Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship
Chapter 177 - Light rain
Nighttime.
Yang Yi and Suna were having dinner.
The former was on a diet, so he only ate a single can of bread to get by. The latter, however, dined in a much more refined manner.
She used the shell of a vitality coconut as a bowl, filled it with diced dried monkey meat and torn white breadcrumbs, then placed it all in an iron pot, covered it, and steamed it.
The aroma was visible to the naked eye.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t smell it with their masks on.
“You can cook?” Yang Yi asked in astonishment, as if he had discovered a new continent.
“Not exactly, but definitely better than you!” Suna replied casually, picking up a piece of the steamed bread with wooden chopsticks and eating it with the meat.
Eating in the Bountiful Sea was not convenient. After all, wearing a mask meant you had to lift it to eat.
But compared to the other difficulties, this bit of inconvenience was almost negligible.
Yang Yi watched Suna take two bites, swallowed a mouthful of saliva, and quickly looked away. His willpower was as strong as steel. If he said he was dieting, he would absolutely not let himself eat more.
When he had time, he could cook something himself, so there was no need to stare at Suna’s food.
Yang Yi turned his gaze to the sea to distract himself.
There were no large waves, but he could see schools of fish churning the water as they scrambled for food, creating constant splashing sounds.
Suddenly, a few drops of water landed on Yang Yi’s cheek, it seemed to be drizzling.
He looked up and saw fine droplets falling from the sky. One of them happened to fall directly into his right eye.
Yang Yi blinked involuntarily and wiped it, immediately noticing something odd.
Why was this rain so sticky?
He touched his cheek and confirmed the feeling. Then, realising something, he quickly took out his crystal greatshield and held it up like an umbrella to block the drizzle from above.
“Suna, something’s wrong with this rain!” Yang Yi said succinctly, interrupting Suna’s eating.
She quickly noticed the anomaly as well.
Fortunately, the rain wasn't heavy, and the two quickly took shelter in the captain’s cabin.
The rain fell like a springtime mist, drifting down like water vapor.
At first, it was hardly noticeable. Only after getting wet and feeling uncomfortable did one realise something was off.
They removed their outerwear and used fresh water to wash it off.
It seemed to be highly concentrated sugar water.
Once the moisture evaporated from the skin’s surface, the sugar coated it like solidified wax.
If one sniffed or even tasted it, they would find it delicious, a sweet syrup.
“Did it get in your eye too?” Suna noticed Yang Yi continuously rinsing his right eye with fresh water.
“A drop got in by accident, almost glued my eyelid shut,” Yang Yi replied.
After rinsing thoroughly with fresh water, the foreign sensation in his right eye finally disappeared.
“No infection?” Suna asked.
“Nope.”
Yang Yi checked his status panel and confirmed he hadn’t contracted a negative status like “Craving for Deliciousness”.
The rain was still falling.
It was incredibly high in sugar content. When it landed on the deck or hull, it turned into thick syrup, which then solidified into a sugary crust on the ship under the sea breeze.
Yang Yi stood by the window, observing for a while.
Suna, meanwhile, used her witch’s dagger to scrape some of the white sugar frost from the surface of the crystal greatshield.
It was the residue of earlier solidified rain, just a tiny amount, appearing as small white sugar specks, like the frosting on rice crackers, only finer.
“Delicious honey. This rainwater has the same composition as the water in the Bountiful Sea, just more concentrated!” Suna said.
Yang Yi nodded and walked back.
There were no major anomalies at sea, he had confirmed it with his third eye.
Rainwater falling into the sea would dilute, causing the white seawater to thicken, but that was about it.
He began checking the weather.
Today's Weather:
Light drizzle, slightly sweet rain
Location: Sea of OriginRemaining daylight: Sunrise in eight hoursTemperature: 20–23°CWind force: Level 3
Next came the ocean map.
The expansion speed of the Bountiful Sea showed no significant change.
Then the chat channel opened.
Players began commenting one after another, noting that rain had begun to fall.
"Is it raining where you are? This rain is so sticky!"
"Not here.""It just started here too! Once it dries, it peels off like a layer of skin!""Damn, it got in my eye, if it weren’t for all the tears, my eyelids would be glued shut.""This stuff seems like sugar water. Smells nice, but better not let it into your mouth.""So sweet!""........."
After scanning the chat, Yang Yi could confirm that the rain was gradually spreading across the entire Safe Sea Zone.
About ten minutes later, a system announcement popped up in the chat:
【System Announcement: Due to environmental changes within the Bountiful Sea, a tsunami is imminent. All players, please prepare accordingly. The boundary of the Bountiful Sea may expand rapidly due to the tsunami.】
The chat exploded instantly.
"Shit, a tsunami! I knew the system was plotting something nasty!"
"This damn system and its sneak attacks, never changes, just like a dog that can't stop eating poop!"
Yang Yi closed the chat channel and checked the boundary of the Bountiful Sea again.
Although there hadn't been rapid changes yet, once the tsunami hit, the Safe Sea Zone could quickly be swallowed by the white sea water.
So, it was necessary to secure all supplies in the cabin while there was still time and prepare for the possibility of the ship being submerged, because the size of the tsunami was unknown.
In the worst-case scenario, the Nightmare Star would be shattered and dragged to the ocean floor.
After some thought, Yang Yi decided to take action and do whatever he could.
First, he cleared all leftover items from the deck and stored them inside the ship to prevent losses during the tsunami.
This included clothes, armour, weapons, and various essential items from the captain’s cabin and Suna’s room, everything important should be carried on them if possible.
As for pillows and blankets, those could be easily crafted again from cloth, so losing them wouldn’t matter.
Next, he secured the supplies inside the cabin to prevent damage or loss.
Fortunately, the two had previously preserved all food as canned rations. As long as they were packed into suitable wooden barrels and nailed shut, there was no risk of the food being contaminated by the white seawater.
"We also need to reinforce the cabin, ideally seal the windows, cannon ports, and doors with planks or even steel plates. That way, as long as the hull isn’t damaged and water intake is minimal, even if the ship sinks, it will resurface quickly," Suna suggested.
Yang Yi nodded in agreement.
The two got to work immediately, first retrieving all essential belongings from their rooms, then each took a crystal greatshield and left their quarters.
The shields were lightweight, sturdy, and massive, perfect for use as umbrellas. However, Yang Yi encountered a problem while opening the door.
The rainwater had made it sticky, it was glued shut. He pushed several times, but it wouldn’t budge.
Utterly annoying!
Yang Yi’s eyes narrowed, he transformed into his wolf form and kicked the door off its hinges, then split up with Suna.
She went to the ship’s hold; Yang Yi was in charge of collecting the leftover items and supplies from the deck.
The captain’s cabin door was quickly repaired and closed by the skeletal arms. As long as the captain’s cabin remained intact and didn’t flood, it could provide considerable buoyancy.
