Jiang Ran received a call from his ex-girlfriend that day.
To call her his ex-girlfriend wasn't entirely accurate—she was actually the original host's ex-girlfriend. The original host had worked multiple jobs and pushed himself to death precisely because this ex-girlfriend had dumped him.
Searching through his memories, Jiang Ran realized the original host and his ex hadn't contacted each other since their breakup. So why was she calling now?
"Don't tell me it's some cliché scenario where she's inviting her ex-boyfriend to her wedding?"
After answering the call, Jiang Ran understood the reason. His ex was crying about her new boyfriend dumping her and wanted comfort from her former flame.
Jiang Ran knew there was a high chance he could "score" if he went to see her. But recalling the original host's memories, he realized this ex-girlfriend wasn't someone easy to deal with—despite being quite attractive.
In the end, Jiang Ran decided against meeting her. Getting entangled with this "monster" would be disastrous.
That same day, Jiang Ran received a second call—this time from some of the original host's college friends inviting him to dinner the next day. Since he was free, Jiang Ran thought it would be nice to get a free meal and agreed.
The next day at noon, in a private room at a restaurant:
Three men and two women. One of the men was Jiang Ran. Another was quite overweight, around 200 pounds at 5'7", always wearing a cheerful smile. The last was of average build but very short—only 5'3", though he appeared taller now thanks to hidden shoe lifts and terrifyingly high heels.
As for the two women: the first had ordinary looks but decent height at 5'3". The second was beautiful with a mature, elegant appearance and matching height at 5'7".
All five had attended the same university, same year, and same club. They'd met through the club and maintained a strong friendship since college until now.
The dinner had been initiated by the 200-pound guy. His reason was simple: after struggling to find a girlfriend due to his weight, he'd finally met a girl through a family-arranged blind date. Their relationship was going well, and they'd gotten engaged. So this meal was both a celebration and a reunion with long-unseen friends.
"Damn, fatty! You're actually engaged! And you didn't even invite us to the engagement!" The short guy grabbed a bottle of baijiu and poured several shots down the big guy's throat as punishment.
"Come on, it was just the engagement! Only relatives were there. Of course I'll invite you to the wedding—you'll need to give red envelopes after all!" The big guy laughed heartily, raising his glass and downing it in one go.
After drinking, he scanned the others. "Don't just talk about me—how about your love lives?"
The short guy suddenly wrapped an arm around the ordinary-looking girl beside him, grinning broadly. "We're doing great too—almost engaged!"
The girl blushed furiously.
"What the hell? When did you two get together?" the big guy exclaimed in surprise.
"Secret! But since we're almost engaged anyway, might as well tell you all now!" the short guy declared.
"Congratulations!" the big guy said, then turned his gaze to the tall, beautiful mature-looking woman.
Her name was Wang Qingzhao—named by her parents after the famous Song Dynasty poet Li Qingzhao.
"Qingzhao, how's it going with your boyfriend?"
Wang Qingzhao smiled faintly, unconcerned. "We broke up a while ago."
"Broke up? Why? Everything seemed fine!"
Wang Qingzhao shrugged. "Might as well tell you—I'm quite conservative and refused premarital sex. He couldn't handle that, so we split."
Everyone had an "aha" moment before simultaneously turning to Jiang Ran.
The big guy smirked mischievously. "Jiang Ran, how's it going with Shen Xing? I clearly remember you two were the first couple in our group—stuck together like glue back in college."
Shen Xing was the ex-girlfriend who had called earlier.
Jiang Ran replied calmly, "We broke up long ago."
"Broke up?" Everyone looked shocked, especially Wang Qingzhao sitting to Jiang Ran's left.
"How? You two were so close! I was already preparing to attend your wedding after graduation!" the big guy exclaimed.
Jiang Ran remained composed. "Forget the wedding wine. Shen Xing thought I was too poor, so she found someone richer."
This surprised the big guy—the Shen Xing they knew in college hadn't seemed materialistic at all. Jiang Ran simply said people change; just because someone didn't care about money before didn't mean they never would.
Suddenly, the big guy suggested, "Hey, Jiang Ran, Wang Qingzhao—since you're both single now, why not get together?"
The big guy had activated his "matchmaker" skill.
The two protagonists were stunned, instinctively making eye contact before immediately looking away in mutual embarrassment.
The big guy downed another full glass of baijiu in one gulp, then continued, "Come on, no need to hide it anymore. Back then, everyone knew both you, Wang Qingzhao, and Shen Xing liked Jiang Ran. He just happened to choose Shen Xing. Now that she's gone, wouldn't you two make a great pair?"
Just as he finished speaking, the private room door suddenly swung open.
Everyone assumed it was the waiter, but instead, familiar faces appeared.
"Looks like we're not too late after all!" a clear female voice rang out.
Jiang Ran's ex-girlfriend Shen Xing had arrived—with her boyfriend Zhou Wu in tow.
Stunned by his ex's sudden appearance, Jiang Ran shot a questioning look at the big guy, who awkwardly laughed, "Haha, well... Shen Xing was part of our little group too! But... didn't you say you weren't coming earlier? What changed?"
Indeed, this university club group originally had six members—Shen Xing was the sixth.
Shen Xing had a very feminine charm. Now she sat down beside her boyfriend Zhou Wu.
Answering the big guy, she said, "How could I miss a gathering with old classmates?" Then her gaze shifted to Jiang Ran across the table.
Jiang Ran stared at Shen Xing, then at Zhou Wu beside her, thoroughly confused. Weren't they supposed to have broken up? How were they back together?
