Rotwhale Nicknamed 'Jellyfish'", "Riko's Letter", and "The Dangers of Rotwhales".
She was carefully drying them. If they were too wet, the pages would be too stuck together and prone to tearing. Too dry, and they would become brittle. Suna had to experiment, as she had never studied archaeology.
Luckily, she had nimble hands, cutting through one page wouldn’t go as deep as the next. After that, she would gently try to separate the sheets with tweezers. It was a repetitive and tedious process, but the thought of uncovering the knowledge within gave her near-endless motivation.
Twenty-two hours later, Yang Yi woke up feeling refreshed. The sleeping potion had helped him skip the negative side effects of his magic energy depletion. His mind was clear, and he had rested well. His weight was still 240 kg.
After that, he began checking the grand sea chart to determine the location of the Bountiful Sea Region. It looked like it would still take two to three more days for the sea to expand to this area. While he had been asleep, the Nightmare Star had remained stationary, not moving an inch.
He got up with difficulty, turned sideways to exit the room, and stepped outside the captain's quarters. The sun was bright, it was probably around noon, still a long while before sunset. The surface of the sea around them had started showing layered patterns. A film about a finger thick floated on top, an oily substance that was actually the white sugar water characteristic of the Bountiful Sea.
Fish were flipping and tumbling at the surface, gulping down the sugary water, a sight quite similar to what he had seen before. They would create drag while sailing, but weren't too dangerous, as long as he didn’t run into whales or other large marine creatures.
Yang Yi looked for a while before withdrawing his gaze and turning to the crystal ball in his hand. The island was gone. After all, it had been a rotwhale, and it was completely dead.
“Don’t tell me the island in the Bountiful Sea is also a rotwhale...” Yang Yi wondered to himself. If that were the case, then the watchtower would serve as an early warning system.
Yang Yi didn’t linger on the deck for long. He opened the chat channel, intending to send a private message to Suna, only to find she had already left him one. It contained information about the books they had brought up earlier. That maniac hadn’t slept until just an hour ago. She had sliced up each page of the letters and tried to decode them.
Yang Yi glanced through the window of Suna’s room to confirm she was lying in bed, then made his way towards the witch’s laboratory. The place had completely changed, papers scattered everywhere, most of them with illegible writing, completely ruined by seawater.
Suna had picked out only the ones that still held usable or barely readable information. What an immense workload — out of over 500 pages, only a few were of actual value.
First of all, the whaling fleet came from a nation called Dabar. It was the first time Yang Yi had heard the name of a nation, excluding the long-extinct "Salt Kingdom”. The country was likely located near the Bountiful Sea, which would explain why they organised fleets to hunt rotwhales that escaped from the sea region. Just one could collapse the ecosystem of a massive swath of ocean, so it had to be killed.
By size, rotwhales were classified into: micro, small, medium, large, and giant. However, the specific measurements for each category were missing from the documents.
The Salt Wedge was only capable of killing medium-sized rotwhales or smaller. Once they exceeded that size, it became ineffective. The reason wasn’t stated explicitly, but based on the intel Yang Yi had, it was likely because it simply lacked the power. It was a replica, after all.
As for the letter from Riko, it was likely the captain’s daughter. The handwriting had blurred, but the date remained legible: Year 4421 of the Radiant Era, July 7th
“This world’s history spans that long?” Yang Yi was a little shocked. That amount of time should have been enough for civilisation to reach modern levels. However, judging from the poor quality of the books and envelopes, the development of the civilisation was seriously lagging.
Yang Yi took out the small, finely crafted lock made of ocean-silver. The number carved on the bottom turned out to be… It was actually a date, not some kind of serial number like he had thought.
However, it had to carry some special significance. The lock was probably sent along with the envelope as well. Yang Yi put the lock away and looked at the most unusual piece of paper among the pile.
The printed characters hadn’t yet faded despite being soaked in seawater. The paper itself was clearly far more durable. It had been hidden inside the navigation log, and Suna had managed to find it.
“There is a traitor among your fleet. You must find and kill them. If you are not their match, you may attempt to stab the Salt Wedge into your own chest.
- The Covenant of Silence.”
Yang Yi memorised the name, realising it must be a powerful organization. Aside from that, there was no other valuable information.
He then summoned the skeletal arms to clean up the witch’s lab a bit and afterwards returned to the deck to begin his workout, and hopefully lose some (a lot of) weight.
He lifted the Twilight Veil, allowing the Nightmare Star to descend, and began his fitness routine.
He was still in a weakened state, all attributes -2, and his stamina drained as fast as water from a bucket with holes. After barely five squats, Yang Yi was already gasping for air. His stamina had plummeted to just above 40.
Each time he stood up, it felt like weightlifting, he was carrying hundreds of pounds of fat, after all!
“Now I finally understand why fat people fail at losing weight...”
Yang Yi collapsed on the ground, took out a bottle of Vitality Coconut Juice and chugged it to recover his energy.
He had made up his mind not to eat anything until he lost 50kg, surviving only on water and coconut juice for stamina.
If he didn’t die of starvation, he would starve the fat off him. I mean, with that much fat on him, could he really starve to death?
