Chapter 106 – Holy Greed
Lux finally shifted his gaze to the glowing menu. It reacted with a soft shimmer, adjusting brightness and size like it was trying to be helpful without showing off.
He scanned the options.
Every single dish was pristine. Balanced. Stabilized. Healthy with a capital H. Nothing deep-fried, nothing spicy, nothing comfortingly greasy.
It was like looking at a meal plan created by a spiritually enlightened fitness coach.
- Steamed Herbed Quinoa with Sun-Touched Vegetables
- Crisped Celery-Root Cakes with Air-Spun Yogurt Dip
- Pan-Seared Skyfish on Angel Hair Greens
- Warm Lentil and Lumina Bean Bowl
- Sweet Ambercorn and Wild Rice Medley
- Soul-Broth Mushroom Soup
- Air-Roasted Cauliflower & Chickpea Wrap
The drinks? No alcohol. No wine. No coffee. Just tea. So much tea.
Eastern blends. Purifying infusions. Soul-cleansing herbal decoctions with names like Moonlight Clarity and Heart Stillness No. 7.
And, of course, milk. Cold, warm, sweetened, unsweetened, oat, almond, celestial dairy, you name it.
Lux tilted his head.
"Thinking again... I’ve never eaten Upper Realm food," he murmured to himself.
He made his choice.
Selena, across the table, tapped her selection quietly.
Lux reached over and tapped the small silver bell resting on the side of the table. It rang without sound, but a subtle chime echoed in their minds like a polite whisper in a library.
The server returned with the same light grace as before.
"I’ll have the lotus-braised pearl tofu," Lux said, tone relaxed. "And... just water. No flowers, no flavor enhancers. Just plain."
Selena nodded toward the server. "I’ll have the same entrée. But I’ll take the harmony tea, warm."
"Right away," the server said, bowing slightly before drifting off again like she didn’t weigh anything.
A pause.
Selena smiled. "This lunch will be on me."
Lux raised an eyebrow. "You trying to treat a Greed demon?"
"Yes," she said without missing a beat. "There’s no violence from that, right?"
He chuckled under his breath, leaning back. "Brave move."
"Besides," she said, tucking a strand of silver hair behind her ear, "you said it yourself. It’s your first time here off-duty."
"True," Lux said, the smile lingering. "Then... thank you."
The silence that followed was gentler. Unforced. It wrapped around them, not like discomfort, but like a warm towel after a cold rain.
Selena couldn’t stop watching him. Not staring—just... observing.
Lux’s eyes were out the window again, lazily following the soft flow of foot traffic outside. Celestials glided past, chatting, humming, some just walking silently under the late-morning light. All of it serene. Soft. Golden.
But her mind was entirely on him.
She had seen Lux as the CFO of Hell. Professional. Brilliant. Cold when needed. That was the version everyone expected—the one who walked into meetings and made warlords sweat without raising his voice. That Lux was powerful.
She had also seen Lux in the mortal realm. That was the playful one. The one who messed around, seduced with ease, pulled off absurd situations and walked away grinning. She had seen him with mortals. Seen him in bedroom.
But this Lux?
This angel-wrapped version?
She’d never seen this one before.
And he looked...
Fine.
More than fine.
He looked good.
Like he fit. Like he belonged here.
Maybe that shouldn’t surprise her. Maybe it should terrify her.
It did both.
Then he suddenly spoke, breaking the quiet without warning.
"Is it weird," Lux said, still looking out the window, "if I say this place is nice?"
She blinked. "Nice?"
"Not just as a compliment," he clarified, turning to her now. "I mean it."
She tilted her head. "You... found it nice?"
"It’s peaceful," Lux said, his voice a little lower. "That’s rare. The kind of peace that doesn’t feel like it’s one policy decision away from collapsing."
He paused, eyes flicking toward a pair of winged kids feeding translucent koi in a hovering bowl.
"But," he added, "it’s not a place I can stay too long."
Her breath caught slightly.
"I’m not... designed for this place," he said, and she could hear the weight in his tone now. "My nature will come out. Sooner or later. Doesn’t matter what robe I wear."
He looked down at his own hands for a moment, like he wasn’t sure what to do with them.
"But still..." he said, looking up again, "this is nice. Once in a while. I think... walking around here isn’t a bad idea."
Selena’s fingers twitched beneath the table.
Just for a moment, she wanted to reach out. To touch his hand. To say something like ’you could stay longer. Or you can come whenever you want’. To tell him ’this city should have more people like you.’
But she didn’t.
Because that was impossible.
It wasn’t her decision. It wasn’t his, either. He was a guest. And no matter how well he played the part—he wasn’t from here. He didn’t belong to the Light.
He was a demon.
And Lux Vaelthorn... was the first demon to ever be allowed to walk freely in Aurealis.
She lowered her gaze.
Her fingers curled inward.
And yet... she couldn’t ignore it. The way he behaved here. Respectful. Curious. Calm. Not trying to seduce. Not trying to dominate. Just... existing, with all the walls down.
And she knew—knew—how he operated.
When Lux seduced demons? He went full power. Dark confidence, sensual games, psychic pressure, fire and wine and whispered sins that made devils blush.
When Lux seduced mortals? He was simply himself. Playful. Magnetic. No illusions needed. His raw charm did the rest.
But when it came to angels?
Lux never crossed lines.
No touching.
No invasive flirting.
No pressure.
He didn’t try to break them down.
He knew the boundaries.
Knew what they thought of his kind.
Filthy creatures. Corrupted beings.
So, he used attention. Thoughtfulness. Quiet conversation. Subtle gifts. Soft praise. Small gestures that didn’t ask for anything in return.
It was rare.
It was... respectful.
And in a realm where angels were taught to be wary of sin-born creatures, that difference? That care?
It meant more than anyone ever told him.
Maybe even more than he realized himself.
